Sailor Moon might not be as popular as Dragon Ball, but it is still beloved franchise around the world, and it really doesn't deserve way Toei treat it :( While CCS Clear Card look absolutely beautiful, and it feel exactly like next episode of old anime, characters are little older and more experienced, but other than that, they still act same way they used to :) I absolutely love CCS, and im very sad Toei dropped the ball with Crystal, ok, 2nd season was pretty good, but now they change things AGAIN by making next arc 2 movies, and i honestly don't care if they have too many anime to produce or deadlines they have to made.

Dragon Ball is such a repetitive anime. I think it's only popular because it's a fun show. Sailor Moon Crystal is getting the short stick because it's the same old 20+ year old story. At least, DB gives its fans some new characters and a new setting, even if it follows the "bad guy comes, time for a tournament, new power up for Goku with Vegeta lagging behind" trope

Sailor Moon has been hoovering around this same story forever. Only the musicals seem to dive into new territory. If anyone knows why it's so hard for a new Sailor Moon anime series to surface, share. DBZ, Saint Seiya, Cutey Honey..etc all get new series or spin offs.

The Sailor Moon story is dated and needs some new power pushed into it.

Perhaps the biggest fall of SM is that DB utilizes it's universe, the Creator of Sailor Moon appears to not want to as far as I know.

Now what if in this case, Toei was planning on doing a new Sailor Moon series but their instructions (orders) were to produce a more faithful adaptation of the manga first before they could do a "new era" of Sailor Moon.

They've been dragging this series along forever now. Crystal should have been done unless they are planning something spectacular in the future, or just baiting the Crystal franchise with the fanbase to get them to buy as much Sailor Moon merchandise.

Yeah, I watched an episode and had the exact same feeling about the characters: they are more mature, but this is a beautifully animated and written sequel that blends extremely well with the former series. Some of the old score of is also being used and this allows fans to transition from the former anime to the new one. The animation is gorgeous, the OP is amazing, and I am actually interested in watching the whole thing (despite clearly not being a CCS fan anymore; I am a grown up man and feel more attracted to CLAMP's adult stories, such as xxxHOLIC and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles).

As for TOEI and PRINCESS NAOKO PLANNING (PNP)... *ROLLS EYES* :vanish:

Or bring back Junichi Sato and Kunihiko Ikuhara and and give them free reign to do whatever they want with a new series. I'd watch it :keke:
I wish they also brought back all the original Japanese voice cast for the series. The new Japanese cast is fine but they just sound like generic anime voice artists and lack the creative acting talents of the original cast that made them so unique. What makes it even more frustrating is many of the Japanese cast in Sailor Moon are also in CCS, such as Aya Hisawaka, Emi Shinohara, and Megumi Ogata, and they had no issues with returning to their previous roles with CCS. I think they clearly would have returned to Crystal if Toei asked them to. The only one of the new cast members that really stands out to me is Sailor Uranus' Japanese voice artist who I think did an impressive job with her character, but all the other Japanese voice artists in Crystal sound too much the same to me.

Ikuhara has openly said he turns down TOEI projects for "various reasons."

ANN: Are you still friendly with the people at Toei Animation?

IKUHARA: They're always asking me to take on some new projects, and I keep turning them down. I'm still good friends with the producer of Sailor Moon. We keep in touch, and whenever he has a new project underway he wants me to do something on it. I always turn it down for various other reasons.
Source

Heck, TOEI was dumb, its executives dismissed Ikuhara and his incredible idea for the SuperS movie.

The other directors, voice actors, etc, may not to wish to return to TOEI for the same "various reasons" as Ikuhara.

Perhaps, money is the problem; judging by the quality of the animation of many TOEI anime (outsourced), it is pretty obvious that TOEI wants to maximize profits while investing as little as possible.

While Ikuhara and Toei certainly have bad blood between them, Ikuahra is also more focused on his own original projects and series these days, like with Yuri Kuma Arashi, the new Utena musical, and he also has a new anime he's working on with MAPPA. It should be noted though that Junichi Sato is going to direct the new Pretty Cure series for Toei.

It's a crime to let Junichi Sato direct "Precure" instead of "Sailor Moon." On the other hand, that fact tells us that "Precure" is far more important than "Sailor Moon."

Heck, if TOEI had kept the score of the original anime, Crystal would have felt much better than it was.

While it's frustrating how things turned out, at the end of the day, we know none of the behind the scenes details about Crystal or the reasons for Toei's decisions, and any speculation about it is pure gossip.

Well this is really your opinion, because whatever good or bad points Crystal has, I think the BGM are really wonderfull.

Reported.

OT: I don't understand this "Sakura makes Crystal look bad" obsession.
Sakura appeals to a different generation of fans, and its success/failure will not, and does not, affect Crystal in any shape or form. Crystal looks bad because it's bad, period.
The reason why Sakura's animation is better is simple: CLAMP are not just mangakas, they're business women and are notoriously more controlling of their brand than Naoko is.
As much as, licensing-wise, Takeuchi seems like a demanding author, it is clear that's the only aspect she's passionately involved when it comes to her franchise. The 90's anime took a lot of artistic liberties, just like the musicals; PGSM is atrocious visually-wise, and so is Crystal.
I think it's clear she doesn't have big demands when it comes the quality of Sailor Moon related products. And CLAMP obviously does.
As for Toei, their current staff is incompetent. They simply don't have enough talented people, and adapted horribly to digital animation. None of their titles will be good until they hire better writers/animators.

I disagree with this because it would have led to similar complaints to what DBZ fans had over the way Kai's first half was handled after Kenji Yamamoto was fired. It was nice to have the original DBZ score back but the music placement for it in Kai was awful and they used as little of the soundtracks as possible making it more repetitive than usual and also ruining a lot of the show's good moments in the process.

Imagine them using something completely different from the 90s soundtracks for Uranus & Neptune's transformations. I bet the response would have been no different from the new piece that was used for Crystal (which I agree wasn't that great, at least compared to what the 4 inners had for season 3).

While I love the original anime's soundtrack a lot, I think the BGM for Crystal was probably it's highest selling point. especially for the first two seasons. Even CCS had new music created for the sequel series though it also reused some of the original score.

I think the recasting was an intentional decision on Toei's part. With Crystal being a reboot, they probably thought it would be best to have a fresh take on everyone. But I also wish they would have brought back the original cast. Screentime is so limited in Crystal that most of the new VAs don't even get a chance to leave an impression. At least with the original cast we would have nostalgia to fall back on.

I do wish we could have heard some of the original score in Crystal, but it's probably best they went the way they did. The original composer is sadly R.I.P, so getting the rights to re-use his music might have been tricky. Plus, there's no way he could have contributed any new music to the series. :(
