Even though I disapprove Naoko's decisions as a businesswoman, I believe that using the manga as a storyboard for Crystal and add little else is all on Toei. They were the lazy ones in this situation, since Naoko helped out with storylines for PGSM and other stuff in the franchise. Let's be fair.

Honestly, I'm glad the girls are more serious in the crystal. I don't want a goofy Minako in serious situations.(She is still goofy, but way less than the old anime) I didn't really like Reis character in the manga. (Because the whole hating men thing to me is just immature, and disgusting) I still like her elegance, and maturity. Im glad crystal, and the manga personalities. What is the point if they were the same as the 90s one. Crystal was meant to be a reboot not a remake of the 90s..Part the reason I was happy we got Crystal. Because I wanted an animated version closer to the manga. I got it was perfect no. They were issues adding a couple episodes would be better? In the first season. In the end I still enjoy it,and glad we got it.

Why the Naoko hate. There is no source that expliccitly say she asked them to do stuff in a certain way or she is pulling the strings. She did for the life action, and this is where the characters were probably the most developed. Why would she stop toei do it in this particular regard now?
I heard Naoko wasn't involved in Crystal at all, and frankly I don't think I'd blame any problems Crystal had on her. While she may have had flaws in her writing style, I'd mostly blame it on deadlines, in fact, she's said recently I heard that most of her anger towards the original anime was due to stress of having to meet them (though she wasn't happy back then with how Toei was trying to aim for even younger audiences and trying to take it into a separate story altogether, and even got in heated arguments with several Toei executives).

I just want them to not [BLEEP] it up again and release a great piece of animation. I like that the hired Tadano-san and I hope she'll pull out a mix between her 90s style and the manga, which means, a more grown up version of what she did in the first season. I don't want to see Pluto, Uranus and Neptune to look like teenagers as they sometimes did in season 3.
I also hope for fluid animations and well composed frames. Crystal had some serious issues with basic compositions. I also want some original transformations sequences and attacks that don't have to hide behind the 90s anime. And lat but not least: good storytelling! Don't use the manga as a storyboard! They can change some things, if necessary.

Weren't Haruka and Michiru teenagers anyway? :orly:

Either way, I agree, with everything else, and I also do want to have some original sequences for the attacks too.

Yes! That's exactly what happened! The original anime aired weekly, so new episodes had to be produced quickly.

In the shadows throwing roses at you
I can say the 90s anime was at it's best when it was leaning towards darker territory and at it's worst when trying to be too light hearted aiming at younger kids like with SuperS [I say the same with PGSM with sailor Luna I like the idea of sailor Luna but I'd prefer it if she looked like her manga/90s human self and not be a chibiusa stand in to appeal to a younger demographic no wonder Naoko was mad about toei pushing for younger audience appeal I would be too ] now I say this despite having some fav eps in SuperS still that arc would have been better told if the just did Dreams
Stars may not be a fav of mine in any version however the manga told it best

if I had SM my way it would be 90s Dark Kingdom [with Rei like her PGSM self] Doom Tree be it's own full season then Manga Black moon [except keep the Ayakashi sisters being healed as seen in 90s ] 90s S Manga Dreams and Manga Stars all blended uncut in it's full glory closely Naoko's vision with the difference having 90s developments on certain characters and villains that the manga didn't have into what I feel would be the perfect version of SM [and when I say manga I do not mean crystal cause even Crystal misses a few beats from the manga]

but that's my view everyone sees it their way

but yeah aside from issues coming from within the first crystal season the biggest flaw of crystal is them changing formats every arc
pick one format stick to it then make alternate versions later if and only if the first run does good, they can make a million versions of DBZ but can't figure out SM

Source? I've never heard this before. I know lots of people think Naoko was mad at Toei over certain things about the original 90's anime, but none of her statements that I've read suggest that to me. She expresses some disappointment about things like the Sailor Quartet not being included, or some confusion about changes the anime made, like the Three Lights being physically male, or some wry frustration over the anime killing off the Inners in the first season finale when she wasn't allowed to do that in the manga, but there aren't any indications that she was *angry* about any of those things. She was clearly involved with the series, contributing lyrics to many of the songs, and formed close relationships with many of the voice actors. She has a lot of love for the anime, so I don't know where this narrative that she hates it or was angry about it comes from.

Naoko was mad about the Starlights because she has a rule only females can be Sailor Senshi.

It's probably annoyingly nitpicky manga purists who said she hates it.

As I've pointed out elsewhere, there's no such rule stated in the manga. The only remark Naoko seems to have made on the matter is "All the Sailor Scouts are girls," which she said in response to questions about Uranus and the Starlights. Whether her intention was to clarify those characters' sexes or to establish a rule of lore is debatable. Given the ad campaign for the recent Crystal cross-promotion with Monster Strike was all about challenging gender norms and embracing non-binary identities, and Naoko certainly had to have approved the campaign, it's safe to say that she would at least today be okay with men and NB people as Sailors, if not back then.

In any case, the only actual quotes from Naoko that I can find on the changes Toei made to Stars are from the fifth art book:

I really wanted to see Kakyuu’s Sailor Senshi figure in the anime. Always mysterious, why Toei didn’t put her in?
The Sailor Starlights were supposed to have even more minor roles than the monsters. So when it looked like they were gonna get leading roles in the anime, I was totally surprised! Even more surprising, before transforming into Sailor Senshi they were men?! I was really shocked to learn that.
It’s a shame that these two [Mnemosyne and Lethe] didn’t appear in the anime, because OSABU and I really like them. For me especially their hairdo and dress ^_^ OSABU likes Sailor Lethe. He likes strong-willed women.
Like in the manga, I thought the anime would also feature these costumes [the Sailors' eternal uniforms], so why did Toei not put them in??? Surely (as it always is) I have no idea what goes on with the staff on the television side of things.
She expresses mild confusion and disappointment in these quotes, but nothing even remotely approaching anger.

I agree in many ways. The manga has it's strenghs and flaws and the 90s anime as well. Even Crystal did some things well, especially:

I thought, Crystal would connect both, but so far it failed most of the time. There are only a couple of episodes, based on the manga, who remind me of the spirit of the 90s anime. Among them are:

Act 4: Masquerade - Feels like a filler that gives us some character developement, we see the shitennou together, Moon, Mercury and Mars teaming up, Sailor Moon's new attack...well done episode!

Act 5: Sailor Jupiter - My favourite episode of season 1. Well written, a lot of stuff happens, Makoto's personality get's a great tridimensional introduction, doesn't feel rushed, good action

Ep. 17: Secret- Sailor Jupiter: Feels again like a filler, because we get introduced to a Asanuma, a lot of characters developement here (for SMC). Nicely animated.

Ep. 29: Infinity 2 - Ripples: This episode has it all, well written, well animated, humour, character development, new attacks, mystery...Eudial got killed a bit too quickly, but that's the only thing I'm nitpicking.

Ep. 32 Infinity 5 - Sailor Pluto: This is maybe my favourite episode of SMC. again with a soft Sailor Jupiter focus. It gives me many 90s vibes and the animation is, especially in the 2nd half, perfect. Finally one of the witches transforms into the monster she is.

So, six seasons? I like that idea! Yes! PGSM Rei is awesome. I loved Ami and Rei in PGSM, they're my favorites!

I love and enjoy the manga fully, however flawed it is. I really do not like manga purists/elitists either. I, however cannot find it within to watch either Crystal or the original 90's anime. The live action is practically is the only adaptation I enjoy most, after the manga.
