Is this show all about Brainwashing? I only watch the 90 anime never read the manga.
if we just go by the 90s anime let's see what I can recall here

we got season 1 with Chiba into evil Endy after the silver crystal appears

R with Chibiusa into Blacklady

Demand with his eye to Usagi to get her to submit to him but she usually would break it off or Chiba would as in the case of the episode in Crystal Tokyo where Usagi was kidnapped by Diamond/Demand and he saved her

also in R there was the episode with Ami where a Droid tried to convince her the others were against her

SuperS with Nehelenia's back story into how the mirror changed her into a dark version of herself

Sailor Stars 1st arc with Nehelenia getting chiba with the mirror shard in his eye

and also Sailor Stars I suppose the Animamates could be considered as such especially going by the case of Tin Nyanko

S with Hotaru doesn't count as she had 2 beings inside her Sailor Saturn and Mistress 9 that's more possession than brain wash

there's probably other examples but yeah my conclusion is that it's a common occurrence nothing more.

There's that other droid Akamuju who also entered :usagi:'s mind while she was asleep. And Nehellenia again trapping her in a dream.

Reminds me how scary Purple Man was in Jessica Jones. It's actually more frequent in Marvel comics. Makes me curious if the New Mutants film will be part of MCU or still stuck on Foxverse Xmen.

It's closer to the manga in every sense they could do...
Frankly, all this sounds like is pointless whining, and acting like everything from before was somehow perfect...
Except for when they changed it so the Sailor Soldiers no longer destroy the Four Generals and Venus doesn’t get to be bad ass and kill Beryl with the Moon Sword and the girls spent the first arc more time being in peril than being a badass.

And sure the 90s animation was cheap and corner cutting and overly dependent on stock footage but the Crystal animation just....wow

It’s like The Killing Joke of Sailor Moon series. When you do a rote adaptation but then add additional stuff that is garbage it makes it a worthless adaptation because the better version is just the source material.

Everyone in Sailor Moon becomes either brainwashed or possessed and turned into a monster—that happens in every episode. The OP must have watched the entire show at once, got impatient with so much brainwashing, and felt even more impatient upon posting here and being misunderstood for stating what is distinctly an obvious fact.

there are censors in Japan, you know
Broadcast standards and practices has nothing to do with my criticism.

You can still have the Senshi be bad ass and destroy Beryl and the Shitenou and comply with Japanese tv standards.

Also pretty sure Japanese tv standards don’t have a rule that female super heroes must spend more time in peril than in action. But I could be wrong.

It kinda does, because Japan still doesn't have the concept of "lead female(s) kicking ass" is ok to have as a norm. Granted, it's gotten better over the years, but its still lagging behind so many other places, and they still run their shows based on their countries audience and standards.

The 90s series literally had no problem with this so you’re really reaching

It seem like all the villains had some sort of mind controlling power.
Little nitpick: mind control was present from the very start. The Sailor Moon frachise started with the one-shot that was retroactively made into Codename: Sailor V's Act 3, and the youma there, Pandora, used a special TV broadcast to brainwash most of Minato Ward, including Minako's parents and best friend (Minako herself was exposed to the broadcast but resisted it long enough for Artemis to get her away from it). And while Codename: Sailor V was particularly heavy on it (out of 15 chapters, ten had villains using some sort of mind control), it's been used in most if not all entries. Including the anime, where Jadeite used it as early as episode 2 (he would reuse it at least three other times: to brainwash the staff at a gymnasium, to control the crew of a cruising ship, and to sick hundreds of cops on Usagi, Ami and Rei at New Tokyo International Airport) and Nephrite had his youma alter the actions of every single one of his victims in order to better drain them.

Simply put, the series, had an abundance of villains with mind control abilities, the manga, and thus Crystal, simply doesn't have enough other kinds of villain to make it less notable compared to the first anime.
