Regarding PGSM, the show did create a new generation of fans for the franchise back then, who're toddlers or kindergarteners at the time - they may not be huge in numbers but are certainly there.

I like it. In fact I like Supers and Stars to a degree. Just saying it underperformed.

Surprisingly, SuperS was the most expensive season (fans may have rejected it, but the animation is flawless).

As for PGSM, well, not everybody liked it. PGSM is a part of the franchise that --as far as I know-- is only liked by loyal, die-hard fans; quite possibly, the same fans who enjoy watching the musicals.

If this keeps up and the movies flop, I think Naoko should terminate the Sailor Moon rights with Toei Animation and go to a company like Madhouse instead, that company treated the Cardcaptor Sakura franchise with respect!!

I mean, seriously, they had the chance to make this revival of Sailor Moon amazing, and all they're doing is rushing things, and relying on fan nostalgia/merchandise sales, and if we want to speak our minds/explain why we think it's not that good, either we're ignored or harassed by rabid fans, I really don't want it to get to the point to where there's no brand new, original Sailor Moon things/stories or have it seem like Toei Animation is trying to ruin the franchise so big/longtime Sailor Moon fans like us and people in general don't watch it anymore.

I feel the entire magical girl anime franchise has tanked in the last five years too...

I don't think Naoko can terminate her deal with TOEI. As far as I know they own it is a shared product. It would pretty much put the old show in a limbo, all the rights to it will be frozen, similar to Candy Candy situation, all the merch using animation art will have to be pulled out, which won't be of interest to the franchise. Finally, while she gave consent and is being payed royalties, Kodansha are the one requesting the production of Crystal. If they decide a new adaptation won't worth it financially, there will be no production comity.

I fully expect it to be more like a compilation film at this point with a ton of scene cut. The fact they struggled with the script doesn’t give me hope.

I would lobe to see it as well, although the second part of the manga is pretty straightforward. I really like this rearagment and cannot wait to see Rei in the Mirror House. So many cool stuff can be done with mirrors in anime.

The live action series did poorly because it didn't air in primetime like the anime did; it aired at 7:30 on Saturday mornings. People who were fans of the manga and anime probably didn't even know about the new show (it wasn't very heavily promoted from what I remember, and that time slot probably wouldn't be on their radar) or assumed, because of its time slot, that it would be too childish for them. Yet, with story lines like the Usagi/Mamoru/Hina love triangle, Minako's brain tumor, etc, the show might have been too intense for its target audience, who would have been too young probably to even know what Sailor Moon was. It's not that the show was bad that caused it to not be successful so much as it was the poor way it was handled. A different time slot, more promotion, a slightly bigger budget for the CGI/special effects, and casting more experienced actors would have done wonders.

I mean they brought Kazuko Tadano back, despite her being so against working with Toei again in the past, so I doubt after all the effort it probably involved to get her back, they cancel the project. It was never a big thing in USA, but it is a huge thing in Japan, as well as Europe. The manga gets new editions in Japan every 5 years or so, it is very well regarded. And yet, it has been 10 years since the project of a movie was abandoned and there are no news or even a chance of anime material, despite new short stories were published recently. I think once TOEI decide to cancel something it is not persuaded further by them. Even though Rose of Versailles is not their property at all, no other studio stepped up. Anyway, 90s Sailor Moon is a big deal and it involves them. And I don't see a possibility of another studio gets the deal in case TOEI give it a red light. Candy Candy was a very different case, where there were just nobody really owning it, and this kind of situations are very, very rare. But Sailor Moon rights were frozen for a brief period of time a decade ago because of Kodansha and not TOEI. I see the whole thing with the Rose of Versailles (kinda reminds me how Saint Seiya hasn't had any new anime continuations yet, as in the original series, not counting spin-offs but it's still well regarded in Japan and Europe)...all I'm doing is hope we'll get some new soon about when the movie's coming. Hopefully it can be part of the Fathom Events too.

Oh, I see. I'm guessing it was rushed deadlines (similar to Naoko when she was writing her manga) and low pay. At least she still managed to produce some of the best art/animation for the series.

Thank you both! I think my rationale with rearranging the scenes for the first couple of chapters is that they’re too episodic to be adapted without change. Films normally have a climax, and the first half of the manga lacks that. A 3 vs. 3 battle between Mercury, Mars and Jupiter and the Amazon Trio, if animated well, could be an amazing climax for the film’s action to build up to. Rearranging the scenes would help with the screen time.

I didn’t do Part 2 because the second half of the Dream arc is much more like a film.

The fact Toei USA didn’t even bother to add Sailor Moon’s 25th anniversary to the banner (it’s just One Piece. Dragonball Z and Digimon) pretty much confirms there’s no movie being released in 2019 (or possibly ever?).
