Was it more of Crystal or the Manga's problem?

Once in a while you get one these posts in one of the Facebook groups. I just read the comments for the :loltext:s such as this one:

Jokes on you, I hate Clamp limbs too. :P (I love nearly every other aspect of their art though, especially their 90's stuff)
That anime on the top left looks cool, by the way. Cartoony styles like that are so underappreciated.

You should see that one dude posting how Naoko draws their feet in the manga. :googly:

I don't hate limbs, I don't like the face and lack of expression. Most of the fighting scenes were also bad.

The art should have better. The manga is gorgeous. Some scenes looked great, others... not so much. I guess as a long time fan I was expecting it to be treated with more care (a bigger budget) by those responsible.

There is a repetitiveness in the manga, where one chapter is devoted to each inner. First arc is their awakening, second it's them being kidnapped. I like it in the manga but it didn't really translate well into the anime, particularly the second arc. Black Moon just sort of plodded along, hitting the plot points but it didn't go anywhere or created much tension for the viewer.

I do think they really turned it around with season 3. I loved Infinity and now I'm really looking forward to the Dream movies.

Personally, and this is my opinion, Crystal seasons 1-2 accurately followed Naoko’s aesthetic; the characters were tall, had big and expressive eyes, and had extra long limbs just like in the 90’s manga. Season III is a departure from the manga’s style, as is Eternal. The characters look young and shorter, sometimes we can’t barely see their noses, and they lost their the manga appeal.

Actually Naoko's early chapters were more of round face and cute little girls.

Her style evolved. Compare the first chapters with those from Infinity or the last ones. Usagi in Sailor Stars has extra long limbs and looks more like a fully grown woman than a teenager.

Yeah just like the anime also evolved that way, so I don't think Crystal's early style was accurate on the girls in the first 2 chapters. The only good looking character was Demande.
