Junichi Sato on why Rei was different in the 90's anime (also some griping about Tuxedo Unmasked)

The only change to Rei's character in the anime that I don't like is that she wants to be a singer (among other things), which feels redundant with Minako. But that's a very minor complaint.
I don't think Minako's dream of being an idol was established until sometime in S, iirc. They sort of phased it out of Rei by that time though.

It's interesting how anime!Rei's character was technically established before the original. Personally I love both versions and think it ended up being a good change for the anime. Having two serious girls in the M trio would've been too much for poor Usagi to handle.
I guess this means anime Rei is the *real* original now. :P

But seriously, she adds a great dynamic to the team and in her interactions with Usagi. Her subplot with Mamoru in season 1 was kind of great imo.
I know some people don't like the Usagi/Rei/Mamoru love triangle, but Mamoru himself was barely relevant in it. Normally this sort of thing is used to create animosity between female characters, but it was instead used to bring Usagi and Rei closer together.

True, I never find any problem with it. There is no real triangle.

Usagi hates Mamoru when Rei tried to hook up with him.

This is pretty interesting. I just really wanted to comment because this line made me chuckle irl:

'But later Takeuchi-sensei said "No...Rei is actually an ojou-sama (refined lady)..." and we said "Oops..."'

WHOOPS. :P
Me too LOL this was so funny to me.

Poor Rei. Old anime wasn't ojou-sama enough while Crystal's first season overdid the ojou-sama thing to the point of watering down her manga personality. Thankfully they've struck a much better balance ever since the Black Moon arc.

But we had already established the character that way and we couldn't possibly change it.
So we met with Takeuchi-sensei in order to define how the character would be and we created her personality.

I think Rei is the most different character when comparing the anime to the original story.
I find this tidbit interesting since it confirms Naoko had some involvement in how anime Rei turned out as well.

It is interesting how Miss Naoko helped developed Rei's character and personality for the anime.

All I'm going to say about Tuxedo Unmasked is that the person behind that site blocked me on Twitter and hangs around a lot of the "upper echelon" of the Sailor Moon fandom which has also blocked me, then pitched a fit and reported me (which got me suspended) for blocking them back.

Fans always think they know more than they do, and I'm no exception, but the difference is I say my opinion is my opinion and I will defer when others do have greater knowledge than I do.
sounds nasty. cant say tuxunmasked has eber replied to me

Honestly I think that in terms of adaptations outside of the manga PGSM was probably the most faithful to manga Rei. Also for Seen2 Rei still wanted to be an idol in S and onwards. In fact for the 90s anime I always thought it would be awesome if Minako and Rei would be a duo idol group together.

Tuxedo Unmasked muted me on Twitter after I said my Eternal review may contain spoilers, he was polite about it, but still. It’s a review of a 30 year old manga 1:1 adaptation.. I do like his work and writing but I am not a big fan of people getting too big for their boots.
Seriously ... The manga came out over 20 years ago ... everyone knows the story of the manga including him ... So I don't see why he's yelling because it's spoiler ... He's really pathetic , this guy.
And if he doesn't like it, and he doesn't want to read, he disconnects and that's all, or else he closes his mouth!

I agree about PGSM. It did a great job of encapsulating her being a 'lady' with grace but still the fiery temper/rage from the anime she had. Love PGSM Rei.

I love her in the live action series as well. She's actually my favorite incarnation. I love her calm deposition. Furthermore, I love when she got enraged with her father. Her character arc is quite well-written.

@Jawshx @Guardian Princess Nadia @sailormoongalaxy Hmmh that's strange… I occasionally comment there, too and never had any Beef with him so far. Well, I guess it's each to their own. :ami:
