It's the hammiest melodrama I've ever seen and I absolutely love it. I'm surprised Evil Tuxedo Mask didn't tie anyone to a train track and the reveal of Queen Beryl behind his cape was just masterful. Also, the Guardians slowly realizing their fearless leader is a bit of a ditz was pretty funny. I have no idea why people hated the first season. On the other hand, I tend to enjoy melodrama more than most.

There's an interesting difference with the suicide which did not occur in the original. Maybe the reason the Guardians treat Usagi so gently in Crystal/the manga is because she once committed suicide. Even Rei in the '90's would likely tread carefully around someone if she thought they were that emotionally fragile.

@CrystalBard Well, he didn't sport a Shoestring Moustache for Twirling around either, so that part was pretty much out of question. 
Because deep down some don't like the manga and think the 90's Sailor Moon is the only thing that matters and they wanted a sequel to that version, not a retelling of the manga version. This makes the few faults that appear in Crystal stand out even more to them and easier to criticize and hate.

More likely because they dropped the ball on several episodes, making changes that create problems that were never in the manga... Act 6, Act 10, which made act 11 making no sense, act 12 was terribly butchered, act 13 had a terrible pacing. I love the manga and I was very happy they were following it close with Crystal, but after act 6 I realized they will fail miserably.
I love the 90’s anime but still I didn’t want Crystal to be a sequel to it. Adaptating the manga story was fine with me. It was the poor animation that made me cry, more than screenplay or plot choices. After Mars episode I was so shocked T-T.
I think the realization was not very inspired, but once again it’s the Dark Kingdom arc and it was done in so many format so many times... it’s hard to be original. Weirdly I didn’t think the shitennou thing was so bad (besides the way they die lol).
One thing I had pain with Crystal S1-2 was the way they used shadows, this soft edge brush make all kinda blurry, it wasn’t a good choice IMO. But even in S1, some episodes animation was ok (the maskerade or Serenity’s awakening one, even if style was different from other episodes). I liked S2 better, besides animation I enjoyed seeing a story that was really different from the 90’s anime.

Yeah the first season is a mess because of the poor executed new plots they added into the story. It costed a lot to season 2’s reputation which was for me nearly excellent.

Maybe she was up to try some new things?
Season 2 was better to me. I wished they stuck with that style because I would have liked to see how the other season outer senshi and villains would have looked. While they originally Crystal seasons may have had their ups and downs, when the episode was given the appropriate animation direction it looked stunning and filled with detail and I would have liked to see how the Outers would have looked since the skirts and hair were highlights I know Neptune would be on point. If only the transformations were done in an animated style like their speeches.
