I personally always thought that the plan of Toei at the beginning in 1997 was to finish the classic anime with a film based on the last manga chapters (totally different than the anime’s story).

but I guess TOEI knew and didn’t want to lose money and time. What did take the place of SM on tv ? I don’t remember

To be fair, the manga threw all the inners + outers under the bus... they all disappear —much like Mars, Mercury, and Jupiter disappeared in the Black Moon arc—and we only get to see them again as Galaxia’s servants later.
The quick deaths of both the Inner and Outer teams is one of the manga's weaker aspects, to be honest. I want to see this improved upon in the Stars adaptation, I think it would be best if the Outer Soldiers were to be offed first, all while setting up defense systems from within their castles. Their Sailor Crystals would then be stolen by Galaxia as she's fighting them one-by-one. As for the Guardian Deity soldiers, they'd stay with Sailor Moon a while longer. The Four Guardian Deity Sailors would divide their between castle defense and high school.

I would hate if they made one film instead of two.

I suppose the first movie should adapt only these events:

1. Mamoru allegedly goes to Harvard. The Three lights arrive. Seiya starts sensing something special in Usagi, e.g. love, the fact that she is a Princess like the one she is searching for...

2. then Jupiter and Mercury die.

3. then the Star lights are introduced as Sailor senshi.

4. then, Rei and Venus make a plan to find out if the Star lights are the enemy (there is even a moment of anger and silliness between them).

5. then, Sailor Venus and Mars get killed by Galaxia.

6. Meanwhile, there is the revelation that Chibi Chibi is a senshi and Artemis, Luna, and Diana get injured. I think that by this point the Princess that the Sailor Stars had been looking for appears. It is also explained to Usagi that the four inner senshi needed their crystals to live and Galaxia stole them.

8. At this point, Usagi keeps having repeated thoughts that Mamoru is gone, as well. She can’t sense the Golden crystal, I guess.

9. The four senshi go each to their own respective castles to gather data, find out what is wrong. And they get killed. At this point, it should be revealed that Galaxia went there led by chaos disguised as a Wiseman (Black Moon arc)

10. Eternal Sailor Moon, the Starlights, and the Starlights’ Princess, along with Chibi Chibi decide to go to Sagittarius Zero, where Galaxia is.

Then movie #2 can follow with the actual battle & even more information.

Stars is about 10 acts, it is a short arc, but a lot of information is presented at once and I believe viewers would have question marks all over their heads if they are given only one movie.

It was what I thought too at that time. I totally expected a movie or an OAV using the manga last chapters, which would explain why they did Stars ending quite open. 25 years later we are still waiting :whee:

I think what followed SM was Cutie Honey Flash (with lot of SM staff working on it).

Naoko originally planned to have Sailor Stars end with Galaxia being Sailor Chaos and Usagi being Cosmos, although her being Cosmos(at least the part where she is NQS senshi form) was kept in the Manga, I would have wanted that ENDING to be in Stars Crystal if they changed it from the Manga.

Original Ending Sailor Galaxia is Chaos acc. to Materials Collection
Anime Plot Galaxia gets possessed by Chaos
Manga Plot Chaos is Usagi's enemy in the future

I suspect that might had happen HAD TOEI adapted the baseline plot of Dream arc and Stars in Sailor Stars which was Naoko's original plot line which includes that ending.

You have to understand and keep in mind that plots are changing also constantly in autor’s mind.
Even if she planned that, at the beginning, for the end of the series and this character, it doesn’t mean that she didn’t change her mind during her writing process. I remember in a French interview in 1997 that she said that the end was the end she always wished for for her story so...

I really think that the end was perfect, I like the big bad being CHAOS the origin of pure Evil and the philosophy behind the reborn of stars etc... I wish she added a bit more chapters/pages before the end because it comes in few pages so much informations, characters. Movies/Tv Series will have to clean a lot this pacing.

Oh but I remember seing some of the old cartoon in France (before I ever watched sailor moon) and I loved it. I really have to take some time some day. But I’m the kind of person who like to see EVERYTHING when I tried something new and there is some many different seasons and adaptation of Cutie Honey

Flash is the only one I enjoyed, to be honest and is pribably the one most people don't like...

I feel like it's gotten a little more appreciate lately, but yes, it's such a underappreciated gem (and where I got my username from).

It's also weirdly more in line with the tone of the Sailor Moon manga than the actual '90s anime adaptation of Sailor Moon with its focus on drama and romance over comedy. Even the ending felt ripped straight from Takeuchi's manga.

Or do I just have a dirty mind? No, really, they thought the best way to find their princess was to form a boy band and sing a love song. Which she asks Seiya to sing to her while they get snuggly on the couch and while singing it, Seiya thinks of his crush Usagi.
I don’t think their love for their princess is romantic at all. It’s more like the three starlight’s have devoted their life to princess Kakyuu to the point where romantic relationships are out of question. Like how some people devote their lives to only loving Jesus. Doesn’t mean they love Jesus in a romantic sense but he’s the only “thing” they have their eyes on.

Also with the whole boy band thing. They figured they would garner more attention as males...and they did. Gathering all that energy from female fans would make then more noticeable and be able to spread their message further to the princess.

Seiya seeing usagi instead of his princess is the same thing as the Jesus analogy. Seiya is devoted to the princess yet he/she is being distracted by romantic love/ usagi.

At least this is the way I interpreted it. Hope this helps

I really want to see what Sailor Chaos looks like in Crystal Stars.

I did not like the part of the Anime where they gave the parts of Usagi's personality to Galaxia (the part which is shown by Sailor Cosmos and Princess Sailor Moon) and have Usagi lose her transformation in Episode 200, I find the anime plot of Stars is so sexist in that aspect.
