What is with a lot of the cast looking much older than the ages they are stated?

I assume this is for the manga, because the anime portrays the Black Moon Clan members are all adults.

Demande is only 18? Wow does that put a really different spin on his character. Part of the reason why he comes across as intentionally creepy is that he's apparently an older man putting the moves on a teenager. If he's the same age as our current, not only was he hoping an older woman (NQS is forever 22) would be interested in him, but of course he'd be a major-league jerk as essentially a rebellious teenager. It doesn't excuse his evil, but no wonder he and the others were manipulated so easily.

Furthermore, that mean Saffir's...like 16. Heck, no wonder he thought Droids were perfect tools that wouldn't disobey them. That is something an angsty teen would say.

Black Moon Clan are a bunch of babies, literally.
Yeah, manga/Crystal Demande's action fit his age. 90s Anime Demande is more mature.

I've watched the original and crystal and something that I always found weird was how the main cast are said to be around 14 and the outers like 16 or something but they look much older than that, being around late teens or something aside from chibiusa and saturn. Like it's kinda jarring that Usagi doesn't look too different from her mom/teacher. I've seen a similar thing in other older anime like JoJo Bizzare's Adventure or Knights of the Zodaic, so I was curious, what is up with that design choice contrast to shows like precure, where characters look more like their ages
I actually didn't address the original question in my post, but I meant to, so here does nothing.

There are several factors at play that have already been mentioned, so I'll mention two more:
  1. Art imitates life. Have you seen most teenagers? While most 14 year-olds look younger than adults, height-wise they are usually about the same as adults. This is especially true of 14-year old girls, who often do have mature development.
  2. Sailor Moon is aimed at a younger audience. They generally designed teenagers to look like adults because to children, teenagers are closer to adults. When you're the age of 6, a 14 year old is more than twice as old as you are and seems like an adult.

I think Demande's obsession on Serenity was not love or lust, but his pride got hurt, he wanted to win her as a trophy to get his pride back.

But in his heart, he knew what he has done was wrong. Serenity was representing what he actually admire. That is why he couldn't get over with it. And it's also the reason he truly felt Sailor Moon was indeed a noble figure later, because it's always in his heart, he just refuse to face it.

That's why I support the ending of Crystal so much, it was a lot better than the manga. The manga just let him die like a random mook without any human side. Even Beryl and Tomoe got better treatment. Crystal's ending was spot on of his manga character.

Anime Demande is much nicer, he has strong feeling for his own ppl. Just that he took his responsibility of the leader a bit too heavily, and with Wiseman's manipulation, his hatred towards the White Moon/earth ppl caused him to lose his heart against them. In the end he realized that they are no different than them and was redeemed.

She's not too short, just grow later.
She's short in both the Super Famicom and PS1/Sega Saturn games if she is 14 or 15.

Mistress 9 is quite tall.
There's a problem with artificial magical growth hormones in the 90's series especially when you compare Black Lady and body switched :chibiusa: who somehow ended up with a size 'D' in that one episode of SuperS. XD Proof Wiseman isn't a perv unlike Ainz Oal Gowl.

Yeah but some girls grow later than the others, Hotaru's shape looks ok if you don't compare her to other girls. The other senshi's overall shape also looks slender than the setting age.

I don't think it's a problem of magic, just that Chibiusa was grown into different ages.

Remember Usagi is also growing, Neo Queen Serenity is obviously taller and more slender than Sailor Moon in the first few seasons.

So it works for the other senshi as well.

So do you think Sailor Saturn is still 11 years who looks like a 14 or 15 year old? Or is she 14 or 15 when she was awakened after destroying Mistress 9's body?

Yeah, she looks 14-15 to me, just others also looks older/taller than their setting age.

She obviously looked younger and smaller in Stars.

Thanks. I'll probably just keep her original size for the arcade style.

I don't think she would look exactly like Mistress 9 when she grew up though, the hair style and costume is awful.

Demande is supposed to be 30 I heard (which makes scenes with him and Usagi all the more unpleasant/disturbing).
Compare to the manga, anime Demande's fixation on Serenity/Usagi wasn't explained that well. I guess they kept it to let him become as convincing as possible as a villain because other than that he wasn't really evil enough to stay as BMC's leader. Also to give Mamoru a chance to save Usagi.

The boys tend to look older than their age, yeah. Typical of shojo. The girls not really. Usagi even looks a little young than 14. I cracked my JH yearbook and most of the girls look older than her, in facial features and body proportions. They looked even older when they put on cosmetics and dressed up for parties. A few could pass for college students.
The kid on the right has a serious case of babyface, she looks younger than the stated age. The one on the right minus the ridiculous bust and makeup could easily fit in a yearbook for 8-9 grade.

Yeah he said his school year, not his actual age.
It is pretty much the same thing. He is second year of high school, his birthday is in August and we know they met Rei before her birthday, which is march 30, so at this point he is 16 and that summer in August he turned 17. The whole school year timelines in the manga are a mess. The girls shouldn't even all be in the same grade based on their birthdays, but they are.
