I forget SaveOurSailors. A site relished in pro dubbing that their BS had to make Nanko call them off for their “Prince Uranus” rumours because they just couldn’t accept LGBT characters that time.

Kinda funny when you also see threads that claim Sailor Moon made me gay.

You mean Elly? Yeah. There's a reason I refuse to watch Miss Dream's stuff. Her whole group is rotten to the core.[/quote]
No, I'm not talking about Elly, I'm talking about Kerochan no Miko. :kero: :o

This talk of gender reversed stuff causing major drama got me to thinking. Would people freak out much (at least around here, social trends are a whole other question) if someone made an alternate-continuity fanfic/comic/drawings thing, where somehow the Moon kingdom got corrupted instead of the Earth, so that you wind up with a thing where Mamoru and the Shitennou are battling villainous, brainwashed (but sympathetic, as much so as the Shittenou were) versions of the Sailor Senshi? And a disguised Sailor Moon running around bailing Mamoru out of his own foolishness with a well-timed Moon Tiara and goofy speech, then running off, and eventually being the brainwashed Princess Serenity for their final battle? (Mamoru would presumably also wear a Shitennou-type uniform most of the time, and nobody realizes he's the prince at first.)

So basically a distaff Dark Kingdom arc? (possibly with reversed ages, too. And I think Rei/Mars would be the equivalent 'Masato Sanjoin' with her billions of goals for careers, and her prophetic visions/fire readings trying to nudge her in the right direction when she doesn't quite get it, just like the stars seemed to be doing with him.)

I haven't made any of the above, and it would need to be carefully handled if anyone ever did, but it's a subject I've given some thought to because I like both sides of the conflict so much that it's fun for me to think about, but I suspect some people would be offended. :( So just in case I ever get around to using those ideas (or if anyone else wants to), I figure it's worth asking.

Also, without starting some sort of fight (and everybody probably dropping the subject if it starts turning into one): what's wrong about MissDream exactly? I haven't socialized with them at all, but I've looked up their translations for things that I couldn't get in hard copy (and as a second source when the hard copies seemed iffy).
Somebody actually did do a story with the plot you mentioned it can be found here.

That being said while the Sailor Moon fandom can have some bad apples it is pretty tame in comparison to the wild antics of certain other fandoms. Steven Universe for instance is one of the worst. The fandom is loaded with SJWs. They even bullied a girl to attempt suicide just because she drew Rose Quartz thin.

That being said somethings I will never understand about certain Sailor Moon fans. One of the biggest gripes I have is with homophobic fans who typically try to heterosexualize characters. I knew this girl on deviantart who recently rage quitted deviantart who made Haruka and Michiru straight because it offended her religion but kept Rei being Shinto. I am like you realize that Rei's Paganism is equally offensive to your fundamentalist brand of religion as is Haruka and Michiru's homosexuality. She eventually blocked me and as I said before rage quitted because people criticized her homophobia. I mean Sailor Moon isn't really a good fandom for homophobes.

Yeah... that is true. Haruka and Michiru, the Starlights, Fioré, many LGBTQ characters.

Very true I mean the only series that aren't explicitly Yuri or Yaoi that I think can out gay Sailor Moon is Utena and almost any CLAMP series. Being bi honestly seems the norm in those series.

Well, I may give it a try sometime down the road. :) Right now I'm working on a different story that has to do with events in 31st century Crystal Tokyo (a century after the time Chibi-usa returns to) and the fall of the Golden Kingdom, basically extending the timeline at both ends.

Unspecified internet drama stuff
Ah, that sounds pretty unfortunate :( I generally try not to take sides in a conflict without at least checking out both sides, but I will say I've never liked exclusivity or competition of the sort described.

It is also a bit silly when people complain about the LGBT stuff, it's pretty canonically clear what the intent was in the story.

i think in some points the sailor moon fandom is bad
like with the crystal matter making every shot and saying something bad for every little thing XD
In others fandoms their series have bad quality too but they didnt make a fuzz about it
like the tokyo mew mew fandom, the series for tv have bad quality issues were corrected for the dvd
or the madoka fandom i think the tv version of the series have more issues or bad quality than crystal, less details on the backgroud, even bad characters drawings, and the transformations were simple, yeah were corrected in the bluray, more details like better backgrounds, more details in character drawings and even more details in the transformations, yeah in the bluray were still some bad drawings but no one make a fuzz about it, or even remember the bad quality in the tv series XD, like in the sailor moon fandom they kept using the web version of crystal for the hate XD
but is still better than others fandom
like the lady bug fandom
i saw some of the lady bug fandom bullying a girl because she was 15 and have a lady bug backpack ._. thats awful
well at least the sailor moon fandom dosent complain about the fanarts or fanfics, or if someone have something related to sailor moon no matter what age the person have

Creators of Sailor Moon were draining money out of fan pockets for over two decades, accumulating more than enough budgets for top-quality future projects, far superior to originals. Yet in the end quality of new Sailor Moon products went down, not up. It's the pretty much the same as Apple instead of newest iPhone X releasing today a low-quality Chinese replica phone for $20. Nobody would like or want that kind of product from Apple. If fans are investing a lot of money and companies are making profits, it's quite reasonable for fans to expect that quality of products will go up all the time, not down. That's why fans are complaining.

If after two decades of success and huge profits Tokyo Mew Mew or Madoka series will end up with lower quality products than they had in the beginning, I'm sure fans of those shows will complain a lot, and will have a full right for that.

well since the 90s toei didnt give more budget to sailor moon, because it became really popular since season 1 and they drain a lot of money, and in the laters seasons it still have bad quality even in the previous dvd they didnt correct them
now in the realese of the bluray they didnt correct them like in dragon ball, toei redraw the errors
and alot of people still like it XD and didnt say oh dont watch it because it have bad quality xD
at least in crystal they correct them and crystal season 3 have more quality xD
in madoka and tokyo mew mew the issues was corrected in the bluray or dvd version and the fandom didnt metion the tv version bad quality
thats the bad thing with the sailor moon fandom they still use the web ona version for hate matters even when the issues were corrected in the bluray

Honestly in My Whole Experience, both Online and in Real Life, Sailor Moon Fans have been some of the Best Fans I have ever meet! :usagi:

Honestly while I have not been the most present around here, I have been around the net both here and other places to not really see much over the top from Fans at all. It usually just a very mega caring about a franchises they hold in such high regards and that makes sense to debate it vigorously. But in the senses of bad, never really seen much.

Yea their is bad in all fandoms, but I think Sailor Moon Fans are overall great fans and loving fans thanks an Amazing and Loving Franchise unlike any other, SAILOR MOON! :usagi::luna:

I have experience REALLY bad in other fandoms like Comic Books and Dragon Ball, some of the stuff their truly would turn a Sailor Moon's fan head around allot with either how political it gets or how down in the dumpster in sub-language it gets at times, espically recently with Dragon Ball Super.

In the end it is the NET, negatives are its definition these days, so any real negatives in the fandom I take with grains of salt and still love the Fandom as much as I did before the Net!:usagi::group hug:

Not bad, just older and harder to please. Every old franchise has a very similar acting fanbase. When you are older and you are an anime fan you watch contemporary shows, you see the level of animation and wen you compare it to the way your favourite shows reboot is treated you care and you tend to be vocal about it. Kids wouldn't care but most people in the fanbase are at least in their 20s.The initial Crystal airing had some of the worst key frames I have seen in anime and I have watched stuff from the 70s and 80s. Even though the issues ave been addressed to some extended, it was still a big issue for a show with such a big and pretty much international fanbase. Instead of waisting budget on fixing someone's mess they could have the extra time they had after so many delays to make it right the firt time and use that money for some more dynamic animation. No fan base consisted of adults stays happy all the time. Check Star Wars. Some people compare us to Dragon Ballz Super - but it has never been delayed so many times, people got it on time weekly, while we had been through multiple delays to get unfinished product despite a bi-weekly schedule. Now we are waiting for two movies nobody wanted - I'm pretty sure most of us wanted tv season - that are gettng zero development for years and nobody hasn't tried to blow up Toei yet. I think we are saints.

In other other words, Sailor Moon's fandom seems pretty normal to me. A little on the older sisde maybe, since the franchise hasn't seen consistent releases or major revitalization since it's heyday, and the mainstream cultural thing has broken down since then anyway. But I haven't really been THAT active I guess, I don't know.
There are two reasons why it seems normal to you.
  1. You arrived after all of the significant drama happened. Right now, there is no drama, because all of the things that would cause more drama have been resolved. There's been a new dub of the 90's anime and a new translation of the manga, both of which are readily accessible and displaced the old versions. Consequently, aside from the random complaint, anyone like me who preferred the old material has either assimilated or stopped caring that much about Sailor Moon (I fall into the latter category). Right now, there isn't much room for disagreement; that's why it seems peaceful.
  2. You're casually invested into the fandom. All the things you mentioned are for someone who is a passive fan. If what you describe is the extent of your experience, you haven't interacted in depth with a lot of fans aside from this forum. It's one thing if you enjoy the show, enjoy the work of other people who enjoy the show, then walk away. It's another if you were trying to create a fan community, make a new site, or start fan activism (like releasing fan subs) without the approval. If you spent significant time trying to advocate for something and received nothing but negativity, you would have a different opinion, as you could see how awful the fandom could get.

If you had been around a few years ago, you would see how crazy this fandom could be.

That's fair. My exposure to the fan community is all quite recent, I can imagine things were much uglier in the past.

Though I do think that if I'm drawing fanart and writing a really long fanfic that I've been going over for more then a year, that probably makes me a little more obsessive than just a casual fan, I do still have just a much more casual experience with the social nature of the fandom and with my impressions of it.

Regarding the differences in earlier translations such as the DiC dub, I do understand and appreciate how some people like it better. I've occasionally found small things about I like, even though I am preferential to the Japanese subtitled version. But I feel like anyone being too dismissive of others' preferences or interests, towards either official version, is being disrespectful. Different people like different stuff, nothing wrong with that.

The usual drama in most other fandoms and everywhere else.

Steven Universe is one. Then there's the Smash gaming community who bullies their no.1 player.

https://compete.kotaku.com/worlds-best-smash-4-player-is-worn-down-by-haters-and-h-1819677035

From what I heard and read over at Discord the some Smash players don't take a bath too. I'm surprise how hygiene was an issue in big tournaments like EVO.

I actually joined a Momoland Facebook group and its full of juvenile Kpop trolls. Posts are infantile attention whoring comments like "Momoland are stupid" or "Blackpink are sluts."

Also after getting invited to other Discord groups specifically the Sailormoon fighting game community there's no drama at all from what I've seen in over close to a year.

So when thinking about fandoms also consider the silent majority except maybe Steven Universe. :zoid:

Don't forget about the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fandom. Being a casual fan of the show, I've heard there was also plenty of drama going on there.

I think the drama with Sailor Moon was to be expected. The franchise never got the best treatment. VIZ are doing horrible video quality releases, after such a long time of no official Sailor Moon English translation. Crystal was done with very little effort, while delayed multiple time. If people never complain things would have never changed and no problems would have been addressed. At least now SuperS has a better filtering from Viz side, Crystal got a bit better animation and direction. It is ok to criticize something that you love and it gets a somewhat bad handling. True, some fans were more hostile, but there is no fandom without it.

The Steven Universe fandom attacked an artist for drawing Steve’s mom skinny that she attempted suicide cause of all the hate.
