Mamoru in the anime was frustrating during the breakup thing, but I feel for his relationship with Usagi, whilst it grew pretty quick (in a good way) in the manga, it was more gradual in the original anime, later we see signs of him caring for Usagi, like eating all of her charred cookies to make her happy (and cheering her up too when she felt like a failure).
I have to say he's best episode is in episode 101 an episode where they make :usagi: look bad just like that episode with Katarina in it. XD

I didn’t even know about that one, but yeah, that just proves my point even more. They think his roses are “useless” and should receive “real” power and then when he does the very thing they want, they have to say something negative about that too. (Facepalm)

He's a really a poorly written character in the 90's. He only gets to shine 1 episode per season (except in Stars :evillaugh:) though. I would think this would be the 90's version of Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber.

I do miss his signature rose moves both in PGSM and Crystal. Wished this parody of him in Bleach was their reference. :evillaugh:

So since this thread has gotten about as convoluted as the "Prince Uranus" story...

...what would you think if there were a reboot of Sailor Moon that did just that - have Prince Endymion reincarnated as a girl in the modern day, and that she would eventually be Sailor Earth? The transition wouldn't be a straight line. Female Mamoru (who notably is comfortable with the gender assigned to her, so she has always thought of herself as a girl in this life) would pose as a male Phantom Thief when burglarizing, and when she awakened fully, she would awaken as Prince Endymion, who would be actually be male sex and gender.

So when Beryl kidnaps Endymion, she mode-locks him into a male form.

However, at the conclusion of the arc, after being freed from Metaria's control, Mamoru awakens as the true Sailor Earth and takes this form for the rest of the series as a hero identity, and Usagi and girl Mamoru get together as women, putting their past behind them.

I think it would be a good way of not only making it clear that Sailor Earth is Mamoru, but also provide explanations for things like why Mamoru was so hard to awaken (because the past-life connection was actually getting in the way of awakening) as well as why Queen Beryl couldn't find him before (because she was looking for a man, not a woman).

But this idea might be problematic in ways I don't see, so if anyone wants to call me out, be my guest.

Unofficially someone made a Sailor Kamen and Sailor Earth already.

I am familiar with stefanolattanzio's work, although his Sailor Earth is separate from Sailor Kamen (whereas the latter would naturally transition to the former if Mamoru were Sailor Earth), and there are plenty of fan ideas of Sailor Earth which take inspiration from Tuxedo Mask's design.

However, most of those Mamoru genderswaps either change the whole cast around, and/or keep Mamoru female in all incarnations for consistency. With a storytelling element as powerful as reincarnation, as well as magical girl transformation, why limit the exploration of gender and identity? Of course, one could do the same for Usagi or any other character, but given that Mamoru is the character than many fans, including myself, have trouble with accepting as Sailor Earth, this would make that point crystal clear.

I do know one person that did their own Sailor Moon fanfic where Mamoru was gender swapped to be a woman and was Sailor Earth. They also had that Mamoru and Usagi were basically a yuri couple it was a neat idea.

I've heard Mamoru's not really meant to stand out in the original series though, am I correct (sorry if this sounds like a weak excuse I heard)?

He's not really meant to stand out since he's...
a. the damsel in distress
b. he's a supporting character
c. this is a magical girl show where the main characters are well girls
d. doesn't help much Ikuhara hates him too. :evillaugh:

I think its why this episode was given to Ando and I have to say this is one of Ando's best episode he's given responsibility. ^_^'

Don't expect TOEI to do something like that. May be a different animation studio who would love to make :usagi: its personal cash cow franchise open to ideas for Yuri fan service. May be the people who worked on My-Otome but keep the blatant incest themes turned off. But then again you had Saphir and Demande as well as :chibiusa: kissing his own::tuxspeedmask:.

Ikuhara actually said this about Mamoru: I'm still able to make a story where it's between a boy and a girl. But I feel irritated to see my girl getting together with some other guy. I've tried to kill off Tuxedo Mask in Sailor Moon many times. But no matter how many times I tried to kill him, he gets resurrected so I only get angrier. So I decided it would be way better if the girl just didn't have a boyfriend to begin with. Of course I'm just kidding. In reality, if I have a guy in the show, the love relationship gets to have a bigger role than the show. And that would be an interesting element, but I wouldn't want that to make that the scene-stealer of the show. Most other shoujo shows are in that direction. It's about who-and-who are getting together, or who-and-who are breaking up. I thought it would be a loss if that would be the big motif just because a girl was the main character. I think there could be more shows with other motives than that.'' See that part I put in bold? It might have been helpful to read that entire answer instead of reading the words "kill off Tuxedo Mask" and erupting into a fanboy rage."
