Fisheye still had to die in the end because gay characters weren't allowed to be happy in older fiction. Fiore also had to die a noble death to protect Usagi and Mamoru's relationship at the end of the R movie. This is known as the Bury Your Gays trope http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BuryYourGays
Objection! Fisheye was brought back to life and given a happy ever after! And it was never stated that Fiore died, the last we see of him, he's a child and floating through space again!

Right, I'm aware of the bury your gays trope, but Fish Eye is far from playing that trope straight. You could argue he's a sort of slanted example, but the narrative definitely implies he'll be happy, and I think it's cool that Mamoru plays such an important role in getting him there.

As another gay Sailor Moon fan, I was bothered by the 90s anime portrayal of Zoisite but I hadn't thought of Kunzite being stereotyped too until this thread pointed it out. Now that I look at it, I can definitely see some stereotyping going on here. If you look at Jaedite's plots, they're stuff like targeting theme parks and romantic cruise ships. Kunzite's plots are more feminine and based on gay stereotypes. You see this with Fisheye's traps in SuperS too where he spends a lot of time going after ballet dancers and fashion designers which are also out-dated gay stereotypes.
Honestly I don't really see the problem of Zoisite. I thought he was a pretty good character. Just because he is a femme guy doesn't make him a bad character. Also I don't think that Kunzite's plots were gay themed at all. He was trying to make events that would attract the Moon Princess. So he thought up a lot of princess themed events.

Also I don't think that the 90s show portrays all gay men as evil. The fashion designer couple was thought to be gay. Also Zoisite and Kunzite's relationship was depicted as a redeeming feature of the couple plus if you know their backstory you know that they were originally good but brainwashed to serve Beryl because they were led to believe that Princess Serenity bewitched Prince Endymion. Also Fisheye most certainly did not die in the end but he and the other Amazon Trio were taken to Elysion, given Dream Mirrors and had happy endings. Fiore didn't really die either he just gave Princess Serenity some of his life force and then left most likely to recuperate.
