BF's following Manga?

Perhaps some of you have already over-analized this but for thoses of you who aren't freaks in this way: I notice that Minako and Rei happen to be quite close in the manga (towards the end esspecialy) and it seems to be the same way with BGSM. but I also see an effort to pair Ami and Mako up and BFs. Perhaps I just try too hard, or this had already been answered. Eh. What can i say? I have a lot of time on my hands.

When I was a kiddy, BF used to be a not terribly sophisticated code for Boyfriend, as in "He's her BF." Likewise GF was also popular. Not that that helps us too much here.

I was actually DYING to see the writers of PGSM do something that was pretty much never done in the anime or even in the manga- team up Venus and Mercury! I had my hopes up in PGSM because a few times they had teamed up Mars and Jupiter, a relatively uncommon anime/manga pairing!
Unfortunately, with the exception of Act 22's short battle between Venus and Dark Mercury, there has been basically NO interaction in the live action series between my two FAVORITE Sailor Moon characters!
Maybe I should take up writing fanfics!
