Still.. I’m a bit doubtful it has anything to do with the QC issues or the French dubbing issues given the timeline. France finished their last Stars dub for a few years now and has only been putting out repackaged releases. Viz had it the worst with quality control on their season 1 set.. back in 2014. I really doubt that any of this is the reason for the hold, on its own or cumulative. Toei or Naoko would have put their foot down sooner. It makes no sense to suddenly do it now after one region (France) has been some with their run for a few years and Viz is finally releasing their last set in the US.
Kazé France have suffered a shouting from the Japanese for mistakes in France.

For several years Kazé France lied to the fans of Sailor Moon saying that they would bring back the old actors, even to their customers (the boss of a famous Parisian store of figurine / DVD) was deceived by them. Kazé France repeated the same to the boss.

It was discovered by deceit, because of a video on Twitter. Kazé continued to lie saying that it was not a dubbing for Sailor Moon, that the old cast would come back.

----

Same, season 3, collector's edition, no cards ... A majority of fans have written to the Toei to yell.

-----

And it's not just the only license they slaughter.
A historical comedian was almost fired from Dragon Ball Z because Kazé France did not want him.
He himself wrote on his FB page, to report it, all fans of DBZ shouted, a petition was launched, until Japan.
Once again, Viz Media Europe (Kazé France) was wounded by Japanese rights holders.

----

You do not block a license, just for a history of studying the market.
It must be an accumulation of errors by Viz, who pushed the Toei / Mangaka blocked everything.
We do not block a license like Sailor Moon, for a whim.

Did the new actors go back and dub in scenes that were cut in the first four seasons?
You have a complete French version. At the time, Philippe Ogouz who was artistic director on Sailor Moon has doubled everything.

Simply, when Kazé France got the rights, they took a censored version broadcast on TV. Myself with my boyfriend, we told them to pay attention, that there is a full dubbing.

They answered us: we know better than you what exists.
Proof that no, they took a censored version.
There are a lot of bad reviews on their work, finally they went to the historical publisher to buy full dubbing.

They did not take over the old cast. There was only the end teasers that were not doubled.

Anyway, even the subtitle track was carnage. Because we listened in French, the subtitling did not take the French names.

Example, ending teaser never doubled for seasons 1 to 4: Usagi becomes Bunny in dubbing, in subtitles we should have had the French name for dubbing French. For episode titles, when you listen in French you must have the French name of the time, here it was the Japanese name ... In contradiction.

The work of Kazé France, we could define it as an amateur job but not pro.

I have a theory. Naoko has been uncomfortable with the international licensings once again, for years.
Then she just waited for the US (the most important overseas market) release to end in order to block Sailor Moon's rights again. I think it's too much of a coincidence for this to happen right after Viz confirms the final series boxset.
Maybe she thinks she doesn't get the money she deserves for each international release or something. We all know the woman is greedy at this point.

And what do you think will happen when she finally allows the license to be bought again. Will she and Toei block any use of the Viz dub?
Now that it's been pulled twice, I'm wondering if future licensors will end up thinking Sailor Moon just isn't worth the trouble as a result.

Does this licensing freeze affect only the 90s anime? Because with Crystal having two movies coming out next year, it doesn't really make sense to interfere with their getting an international distribution. This makes me wonder if Toei/Naoko might be trying to remove competition (i.e. the 90s anime) to drive up interest in/the value of Crystal. If Crystal is the only Sailor Moon content legally available, it might sell better than when a superior iteration is also on the market.

In any case, I do think freezing the franchise's licensing once again is only going to hurt its value in the future. Toei isn't Disney; they can keep taking Sailor Moon in and out of some conceptual vault. But if it potentially leads to the original dub getting re-released one day, or even a third dub getting made that's handled competently, then I can bide my time.

And some people throw greedy Naoko off the bus. But apparently this affects nothing but the 90s show. It doesn't seem to affect the manga. If Naoko wanted more money, she would have put a stop on the new digital release of the manga as well.
I think the whole idea is from Toei's part. They want countries to be banned from producing superior dvds, so the only thing available everywhere to be their crappy upscale.

That's not at all that. Just watch the license St Seiya, in France, the films are never released in Blu-Ray but in DVD only. And yet the master DVD is the one in high definition.
If Toei wanted to impose their high-definition version, it would do for all licenses and not just for Sailor Moon.

The blocking only affects the animated version of Sailor Moon.
The manga is not touched, I got the answer from a publisher who will edit the version "Eternal".

But the Saint Seiya films are not good example as they have actual 1080p blu rays restored from film in Japan. Sailor Moon has upsacle they might be trying to sell everyone. Australia had to trade the superior looking dvds for the upscale already.

Neither of those are going to happen.

The original dub won't get re-released because the redub was meant to erase it, and despite people fondly remembering the old dub, people haven't organized around it. That and a certain segment of fans have been determined to consider it with worst thing ever and use social media as their megaphone.. At this point, it is half-forgotten because of the new dub. The damage is irreparable. As someone mentioned years ago, the only hope for the release of an old dub would have been if Nelvana got the license, as they likely would have re-released the old dub and fit the Canadian content requirement. But they won't now because the brand has been damaged and it would be more expensive than using an existing, "modern" dub.

A competent new dub won't happen because dubbing is an incredible expense, one that only happened in the case of the US market in large part because the vocal fandom wanted it. That and there are too many people who think Viz's "improvements" are actually the original version of Sailor Moon, so they will cling to it in spite of its flaws. No company is going to invest in a third dub if both of the previous dubs were substandard because it would be too expensive and they would never recoup their money. Since all materials go back to the licensor upon the end of a license, any new holder will either just sell the Viz dub, or much more likely, there will be no new holder to get involved at all.

Netflix will get the license and redub it and call it a Netflix Original :) teehee

I was spoken to Kazé Deutschland in private (facebook), they told me that the consequences of the blockage could play on Sailor Moon Crystal.
"Could" is key word right there.

Crystal's license is different than the 90s anime, because of the pricetag difference and QA that Naoko is closely-guarding. At this point, it's not really a "block", but a halt in licensing until the situation in the USA, or any other country, is resolved, which Naoko can do under her PNP. Spain and Deutschland will just have to wait a bit longer to get Sailor Moon going in their countries.

There is a blockage, a point that's all. Toei + PNP are waiting for the rights to stop by themselves, the end of the contracts, and do not intend to renew.
From what other contacts told me, they do not intend to sell again at Viz Media. There was too much trouble with this label.

For information, Kazé Deutschland, no longer hold the rights to the anime 90 (they have expired this year), so they wanted to have the new HD material (to redo an acquisition contract - renewed the license at their home).

To date, they have only Sailor Moon Crystal who is still active.

How about Kazé in France? Both were announced at the same time in 2013 by Toei Europe so has it expired there too?

EDIT: Confirmation by Kazé Deutschland also on Twitter:

EDIT 2: Apparently their Blu-ray releases were planned since April in complete season sets and also on DVD.

The rights have been renewed for simple editions.
You should know that sometimes the site of Kazé France is not necessarily updated ...

You go to the German site, it is well updated, you have no trace of the anime 90 (only season 1 - And normally, they should have removed that, it must be an oversight.)

I'd like to know who these "sources" are, and if they are legit. Taking this news as a grain of salt, at the moment.
