What official info do we have on this?

We know for sure that :ami: does extremely well and that :usagi: and :minako: do very poorly except for home economics and physical education respectively.

:setsuna: is a physics student and I presume she's good at it since she's the senshi of space and time and s**t ....plus back in 90's a lot less people went to university so she must be good at it since she managed to get accepted in the first place. The question is, does she come across as someone who did well at the other subjects studied in school (assuming she went to school considering she's been guarding the gates of time for a long time)?

:rei: : I think I remember reading somewhere that she's a star student (though presumably not on the same level as Mercury) at her school and that's one of the reasons , along with her looks, why she's so popular there. Is this correct?

:mihiru: : We've seen in one episode that she's very good at art class. To me she comes across like someone who does well or quite well in school but then again it's been shown that she misses a lot of classes in order to focus on her senshi mission....plus she studies the violin so she might be one of those students that sacrifices their grades so they can pursue their vocation.

:haruka: : Same situation as above only with sports (she practices several) instead of a musical instrument. She doesn't come across like someone who does well to me lol.

:hotaru: : Comes across like someone who is capable of doing well but then again her big health problems might impact her ability to study.

:chibiusa: : Did the apple fall far from the tree?

:mako: : Any info on her or does she suffer from character underdevelopment when it comes to this aspect too? EDIT: We know that she's on the rebelious/trouble teenager side of things so that could be an indication that she doesn't do well, right?

Does Usagi do well in home economics? We saw how bad she was at sewing. Her valentines day cookie are apparently terrible.

Evidently she makes good curry.

Outside of their Senshi duties.

Setsuna is highly intelligent.
Rei and Mako are average students. Mako may have had problems with entrance exams but not on the level of Usagi and Minako. I'm pretty sure she does alright in school too.

Chibi-Usa does okay I school.

Hotaru's health issues can be a problem bit she's generally okay in school. Not that she needs to go. She can just sit in her room and generate a ball of energy and watch events unfold.

Haruka and Michiru outclass the Inners in many ways. Since they attended Mugen Tenshin, they must have been hella smart.

Even with Senshi duties they've never been seen to have much of a problem getting their coursework done...Attendance may be a problem though for some.

Aside from Usagi and Minako who just oversleep.

Minako and Usagi are particular cases:
  • Minako is heavily implied (as in, to Japanese audiences it's so obvious there's no need to actually state it so neither Naoko nor Toei did) to have spent many years abroad. The corollary is that she has trouble adapting to the Japanese school system, so different from the European ones, as shown by her being extremely fluent in English while having bad grades in it.
  • Usagi is simply a victim of territory: due Japanese practices she got stuck with a middle and a high school slightly above her level, making her appear stupider than she is.

Elaborate?

Where in the franchise are these things stated/shown (particularly the things you mentioned about Rei, Mako, and Chibiusa)? And what is Mugen Tenshin?

I apologise I did not mean to ad Tenshin. I gotta start paying attention to the posts sometimes. I be on my phone but anyways, I meant Mugen. School that accepts only the smartest most brightest.

I can't remember the exact episodes but

For me, Rei shows her intelligence through her involvement in her private school. Though she is not known to be a wiz, she is the chairwoman of the TA cultural festival in the R season. She directed it, stars in it, sings in it and even writes the lyrics. She is basically Senior to all the girls. Rei is very involved in school. And have "tamed" two crows Phobos and Deimos. She's not incredibly smart but does keep up with her academics.

In that episode, Rei has the ability to write concert-grade musical notation which would take years of study. Rei is not as smart as Ami, but she learns quite well and applies it effectvely. I can see why they paired her and Michiru together in the Nehellinia arc. They are somewhat similar in refinement.

For Mako, the only incidents I remember a few times in either R or S where she got whirlpool eyes while Ami was tutoring her but she ended up passing just fine later. I know she's involved in school. While not book smart, she is smart enough to take care of herself, maintain an apartment on her own and still advance to the next grade in Stars with not too much hassle.

Our other two favorite goofballs (Usagi and Minako just barely skirted by)

I grouped Chibi-Usa because of her maturity. She is able to use the Time Key at a young age. Also throughout the series she is shown to do her schoolwork and actually study, unlike her mama....A few episodes in S and SuperS show this and just like her.

Since when does general intelligence and maturity (and taming crows!) necessarily mean you also do well in school?

Well, they have all excelled in their coursework. It isn't always a factor but it doesn't necessarily disprove it either. I think the Outers provide the perfect example of that especially Michiru.

Maturity is a sign of brain development and a mature person would most likely apply those same principles to all aspects of their life, including school.

It's not really the fact that she "tamed" crows, it's just that she's a 14 year old girl who has a refined and heightened ability to do such and she puts her potential into all the things she does which is why she's exalted at school as a senior.

They all have general intelligence but what sets them apart from Usagi and Minako, moreso Usagi (is they apply their potential in full with no slacking) imo.

The only two Senshi to my knowledge who have really talked about how terrible they are in certain classes and provided examples of them failing in the series are Usagi and Minako.

Mako stated she needed tutoring from Ami but she never stated she failed beyond that.

The anime is where they bothered to state it-that, and Mina says she already knew Alan from before.
The manga, on the other hand, just scatters hints that to Japanese fans makes obvious Minako lived abroad for years due her father's job.
Simply put, in Japan, especially back in the early 90s, you're usually expected to go at the school nearest to your home, at least untilat junior high. And considering Ami, who could have been one of the rare exceptions, still went at Juuban Junior High, that school was quite of high level.

She knew Alan from when she was in London, yes.

I double checked she specifically said she went to London to track down a Dark Kingdom youma six months before the events of episode 42 and that’s where she met Alan. And then Katrina taught her English. She didn’t live abroad for that long and went to Japanese schools for most of her life.

Admittedly I never read past the first arc but no I’m pretty sure it was established she came from a lower working class home.

So your logic is because Ami went to that school then it must have been a high level school? Even though Ami probably went because she lived in the Juuban district? Sure that makes sense?

Nothing even hints that Juuban middle school is a high leveled school.

It is established that Usagi and Minako just aren’t academically inclined and in the case of Usagi, super lazy. Not sure why you think there’s some explanation other than what was given.

In the old anime, in the episode with Ryo she didn't do much better than Usagi in the exam. We don't have much to go on, but from what we can gather, she's not the best student.

Maturity is a sign of brain development and a mature person would most likely apply those same principles to all aspects of their life, including school.
While that is the case, one can also argue that school is a more of test of your memory rather than actual smarts. While generally, those who rank highly in terms of GPA tend to outearn those with lower GPA, very, very rarely are valedictorians and straight A students among the upper echelon of earners; most of the "powerful" people tend to simply be above average in terms of studies. This is in part because those who apply their efforts to school aren't necessarily mature, and many people who are mature don't apply effort in school because it is a waste of time.

Part of me thinks that Chibiusa is GAT because she knows how to simplify fractions and rationalise denominators in preschool. But then she is 300 years old so I don't know what to make of it. I've checked and all her homework is correct. Then again I don't really think Ami printed out the lyrics to Top Gun either so this could just be a joke based on Usagi denouncing how easy Chibi's homework is. But I'd like to think this homework is canon.

She lives in Minato. The fact she lives there pretty much establishes she's at the very least in the upper middle class.

Again, I'm not really good at explaining these things. But there's someone who did it, here.
It is established that Usagi and Minako just aren’t academically inclined and in the case of Usagi, super lazy.
No, it wasn't. Well, Usagi is more than a bit lazy, but she wasn't established as non academically inclined.
As for Minako, she so academically uninclined she actually goes to cram school and doesn't miss a lesson.
Not sure why you think there’s some explanation other than what was given.
Because all too often the explanation that was "given" is actually fanon, or hinges on something that is a part of Japanese culture but not of European or US culture. Let's take Makoto transferring to Juban Junior High:
  • If you ask most fans, they'll tell you she's been expelled from her previous school for fighting. That however comes from Umino repeating a rumor, Makoto states explicitely she moved by herself, partly because she had trouble staying there after a friend of hers snagged her sempai but mostly because she felt driven to change schools. In short, the series makes very clear she transferred because of her fate to be Sailor Jupiter, yet most fans treat Umino's rumor as canon.
  • When Makoto is asked why she's still wearing her old uniform, she replies that the school didn't have any her size. Considering she's an orphan living off her parents' inheritance, that school uniforms have to be bought and aren't cheap (something well known in Japan but not so much in the US and Europe), and some students donate their old uniforms at the school precisely because they're expensive (again, common knowledge in Japan but not outside), it becomes clear she just couldn't afford to buy one and there was no donated uniform her size.

Yeah you’re taking someone’s headcanon (something they admit to being a theory) as absolute fact. That is your problem. The episode quite clearly states she went to London six months prior to the events of episode 42. That is actual text. The author of the article you linked to is trying to reconcile how she learned English so quickly and the fact is the writers at Toei just didn’t think things through.

frequent poor test score but okay

See above

Because all too often the explanation that was "given" is actually fanon
I find this deeply ironic given you’re ignoring the actual text to favor fanon

Minako's tendency to mix up idioms doesn't mean she's "bad" at Japanese; there are lots of people who mix up idioms in their native languages, and it's a trait often applied to characters in comedic works (and Minako is clearly a comedic character, especially in later seasons). It's just shorthand for "this character is kind of ditzy" and in no way suggests that Minako isn't fluent in her primary language, least of all as a result of living abroad / speaking English.

Also this. Minako screwing up proverbs isn’t some indication of not being adept at speaking Japanese (again she was only in London for a short time a few months at most) its just a quirk to indicate she’s kind of a ditz.

Heck there was a joke in one of the early episodes next episode preview (I forget which one by pre-Ami) where Usagi messes up a proverb and Luna has to correct her.

Usagi used to always mess up proverbs I Classic. She made no sense just like most of her hubby's, Mamoru's speeches, though he is still highly intelligent. Stuff he said had question marks all over the place, including from the bad guys.
He's an intelligent idiot. ::tuxspeedmask:
