Uh, yeah, there's nothing "still" about "Moon Stick" being "Moon Wand". It was never "Moon Wand" and always "Moon Stick" in the Kodansha USA version.

"In a pinch" is an English expression though... There's no need to change it. Weird translation choices are weird
It does sound a bit outdated, or funny. I can't remember the last time I heard somebody say "in a pinch". I know for the releases I've done with Discotek, we'd typically change it to "in peril" or "in danger".

But "Moon Stick" regardless, just sounds funny. Blame Lil' Kim if you must. :P

Why exactly are they using honorifics while liberally localizing terms that have been cemented in English-speaking communities for 20+ years? "Moon Wand" sounds like they're just trying to be different for the sake of being different.

What do you mean by "still"? Was it translated that way in the bilingual release? Did Viz translate it that way and I just don't remember? In any case, I'm happy about the change since "Moon Stick" sounds ridiculous. Wish they'd stuck a "Crescent" to the beginning ;) but I'll take what I can get.

Yes, I'm referring to the bilingual release since that edition was apparently an early draft of this translation. Sorry, I didn't make that clear and shouldn't have assumed. Viz never translated the manga. Supposedly, the eternal edition will still have many differences, which is why I made note of this being the same.

That's odd, since, as I pointed out earlier, the bilingual release was attributed to William Flanagan, but the eternal edition was translated by a duo of women. This seems to indicate the bilingual release was incorrectly credited to Flanagan and that's kind of a huge blunder, but at this point I can't say such blunders are much of a surprise...

So "Moon Stick" was changed, because it sounds weird to English-speakers, yet they kept the honorifics? Where's the logic in that?

The Moon Stick isn't even a wand. It's just a handle with a crescent-shaped fixture attached to its top end. It's no more shaped like a wand than a flashlight or a frying pan are.

Not to mention, in the context of the story, it's used like a wand.

"Moon Stick" just makes me want to laugh everytime I read it. Something that I doubt was Naoko Takeuchi's intent.

So "Moon Stick" was changed, because it sounds weird to English-speakers, yet they kept the honorifics? Where's the logic in that?
It's possible keeping the Japanese honorifics was a request by the Kodansha Japan or Naoko herself.

I mean, despite the name being silly, someone else pointed out that “Moon Stick” has been a staple in the English-speaking fandom for a long time now. To be fair so has “Crescent Moon Wand” but to me, this seems like a case of over-localization. Are they going to change the names of other bizarre-sounding items to make it sound better too?

It's neither long nor narrow. It's a short, thick, stubby handle piece with a crescent adorning one end.

It was long and narrow during the battle against Queen Metalia...
Yeah, at that point it made more sense, though it was wielded in that instance more like a staff or a spear given its incredibly large size in that fight, as wands aren't that big.

I legit spit out my drink at work. I can't believe somebody is denying the Moon Stick is a wand. Oh boy.

That being said, if "Moon Wand" is the worst problem about this release, I'm pretty happy.
I would also be happy is that's the worst problem, but I'm kind of preparing for what else might be next.

Will the Cutie Moon Rod also be deemed too weird-sounding for English readers and changed to the Cute Moon Staff? What about the Eternal Tiare (whatever that's even supposed to be) or the Holy Grail?

If the eternal edition is going to use all the same terms from the bilingual edition then:

Moon Stick = Moon Wand
Legendary Silver Crystal = Mystical Silver Crystal
Four Kings of Heaven = Four Heavenly Kings
Royal Chocolate = Princess Cake
Hikawa Shrine = Hikawa Jinja
Miko = Shinto Priestess
Evil Spirit, Be Exorcised! = Evil Spirit, Begone!
