It's too bad the Dreaming Moon special isn't included as an extra on these but I wish we could have gotten the Ikuhara interview on the R movie release. I think that would be more interesting than a lot of English dub-related extras.

Proof that they screwed up and should have waited until after Japan released the R film on the format....then again, they would have cheaped out like with the Crystal commentaries so it was lose-lose anyway.

Maybe they'll do like a boxset re-release of the movies with the Japanese extras on them but I wouldn't count on it as it seems like all the extras on the Viz release have been mainly focused on the English dub.

(thread)

Apparently the voiceless tracks from the DVDs are not included and it seems the R movie has both Stereo & Mono tracks while the others are Stereo-only.

The more I think about it, the more I believe Seen was right and would explain why Viz was able to release R so early (with the JP Mono track) and not the others.

Hoping we see dates for S, Super S and Stars blu-ray boxes in the near future.

Even if they're only up-converts better than the DVD7s.

Now that the Movie Blu-rays are out in Japan, maybe they'll finally let Viz release the S/SuperS films here. Their release for the R movie looked fantastic, and I have no problem supporting the others in that format, but I'm still sticking with DVD for the TV series.

It would be nice if Viz would re-release the R movie along with the S and SuperS movies in a nice Blu Ray boxset like this that included the Japanese cover art instead of that weird American original art they came up with and also included the Ikuhara interview as an extra. I would gladly double dip for the R movie again as I already own four copies of the movie and would gladly buy yet another as the R movie is my favorite of the Sailor Moon films.

Ooo I wonder if Super S and Stars are going to be following at regular intervals.

Makes me wonder if this is a sign the movies are definitely coming next year eg theyve held back the rest of the series blu-ray releases to cash in on the movies ???

(I've also dropped a note to the fanclub to ask if these blu-rays are up converts or negative rescans too)

Are you referring to the Crystal movies? Because the classic movies are already out on BD.

Yes the crystal movies - i already have the JP movies set.

Just mooting the idea that the back end of the classic series blu-ray release has been designed to coincide with the crystal movies.

Thanks so much for the update, NJ! I have yet to rip my Blu-rays (I haven't even taken Classic, R, and the movies out of their plastic wrapping yet) but I definitely intend to continue buying these and I always check this thread for updates. I appreciate it.

A longer wait than usual....for the exact same quality?

FFS, even the 2-year wait between seasons 1 & R on DVD led to something different (though not in a positive way since R-Stars were apparently Interlaced scans).

I still don't believe the original negatives are actually gone, especially after the treatment the movies got. An actual HD remaster requires time and money, something Toei wouldn't want to spend on a 200 episode series.

They're probably sitting somewhere in a storage facility until the end of time. :P

I heard Toei got rid of the original DBZ tapes, and the optical audio they have now is [BLEEP].

Clearly it depends on the show..

Hokuto No Ken (Fist of the North Star) was 152 episodes and had a second remaster done for it's 25th Anniversary DVD Box release in 2008, which they promoted as being a "HD remaster", and while it had it's own issues, it was still an improvement over the original 26 DVD volumes (released in 2003-2004 & again in 2006).

Dragon Ball Z was 291 episodes trimmed down to 167 (or 159 for Japan) for Kai and up until Buu got screwed up with the cropping and green tint, it was a decent film remaster.

That happened with a lot of their old shows, even Hana Yori Dango (Boys Over Flowers), a show from 1996, sounds like 80s-quality mono on DVD.

Ironically I heard they still had the audio tapes for Dragon Ball GT episodes 5-64 (1-4 were mono) but didn't use them for the Dragon Box DVDs.
