What you think its better the dub or the sub version of sailor moon crystal ? Why I like both versions, and both set voice actors do a great job.( Naoko chooses both cast s ) I prefer the dub, the dub to me improved the script in certain cases.
Episode 12 as well, it soo much better than the sub version. Usagi actually has lines, and it was more emotional. and the shitenou s death was more tolerable .(It actuary made me ship S X S a little harder) 12 still horrible but its watchable in the dub version.
Having seen the fansubs from Sailor Moon Center that they did for the Japanese Crystal Blu Ray release, from what I've seen of the dub, I still prefer the dub over the sub. I don't think the problems with the Japanese version have much to do with the quality of Toei's translation which certainly doesn't help any. The issue I think people have with the Japanese version is that the script is lazy. The Toei script writers literally just seemed to take Naoko's manga and just copied the exact same script from it. As a big fan of the manga, I appreciate the efforts of fidelity to the source material, but the Viz dub just feels more freer to me. It's still true to the spirit of the original and Naoko's dialog but it doesn't feel like they're just copying straight from Kodonsha's translation either and it makes for a different experience and the dub VAs are just incredible with their performances. I should also point out that the ADR director for the Crystal dub told me over Twitter that her mentor was the ADR director for the Cowboy Bebop dub which is often haled as one of the greatest anime dubs so I think might have something to do with the high quality of the Crystal dub.
Dubs always have and always will make me feel generally uncomfortable. This isn't even an elitism case of "the anime is Japanese so it's the best in it's own language" thing, I've just never been a fan of dubs. TBH the tone that English speakers use when dubbing things tends to change mood alot for me, and as an Australian, hearing such an overexaggerated American accent (which tends to be the case alot of the time) is very jarring for me to watch alot of the time. I'm definitely okay with watching media with American accents, but I feel like with watching voice acted cartoons, the voices will always sound exaggerated/over-dramatic. Thus, I voted sub. The dub voice actors did an amazing job, it's just not my cup of tea.
And that's the whole point of this thread. Which do you prefer, the badly translated subtitles made by Toei, (And as Neon Genesis pointed out, the original Japanese script isn't any better either) or the Dub that did a better translation?
