Those are probably the darkest ones overall. I would say there were ~dark~ moments in other episodes, like in 166 when Nehelenia threw an unconscious kid off a floating barge, or when Mistress 9 removed Chibimoon's pure heart. Nephrite's death was pretty grim and visceral, which might be why he bled green (and it was his blood that was green, not some kind of sap from the youma's vines) instead of red. To make the scene seem less violent, I guess.

No other episode I can think of now tops the ones you guys mentioned, but the last two arcs of S, in the episodes where the Witches 5 kept betraying one another were darker and more twisted than usual. Whether you are envious, spiteful or power-hungry, to kill a comrade as cold-bloodedly as Mimete and Tellu did is nasty enough to classify.

Hey, didn't Pharaoh 90 himself ultimately betray even Mistress 9 by releasing an energy blast against her after she summoned him, which nearly destroyed poor Hotaru's body? Now, that's what I call an ungrateful boss... like Big Bad, like minions.

Oh, and remember that episode in R where Demande captured Usagi? He didn't hurt her (not on screen, anyway) because the Tux saved her, but still, rendering a girl unconscious via hypnosis, kidnapping her, changing her clothes, lying her down on a bed AND trying to force yourself on her is pretty dark in my book.

The whole six part finale of Sailor Stars was really dark with Galaxia basically killing everyone on Earth with her dark lighting, all of Usagi's friends dying, and the Outers betraying her, and at one point Usagi considering becoming one of Galaxia's pawns if that means she can see her friends again.

The Witches were not friendly with each other in S so it makes sense that they didn't work together. But they seemed to be on good terms in Crystal. They should've just worked together and fought the senshi every time. I don't think a combo blast of Charm Buster, Fire Buster, Mandragora Buster, Mosaic Buster, and Ribbon Buster would have any problems taking out Moon Spiral Heart Attack.

I always found Tellu being killed by her own Hyper Tellun to be pretty dark. And seeing Mimete fall into cyber abyss was oddly sad despite how evil she was.

I don't know if it's dark but it's pretty creepy when you think about it that you were going to school the whole year with an alien that wanted to kill you for stealing their boyfriend.

Yeah I don't think anything tops this. The first thing that came to mind on reading this was the scene where Galaxia tells Sailor Moon to look at the dying city and says "look at this fantastic scenery! Do you still harbor the pathetic illusion that this world will be saved?" Oh yeah, and this is playing. https://youtu.be/aWBOAm213Wg?t=3m8s It just doesn't get much worse than that... Well, until Sailor Moon herself and Chibi Chibi die too...

If we're talking overall episodes then Ep. 45 is the first thing that comes to mind.

Other than that the tail end of S and Stars.

Episode 111 was pretty melancholy all throughout unlike some other dark episodes. With stuff like Neptune's "death" and Haruka's very possible suicide attempt at the end, it's got to be a contender.

My vote goes for the finale episodes of Stars, with everyone's deaths. I think I cried more during those episodes than I did for the the other season finales.

I found the end of SuperS and beginning arc of StarS to be rather dark as well, with Nehelenia's bit.

I'm haven't exactly finished S just yet, but the last one I watched so far was the ine with the death of Telulu or whatever her name was - that took an extemely twisted turn for the worse, now didn't it?

I think 24 - Nephrite's death - was an especially notable one, mostly due to it being the very first major dark moment in the series. Other mentions worthy:

42 (tragic Minako backstory)
45 (everyone dies)
70 (Koan has a mental breakdown)
Whichever one had Chibiusa becoming Black Lady
Uranus and Neptune's "deaths" in S
Ami and Rei's pure heart episodes

...And that's pretty much all I can name off the top of my head. Haven't seen the end of S, SuperS or Stars at all, so I can give the verdict when I reach them. Better stock up on tissue boxes too just in case.

My vote goes for episode 45 because watching the senshi die felt at the time frightfully unexpected.
