Do you think Viz secretly has the rights to the old dubs?

It has nothing to do with nostalgia so drop it. I stated quite clearly the cwi dub was poor quality. It’s still at its best (mid-S to SuperS) better than Viz (which has done little to improve)

^Here’s an example. I’m not fond of Pluto’s valley girl voice and Linda still isn’t Tracey or Terri but it still sound like a professional product

Viz still sounds like it was put together by a group of fans in their basement
Sorry, but no one would find this scene better in the old dub unless the person was nostalgia driven.
Eudial and Pluto have totally unfitting high-pitched voices, and their "acting" is pitiful. Stephanie's work as Usagi is faaaaar from perfect, but she at least doesn't sound like a 40-year old smoker like Serena in CWi.

But the Portugal dub managed to pull off worse voices for Eudial and Usagi though.
But kudos to whoever was voicing the monster of the day. She sounded like she was having the time of her life.

I believe that if Viz planned to do something with the old dub, they would at the very least include it as an alternative track for their S/SuperS releases, since the old dub for these seasons is uncut.
I don't believe they are ever spending money in another release just for the sake of selling the old dub.

Linda's voice is a little too deep, but she really grew on me. By the time of the episode in that clip LifeGaveMeLemons posted, I feel like she had settled into the part and made it her own. I think of the three voice actresses who played Serena in the original dub, Linda was the best at playing the dramatic scenes. If I were in charge of the redub, would I cast Linda to play Serena again? No... But if I were in charge of a new series or movie about Sailor Cosmos, Linda would absolutely be my first pick.
I have to agree with this shes really really bad at doing a Terri Hawkes impression but shes good at doing the authoritative Sailor Moon voice and the dramatic scenes.

I try but still cannot understand what do you mean - Pluto's Cloverway voice sounds like a fan to me, Linda will never be taken seriously by me, Eudial voice is horrible. I cannot find anything wrong with the way Viz dub sounds. Sure it s not perfect, but no dub is. However for me Cloverway has been cringy, though some voices are ok - for minor characters mostly. Dic did a much better voice casting, while Viz only screwed Shingo and Naru for me, the rest of the cast is totally fine.
To me the more annoying voice Eudial has in the CWI voice is more fitting she sounds more like the sort of crazy weirdo who would leave a bunch of messages on your answering machine and pretend to play the organ in a fancy church for the dramatic effect.

Or ya know Cwi’s dub (after a rough start) is still better than Viz even if it’s by no means good.

Linda Ballatyne wasn’t a right fit for Usagi but her performance itself by this point was fine.

Susan Aceron’s valley girl thing is all wrong for Pluto but there’s nothing wrong with the acting.

Stephanie Sheh has a fitting voice and that’s about it. It’s still a bleh performance.

This is very subjective. I haven't grown up with the old dub so I am not biased. My personal opinion is while Dic dub has its charms, Clowerway dub is aweful. You think Lnda is on point I find her laughable. You think Pluto'sacting as fine, I find it amateurish and vague. I don't think a person that hasn't watched this as achild would ever say it is better, or even good. To cherish your memories and experiences is lovely, but don't be delusional...

With the CWI era dub especially, you have to keep in mind that the cast did not get scripts ahead of time, didn't have a lot of familiarity with the series, didn't have the luxury of doing multiple takes as the production was very rushed, and they were directed by someone who didn't speak English very well. While they didn't always give perfect performances, you can still see that they were trying their best, and their raw talent shines through.

The Viz cast, on the other hand, are working under far more favorable circumstances, so there's no excuse for their performances to be so inconsistent and wooden. While there are some talented actors in their cast, and certainly the dreadfully unnatural dialog isn't doing any of them any favors, it's clear that overall they simply don't have the talent that the original cast did.

Do dub voice actors in the US get scripts ahead of time? In a lot of countries, the first contact the voice actors have with the dub script is right when they are going to record. They watch the scene and read the script three times or less before recording, and do multiple takes.

I don't find the new dub perfect by no means. It is a dub,I don't expect much from them, as ling as they are faithful and there is nothing distractingly bad. I like mist of the Viz voices, I find them nice. Nothing can ever beat the original anyway. I would watch a dubbed version only when i am too lazy to read subtitles or for shows that I want to get over with faster. So I am pribably not the right person to give opinion anyway.

To be proper, there were 2 versions of the CWI S/SuperS dub: one with visual edits for the Toonami airings (which was also released on VHS) and the visually uncut DVD version.

Yes you're right Viz knows there are fans of the old dub BUT are there enough fans to justify spending time and money on a new release ? - I would say they have decided there is not.

That's why I said - if you want to convince Viz there is a SUFFICIENT market for them to work on the release make a petition.

A few emails / posts on a forum / questions at conventions DOES NOT make a business case for working on a new disc release.
While I'm glad you have thankful you have provided some concrete solutions....it's sadly too late.

The real time to convince anyone to release the old dub was before Sailor Moon was re-licensed, not several years afterward.

By releasing their new dub Viz has staked its claim on the series.

Most of the people who actually did want the old dub either gave up on the series or just adjusted to the new dub. The new dub killed much of the old dub market by absorbing existing fans and driving the last remnant of fans away. Vocal Sailor Moon fans rejecting the old dub made sure that it would never see the light of day by convincing people the old dub was nonviable.

Given that the expense of a new dub would be greater than the expense of digging up the old one, if they were going to release the old dub, they would have done that first. Fans who wanted a new dub would still "support the franchise" in hopes of getting a new dub some day, while those who loved the old dub would buy it. If there wasn't enough money generated, then Viz would be have been out less money than if they decided to redub the series and it flopped.

Instead, Viz, convinced by hardcore fans that a redub was the best way to recoup its money, decided to roll the dice with the hope of a greater reward. Given the delay in Stars dub...I have a sneaking suspicion than that this risk failed...and so did any hope of the old dub.

If people want the old dub to be released so badly then go and prove it to Viz with hard numbers. Comments on FB / Twitter / questions at conventions doesn't prove a thing / is not an indicator of actual sales. It might not seem like it but I'm sure it would take at least $30,000 - $50,000 of capital to re-release the old dub on disc not to mention the approvals process that they have to go through and Viz aren't just going to spend that time and money without any reason.

The best you can hope for is to get Viz to run a kickstarter to raise the funds needed to re-release it. If they know they have backing then they're more likely to go and do it.

EDIT - OK here you go -> Sign the Petition

Lets see how many signatures it gets :) ( Not that I'm personally interested in having a copy of the dub but hey ho I'm interested to see if this can get any traction )
As you mentioned, though, they aren't going to do it unless they recoup the losses, and they created a situation where it is impossible to do that and release the old dub. They erased the old dub through their greed, instead of thinking of maximizing profits.

For anyone who actually does want the old dub released...I think it should be clear now why any pro-old dub "hysteria" was understandable in hindsight.
