Do people still watch the Dic Dub unironically?

I can't find too much fault with the Dic dub because even though it's not as faithful as people would like it to be I felt the production was clearly doing the best job that they could to deliver a quality product that would be marketable. I think some of the voice acting is hammy here and there really with side characters and stuff but the main casts are clearly taking the work seriously and I think even though their intrepretations of some of the characters are a bit different they did a great job in making it their own. Although I think the original performances in it's native Japanese are great I don't much care for the music at all really sometimes it just doesn't really do anything to create the appropriate atmosphere for the scene so I think the Dic dub is better in that regard. I mean for that era they really put a lot of work into the show.

I will rewatch certain scenes. A lot of times for the music or just to hear the VAs to help me remember what I would like a SM dub to sound like.

Amy's insult is based on that: she's saying he should leave them alone and stick to touching up his dark roots. It's a very silly line.

For some reason, I really love the episode where they learn about the past in the DIC dub. From Terri Hawke's funny read of "You're lying!!!" at the start to the heartfelt speech of Queen Serenity finishing with "On behalf of the moon, you will be free again."

I hope we get an retelling someday where that actually happens in the story.

I really appreciate The dic dubs geeky sense of humor they add jokes in that are probably inappropriately placed to quite a few people but I think they are fun."He is tuxedo mask I don't believe it" in that silly robotic voice of is my absolute fave dub line.

Disney/Buena Vista only released 12 random episodes to VHS before Doom Tree, with two episodes per tape. The Doom Tree boxset was the only time they released a large number of episodes in chronological order. You can view scans of all the tape boxes here: Sailor Moon Uncensored: Misc - Buena Vista's DiC VHSs. I guess they would be good collector's items if you're not trying to get the whole series.

I'd like to add a needless note about this one.

While Kunzite/Malachite's hair is clearly white, in the 80's it really was a big trend to dye one's hair platinum blonde, which is very, very close to white. Since this general also has tanned skin (which was also, very big in the 80s), this was very much the look of a Hollywood "dude" and the long hair was surfer-esque. A prime example of this look is Ric Flair in his heyday, even though he differs in actual behavior in many regards.

By the mid 90's, these trends had faded a little (the platinum hair first...it took a little longer for extreme tanning to fall out of favor), but was still present. It's funny because while it may have only been meant as a general insult, Sailor Mercury isn't just mocking his appearance; she's saying he's out of style. Out of character for the Ami Mizuno we know, to be fair, but in the old dub's context it does make sense.

And in a full circle moment, the ganguro craze became popular in Japan afterward.

Most people don't have that as a natural hair color so she is telling him to "bleach" his roots. Meaning his brown hair is growing to change the color to grey/sliver with bleach.

Not really, once you bleach your hair if you use toner you can make it grey/silver. The first step is to bleach so the insult makes sense.

I absolutely loved it as a kid, but when I got older and had access to the uncut Japanese version I really started disliking the dub. Not only for the corny dialogue and strange censorship decisions, but also the voice actor choices, mainly Serena's actress. I found the Japanese voice a lot cuter and fitting once I heard it, and after that I always thought her dub voice sounded like a yodeling 30-year-old valley girl.

Having said that, I'm glad the dub was made. Otherwise, I'd probably never have heard of Sailor Moon. Or maybe I would have. The other potential outcome was the Toon Makers series getting greenlit instead of the dub...

Having said that, I'm glad the dub was made. Otherwise, I'd probably never have heard of Sailor Moon. Or maybe I would have. The other potential outcome was the Toon Makers series getting greenlit instead of the dub...

Again I never watched it, only seen tons of clips, and I can tell that it is a very flawed dub, but it has its charm.

I almost see it as this thing where from one side I would really like to bash on it and saying how awkward and horrible it was at certain points, but on the other side I really fondly respect it. They were the people who first took care of the series when it came out in the US, the people who shaped millions of kids, teenagers, and adults alike; like Memento said, you can cringe at how many variations of the series you want, but you come to appreciate every one of them as their own distinct identity.

I still watch it out of the enjoyment (and slight nostalgia) of it being what I remember, but like the option above mentions, I am glad to see we got the original version with a new sub track so I can also enjoy that. (Or seeing it in its native language).

I'm one of those people who still appreciates the DiC dub as well as the Cloverway dub (yes, go ahead, shame me) because without it, I would've never discovered Sailor Moon or any other animes as well as create my own fan series. Yes I understand the voices were a bit off, the dialogue was switched around, but hey no dub is perfect. I thought the cheesy lines and voices were pretty memorable and if I could close my eyes and imagine listening to it, I could figure out who's who

Yea by the time S aired dubbed I had VHS tapes of the Japanese version. My mothers wallet was never the same as they were soooo expensive with only two episodes per tape.

Both versions had corny dialog. Optimum more so “let’s be hip and with it” Japanese more so “what the [BLEEP] were the writers smoking when they wrote this dialog”

I love Stephanie Sheh’s voice so much that I can’t describe it.

I wish it was less try hard. She’s definitely better suited for the role than Terri (who sounded too old for 14) and Linda. Tracey Moore was still the best being suited for a middle school girl and actually being able to act. A double threat the other three lacked.

Sometimes Robbie is a bit too generic for his own good and I think Bosch should have been given the role. Higgins is too generic. Vee is more suited for Crystal Rei than OG Rei. Her performance is technically fine but I don’t buy her as our favorite bi polar soldier. I think Cherami should have been the one voicing Usagi tbh she sounds young and naive and even though Minako is a ditz she’s also the most mature. Miller is fantastic as Jupiter and I quite like Taylor as Pluto.

Neptune and Uranus actors are whatever. I like Sandy Fox a teeny bit better than Tracey Hoyt but nowhere near as much as Sugar who sounded natural and less put upon.

I’m so glad Viz came back to redub it so I can watch it as intended but in my own language.
