Title says it all, how would you handle Crystal.

Here's how I would handle Crystal:
Keep it 100% faithful to the manga, no cuts.
Bring back as much as the 90s cast as possible.

Add in homages to the 90s anime, PGSM, and Seramyu.

Add some filler episodes for character development and expand on things from the manga.

Hire Shoko Nakagawa to cover Moonlight Densetsu for the opening.

Once all 5 main story arcs are finished I'd have Codename Sailor V and the side stories adapted.

Have one consistent animation style for the animators to work with.

Air the show at 7pm on Saturdays in Japan just like the 90s anime.

I totally agree with this. ^_^

Make it 26 episodes per season.

The action will be like that of the R and SuperS films.

I'll go with A-1 Pictures for the animation studio.

One thing I miss is the magical alchemy done the right way. The combo magic in S3 doesn't make any sense except for Chain Wink Sword and Coconut Cyclone combo. Even PGSM did it right.

A-1 is terrible though, they're one of the reasons why Nanoha ViVid & Ace Attorney turned out so bad.

The attacks in Sailor Moon are never really given much explanation either way (and the term "magical alchemy" is never used to describe them, by the way) so there isn't any way of saying that it was "done right" or "done wrong" etc. Why is Wink Chain Sword okay, but Mercury Aqua Mirage isn't?

There are no clearly defined rules about their attacks/how they work, so it really comes across as self-righteous when you say they weren't "done the right way" in Crystal -- which implies they weren't "done the right way" in the manga since they come directly from the manga, and if the original material wasn't "done the right way" then what makes you think you know more than the author about her own fictional creation? :? :? :?

To get back on topic...

If I were in charge of Crystal, I would've given around 26 episodes for each story arc. It would remain extremely close to the manga, expand on things, etc. etc., basically almost everything you guys wrote above.

Likewise, I would have gathered the 90s cast once again. I'm sure even the retired voice actors could have been persuaded to reprise their roles.

I think it'd be interesting to see what Studio Khara would do if they were tasked with animating the show.

That's not fair. Lots of studios have hits and misses. A-1 also did Your Lie in April which looks fantastic...

Let me put it this way. Would you really prefer Toei over A-1?

Let's see now . . .

I'd love for Crystal to follow the manga's plot as closely as possible. I also want each season to have roughly around 20-30 episodes, all of the longer chapters having 2 or 3 episodes to expand on the SilMill, explain manga's plot holes, develop all characters/relationships. I would also like for the voice cast to be combination of 90's anime, Sera Myu, and PGSM. Kazuko Tadano, Masahiro Ando, Ikuko Itou, and Keiko Iwata as character designers. Yasuko Kobayashi as script writer. Junichi Sato and Chiaki Kon as directors.

I've never seen their work on those. I do love their work on Your Lie In April, Grimgar Fantasy and Ash and Ultimate Otaku Teacher. ^_^

The next one on my list is Kyoto Animation. =^_^=

The only reference I have is Free! and I don't even like sports anime.

I would love to see them reanimate :ami: and :mihiru:'s swimming match.

That's an elite team you have there Usagi-Fifth-Doctor.

I'm surprised you also like Mr. Ando's character designs cause I like it too.

I'll be realistic and say that I don't want to send the animation out to a major studio like A-1 or Ufotable (though that could be amazing). I'd rather it go back to a studio that Toei has actually worked with for Crystal - Studio Wish. They handled the first half of episode 21 from the Black Moon arc - the one with the outrageously gorgeous Neo-Queen Serenity scenes. If the films could look that good it'd be amazing. :innocent:

There are a ton of things I would do if I could do my own Sailor Moon adaptation, but if I were in charge of Crystal, I wouldn't do most of them because I'd respect what Crystal was meant to be: a faithful adaptation of the manga. That's what I'd deliver.

I'd assemble a team of the most talented and passionate people I could find and then spend the time and money it would take to do a faithful adaptation of the manga right. I'd follow Naoko's character designs as much as possible (i.e. I'd go with whatever designs she used the most). Wherever there was something unclear, or contradictory, or otherwise problematic, I'd consult with Naoko on how expand upon or address the issue. I wouldn't replicate the 90s anime or PGSM at all. All attacks, all transformations would be original (and 2D!). I'd create beautiful, elaborate stock footage for the attacks, transformations, and speeches to be used when appropriate, and employ real time attacks/transformations the rest of the time. For the sake of pacing or coherence, I might rearrange or merge certain scenes, but I wouldn't omit anything, not even the Uranus/Moon kiss (even though I hate it); rather I'd work with Naoko to expand upon it - delve into Haruka's feelings/motivations, her relationship with Michiru, how Michiru reacts to the kiss, etc. To allow for everything in the manga to be kept and explored thoughtfully but without veering too far off-course or delving into filler territory, I would do each arc in about 16 episodes, 20 at absolute most if the source material warranted it. And I would adapt all the side stories as in-season episodes as much as possible (rather than as specials).

In short, if I were in charge of Crystal, I would have delivered what Crystal promised us: a mature, beautiful, loving, faithful adaptation of an iconic manga.

Another thing I'll add would be the elemental flight tail (from the opening) when the sailors fly. :grouphug: Sadly the concept didn't make it in the show for budget and deadline reasons.

:rei: and :mako:'s flight tail looks dangerous so they'll be replace with leaves and red petals. :ami:'s will be replaced with snowflakes. :setsuna: will have sand. :mihiru: bubbles. :haruka: a golden whirlwind and :hotaru: with purple pink ribbons.

I never really understand why some directors add 3D in the mix.

Honestly, I wouldn't do that many changes.

I keep the plot 100% accurate to the manga, but I would add filler episodes in order for there to be more character development and breathing room. I'd also have done the S3 art style from the start, since I feel that visually works a lot better than the art style Toei used for the first two seasons.

Because it looks 'cool' except for the part where Japanese animation is pretty low-budget so the CGI sticks out like a sore thumb lol.

If I were 100% in charge of Crystal, I would make several changes.

First, I would get TOEI and Naoko Takeuchi completely out of the picture. Please go away, both of you.

Then, I would hire Nanase Ohkawa (from CLAMP) to write the screenplay of each episode. I would give her explicit instructions to create a completely reimagined version of the manga. Oh, and I would also hire Nobutero Yuki as the artistic director.

Finally, under my control, Production I.G. would be in charge of the animation.

if I am in charge of Crystal, I do not have to bribe anyone; I do whatever I want with it.

I don't know why many people want the original voice actors come back. Are new voice actors not good enough?
To be honest, I couldn't bear the voice in the old anime (as well as Kotono's old voice) anymore.

Just have to agree to disagree here. :)

For many of us, the 90s voice actors are iconic and they've all had successful careers. When I read the manga, I hear the voices from the 90s anime (in Japanese of course).

Some of the new voice actors (like Crystal Makoto and Crystal Haruka) are fine, but others (Crystal Ami, Crystal Rei, Crystal Minako) just sound too similar to each other -- at least to my ear.
