Honestly not surprised. They prpbably didn't have much success with the tv broadcast, but the channel wasn't quite right for it. They had some weird censurship going on, and I guess people didn't like thedub that much. It was in my opinion great though. Nice, fitying cast, good script. I wonder how they managed to convice Naoko to change Mamoru's name. But still I guess once that tv channel didnt get the ratings they dropped the franchise. It sucks when they drop something. They could have at least give you subbed dvds if dub was not profitable.
I spoke closely with Canal J at the time for Sailor Moon Crystal: the audience was not there.
I had contacted the dubbing studio, Toei had planned to dub season 3 (they even made a quote), but following the withdrawal of Canal J, they stopped everything, to the point that the dubbing studio me said the project was dead.
Censorship was not very present at the base either. Just a scene from a season 1 episode, and in season 2 there are only two or three censors (the scene with a gun, and a few scenes with Black Moon burning people I think).
I think that the bad audience comes mainly from the fact that in France, people prefer to download than to benefit from a program in legal offer.
Especially since there was a fansub that didn't hesitate to make Blu-Ray RIPs with a synchronized French track available.
