Alice Poon was great. She did some side voices too, like one of the Doom and Gloom girls.

In Roland Parliament's book he mentions he said something racist to an "Asian performer" while working on the show, and somebody here assumed it was her. Nothing has been confirmed, but it would explain her departure.

Mary Long's voice works better with older characters, IMO although I don't mind her as Molly. I think her best voice work was Rini's teacher Ms. Morino and some of the Daimon (Toden especially).

Why are people blaming Toei for the video quality? So many countries have released the remastered version of Sailor Moon and none of them had any of these problems. Why would Toei give decent masters to Italy, France, Australia etc. but give VIZ crappy materials? Why did VIZ deliberately posted faked bad quality images supposedly from R2 for comparison? They have been the same masters as every one else, but they had no idea how to upscale, crop and color correct properly and went cheap on it not hiring someone who does. The dub itself though is not bad and this is the only aspect I can't understand the hate.
I am not a "videophile," as most people here, but I wonder why Madman's release is allegedly better than VIZ's.

All you have to do is compare screen shots and you will see. It's night and day. iz tried to make ''improvemen' by boosting the saturation, remoe moie grain, which resulted in washed out mess. And if we take into account the ghousting, interlace and the horrible compression...

I know absolutely nothing, but I suspect (no facts to prove that this is true) that VIZ may have altered the picture quality to release a Blu-ray version of the show. I suspect (again no facts to prove that this is true) that VIZ had to release a Blu-ray version of "Sailor Moon" to recover the investment. I imagine that licensing and dubbing "Sailor Moon" was very expensive and that VIZ had to have a return of investment.

Madman got the best deal because they released their own version AND used VIZ's dub.

Ok, but they did it horrendously. I have made better upscaling at home with finalcut years ago. iz went as far as posting crappy altered shots presenting them as the quality that's on the Japanese DVD, just to make it look passable, which is blunt lying. And the DVD version instead of being normal as they had masters for that to be done normally, was the downsized version of the butchered blu ray "remastering". Madman could have had a better deal to just import Viz dvd/blu ray version, but they refused. Yes, VIZ needed a blu ray, but this is the worst upscaling I have seen, with errors that an amateur wouldn't do. Toei/ Madman blu ray version is not the best as it is upscale made with the same masters, but it is 10 times better.

Assuming that VIZ allegedly altered the picture quality (we have no proof of that), how can we guarantee ourselves that other company, such as Funimation, would have handled it better?

I own the Japanese DVD sets, they exist and it can easily be proven the quality they showed is not what's on them. Well, Funimation has handled upscaling much better in the past, half the world produced dvd or the same quality as the Jaoanese, while Italy even achieved better quality with the exact same sets. Viz shouted prior release how much effort they put and how much better their quality is, they showed altered materials for comparisons and these are serious faux pas.

So would you say that Funimation would have handled it better than VIZ? Out of curiosity.
I like the dub, unlikre many. I believe Funination would have done worse dubwise. And Viz handled Crystal wonderfully. But when it comesto video quality for the original anime, based on Funimation upscales I think they could have done better job.I have done better test jobs. A lot of fans with encoding skills have done much better looking encoding. Viz made a huge muddy mess out of the video. The point is they shouldn't have tried further remastering and blu ray in their own at all. No other country did. The only thing Viz won with it are negatives, downgrading the quality immensly. Madman are releasing the Jaoanese blu ray version, and still use the Italian filtering of the original dvd masters masters for their dvds as it is undeniable the best quality available despite being sd

If we're talking about the dub, nope. We would be having the same conversations as right now, especially over the writing because some (not all) of FUNi's regular writers are terrible at their job and have been called out for it plenty of times, especially in more recent years.

Which upscales are you talking about? FUNi released a lot of bad ones when they were doing it themselves.

Not for SuperS & Stars they aren't, the DVDs are using the Japanese upscale and people are not happy with Madman over that.

That was to be the case but as the Jaoanese are releasing them slower than expected they kept the Ita masters for Supers Dvds. I don't want to argue about Funimation, but still not many companies would have done upscale attempt of such and old show to begin with. Plus the Viz upscale was so bad that I doubt someonecwould have done it worse.

I don't get the hate.

If Funimation had gotten the rights, I think people would complain about Funimation just as much as they do about VIZ.

I think VIZ did everything it could possibly do to release "Sailor Moon" in North America.

VIZ is not a mega studio or distributor like Disney.

Also, TOEI was not fair. If TOEI had been fair, it would have given VIZ better masters.

As for selling BDs, I assume that VIZ had to create a product that felt "luxurious" to make up for the money they spent licensing the series + the new dub.
It was my wish that Funimation would get it and I have to say I don't think they would have made the same mistakes as Viz. Fan projects for one would be thriving. Funimation embraces team 4 star for example and acknowledges that they have contributed to DBZs ongoing popularity in the west. They even tried to let the voice actors do cameos in the anime but Toei intervened and didn't let them. Funimation in my opinion would have blown it out of the park if they had gotten Sailor Moon. Funimation also gives acknowledgement to the original Canadian Voice actors too they let Brian Drummond play copy Vegeta in DBS.

Let's not forget the artificial ghosting they did in the first season. The quality was bad there. Also, to me...while Viz is okayish in the dub, it just doesn't draw me in like it use to.

I seem to remember another problem with the first season DVDs playing in widescreen on 4:3 TVs, don't remember exactly but it involved black bars on the edges which were unnoticeable on modern widescreen TVs but not on old-fashioned ones. It also affects VLC IIRC.

There was also that recall of I think the second season, where it got caught in a loop and would freeze BD/DVD players. I can't find a video of it, I'm sure they took it down.

That was the first set, it was the same pillarboxing issue that affected the re-released Ranma DVDs at the time (which nobody knew about until after it happened here) and while that stopped when Part 2 came out, they never did fix the Part 1 DVDs.

Not quite, the issue was with episode 80 where the video looped while both audio tracks stayed intact but it didn't freeze players.

This was a problem that was first found with the sub version on Hulu (see the first comparison video) and when contacted about it on Twitter, they immediately fixed it there and the dub was fine when that later got posted so why they didn't fix this on the discs before Part 2's release was baffling and this also came off the heels of their botched R Part 1 release which had a similar "recall" over the missing reversible artwork.

Not familiar, what happened there?
The inside artwork was supposed to have an image of Rubeus & the four sisters but early pressings of the set, from those who got it at AX15 to those who bought it in stores and online, had it with nothing there, just all-white.

Having not watched much of the Viz dub myself. I find the voices to not stand out as much as their 90's counterpart. The ones that do stand out in the Viz cast would be Moon, Jupiter, Pluto especially but with the 90's counterparts, you could tell who is who. Also the integration of modern dubbing along with a 20 year old soundtrack doesn't transfer well compared to the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball.
