Thanks for posting this.

"Supernatural" makes more sense, I agree, but "spectre" had a better ring to it and rolled off the tongue easier. Same with "malefic", though I do appreciate the aliteration with "beguiling". Maybe "Alluring Black Crystal" or "Bewitching Black Crystal" would've worked better.

I'll get used to the new terms.

The 3rd issue of the Eternal Edition is out...and boy are you ready for changes to the names?

This one is like "That'll confuse people between Supernatural Club and Supernatural Sisters, as if these girls made the club at the school." And, the Black Crystal...see the tweets below.

Thoughts?
I think supernatural sisters name is the closest translation you are going to have.

At least they are going out of the way to justify their word choices.

Nobody is ever going to agree 100% with all the word choices as translation is an art not a science but if it's justified properly it doesn't bother me that much.

While specter sisters is something I am used to, I can agree on supernatural as closer in meaning. They are putting a lot of effort on the translation. I really like the idea behind the beguiling Crystal and the way it was explained by them. They are really creative as translators and I really hope I wll be able to sell my old box sets so I can start collecting these.

I like "Beguiling Black Crystal" a lot more than "Malefic Black Crystal" (but personally I'll go on calling it the Grim Crystal).

I never liked "Spectre Sisters" (especially since it should have been "Specter Sisters" given it's a US translation) and I don't like "Supernatural Sisters" either. To quote my own blog, here are my thoughts on the matter:

In Japanese folklore, ayakashi refers to any supernatural entity . . . that “appears above the surface of some body of water.” In many stories, they are “the vengeful spirits of those who died at sea,” but in others, they are simply atmospheric ghost lights, a phenomenon often associated with UFO sightings . . .

Given there’s nothing remotely nautical or maritime about the Four Sisters, it seems doubtful [Naoko] intended to reference vengeful sea ghosts with her use of ayakashi. With UFOs, crop circles, and related phenomena at the center of the Black Moon Clan arc, it seems far more likely she was referring instead to atmospheric ghost lights.

For this reason I think the best way to translate Ayakashi no Yon Shimai would be with a word that evokes that connection, that evokes the experience of witnessing that strange and mysterious phenomenon. “The Four Eerie Sisters” is probably the best option, with “Uncanny,” “Unearthly,” and “Otherworldly” being good possibilities as well.
Of course, I use the more evocative "Corpse Candle Sisters" on my blog, but I wouldn't expect that term to be used in an official translation.

"Beguiling Black Crystal" makes it sound like a silly name that no one would ever take seriously. "Beguile" is one of those Oldworldian words that no one ever uses in normal dialogue, only ever really seeing use by those who are specifically trying to sound hammy and overdramatic for comedic purposes. And the alliteration in this case makes it sound even more goofy, when it's supposed to be, yannow, a weapon of mass destruction meant to commit genocide by a kingdom of terrorists.

I'm skipping whatever issues cover the Black Moon and the first half of the Infinity manga arcs, that arc and a half in the manga aged as well as milk.

Here is the art for Vol. 6
I still hate that Naoko draw Michiru in the exact same pose that Usagi and Chibiusa in the exact same pose that Setsuna.

Are there any questionable or contentious terms from the Dream and Stars arcs though? The only things that might change are Amazoness Quartet becoming Amazones Quartet, Aluminum Siren becoming Aluminum Seiren, and Tin Nyanko becoming Tin Kitty (or something similar), but none of those seem particularly likely (though I'm hoping for the first one).

It is nice how these new translators are actually translating and adapting it, putting some effort. I'm as far away from a native--speaker as you can be and even I found the old translation awkward... So I wish the anime adaptation didn't use the old translation of the manga for reference.

From the Dream, there was also the names of the Amazon Trio and in Stars, the constant use of the phrase "heavenly body".

"Legendary Silver Crystal" will be kept for constancy though.

The 4th Eternal Edition has hit twitter.
Spoiler: show

I thought volume 4 would include a few chapters from the Infinity Arc, despite already being told the short stories had been divided up among the volumes instead of being in their book. This won't come as a shock to anyone familiar with the Japanese release, but it surprised me.

I'm not totally sure, but I think those short stories actually happens during the Black Moon arc, so it's much better that they include them here.
There are several episodes of ChibiUsa's Picture Diary, but all of them happens at different times of the story (in the past I thought that all of them happened at the Dreams Arc, thanks to the anime).
Each arc is in 2 volumes, the widest one I think is Vol. 6 because it includes the end of Infinity Arc, the ChibiUsa diary entry that happens during the Infinity arc, and the Kaguya short story.

I believe they are published accord8ng to the date they first appear in Nakayosh.
