Sailor Moon Eternal Box Office

We’re not going to write again pages about it. Netflix and in general streaming platforms are actually - HUGE deal for financial success. Just take the next Godzilla movie, HBO is gonna pay 200 millions for the exclusive. So imagine what the Netflix deal could bring to SM franchise (of course not that much but still).

And stop speaking about budget, etc WE HAVE NO IDEAD about budget costs and advertising about the movie. It’s not because we saw 5 photos here that we can extrapole than TOEI spend millions in publicity.

At this point we don’t know anything, specially now I highly doubt than TOEI was expecting a TOP1 movie in Japan... so yeah movie isn’t a huge success for sure in theaters (a flop... hmm well 2 weeks in top 10)... but there is still so much to come... really relax

No matter how you look at it it’s not great, is it? Japan just isn’t here for CrysEternal. There again I don’t think they are here for any kind of magical girl show other than Precure or Madoka (Not even sure if the latter is all that popular anymore?) Clear Card and Doremi aren’t exactly out here selling huge numbers. That being said Sailor Moon being the huge behemoth in was in the 90s seeing it out done by Doremi is slightly embarrassing. Though it’s less about the movies quality and more about the first season of Crystal and its failures still fresh in people’s minds. (is what I believe, anyway.)

Doesn’t help that it’s just basically a theatrical continuation from Season 3 which isn’t exactly a good place to start for casual fans who haven’t seen Crystal before. Not great that they didn’t even include any kind of introduction for fans out of the loop since the 90s. Would have been so easy to add a recap at the start of the movie for a couple of minutes..

C’mon foreign fans, save Eternal! (Whenever it releases)

There's WIXOSS. Already finished season 4 in Netflix. And there's Fate Kaleid Prisma Ilya. I don't why that's not on Netflix when it has 5 Fate series in it.


The only good news for me is that TOEI has recovered its income already (minus advertising and all) if each movie cost 100,000 US dollars. And also the fact Disney doesn't own the franchise. This would be a 3D movie by now if Disney gets its hands on it.

Would a movie cost $ 100,000? Take the example of Dragon Ball Super Broly, the budget was 8.5 million dollars.

I very much doubt that the film part 1 is 100,000 dollars. A series of 13 episodes costs an average of 250 million Yen.

Sailor Moon Eternal's budget, not including advertising, must be much more than an animated series budget.

I doubt very much that the Japanese market is sufficient to make profitable the expenses of creations + advertising.

How Much Does it Cost to Make an Animated Film?

We don’t know if the 8.5 million for Dragon Ball includes marketing. 250 million yen for a 13 episode series.. So over 2 million dollars. Sailor Moon Eternal won’t be as long as that, but let’s say it cost the same amount to produce. I’m more worried about the costs of marketing. Sailor Moon advertisements on trains, in magazines, on shop windows. It can’t be cheap. I very much doubt Toei has made money from cinema tickets alone.

On the upside they must have got a pretty penny from Netflix for worldwide distribution. And when it’s finally released if popular then it can only mean more money for them. We will have to consider merchandise and CD sales, too. Maybe they made a pretty sum from them.

I can’t believe I’m supporting such a money hungry company during the middle of a pandemic when many don’t even have a penny to their name anymore.. The things I do for Sailor Moon!

That's pretty much what kept the franchise going even with the disastrous budget/poor management of Seasons 1 and 2. The toy collection community is very active in Facebook.

I am a bit surprised that people in Japan still buy CDs.

So then it has probably made more than its proposed budget for the first film. Im assuming this doesn't include merchandise sales and it certainly doesn't include the Netflix boom and the second money.... C'mon Stars film and (future series).

How the hell does this mean SM cost $100.000. It said animated films cost from $10.000 to $200.000 PER FINISHED MINUTE. Eternal is 80 minute long so it cost at least $800.000

I think it would be fair to compare it to Digimon Last Evolution Kizuna. Does anybody know how much it cost? Cause all I can find is $6 million on the Spanish Wikipedia but there is no source....and it got a $2 million revenue in Japan...but a $20 million worldwide, mainly in China.
Sailor Moon could also be very popular in cinemas in Hong Kong, South Korea....dunno about China but definitely it would make money overseas.
If both moves make $2 million....Toei can count themselves lucky, and so can we. But let's be clear the pandemic has not helped, at all.

The international fan base is going to give Eternal all the money it needs to give us a Stars film, and hopefully the Netflix deal means more money to inject into a new series or movie or something. With Sailor Moon being on Netflix internationally, literally everyone can tune in to watch it.

Japan being Japan is only just starting to catch up to the rest of the world when it comes to online streaming..

Seriously? And I thought it was a very tech-oriented and innovative country.

People think so! They create PS5’s, robots and all sort of other amazing things. But then they still prefer to use fax machines (!!) over E-mail, still prefer using their hanko (name stamp) over digital signature and so many other types of antiquated technology.
