The audience will know it's them! I don't think that will help. I would just leave it anyway. Unless you want to have them call on their twin sisters to fight. :P
True. I have decided to make "Koh" their surname instead of their personal name when it comes to the adaptation version. Now, I just need to come up with some English name for them that have similar meaning as "seiya", "taiki", and "yaten".

Anyone got any ideas?? If you do, please post in my forum so that people who are working on the project will know what's going on.

If you're going to change their names at all, I would suggest changing the entire name and making their surname "Light" or something that means "light" because otherwise you lose the references to san hikari and whanot.

(Of course, I don't know if you really care about losing mythological references, but.)

I care about the references, that's why in the translation version, everything will be kept... but I was going to keep at least their last names in Japanese as did DIC (Raye Hino, etc). Not sure if Light would really work, but when did DIC ever care about losing mythological references... they called the Moon Princess "Princess Serena" and "Prince Darien" instead of Endymion... I guess it all depends on what fits with it... we'll see how it goes.

I think I'm confused about what you're trying to accomplish here. Are you trying to make a fandub, or are you trying to slavishly imitate DiC in every way?

Towards the end of S and all of SuperS, the English dubbers (I know it wasn't DiC at this point but still) decided to keep the Japanese names for most characters. Hotaru kept her name as did most of the other characters. I think you should keep the Japanese names for those characters that are introduced in Stars.

As for Neptune and Uranus. Well I know "cousins" can actually be slang for a lesbian couple so you could easily make a reference to the fact that Serena and her friends just didn't understand what they were talking about. They only mentioned "cousins" in the English dub about twice anyway and those were in episodes that parents would obviously think "Hey! They're GAY!". The best thing to do would be not to tackle the issue at all. Just leave them as a couple.

Starlights are easy. They're just using a transformation pen like power like Serena uses to disguise herself. In fact I think Serena even disguised herself as a man once or twice (or was that Mina in the manga?). The starlights are just doing the same. Just have one of them tak about how they dislike/like the disguises they're using. Easy.

Ummm.... Also attacks. Don't change them too much. The DiC attacks weren't that different from the Japanese attack names. Don't go overboard like some fandubs do. An ideal dubbing would be "Star Serious Lazer Zap!" or something. Original Japanese attack with an extra word on the end. Don't do anything like "Super Supreme Turnaround Feather Blast!" or something. :D

Something else to think about. Notice DiC used the same opening for both first seasons. It might make sense (and work well) to just use the DiC opening again for the Stars Dub. You could use the same ending too.

The fourth DiC DVD has an easter egg that has the opening, closing AND the episode title screens all TEXTLESS!!! I could try rip them for you if you want. Then your episode titles could really look JUST like the DiC ones and you could put your own credits over the DiC closing credits! Let me know if you want them!

What does it matter to you?
Because you're asking for suggestions and if I don't know what you're trying to do then I can't tailor my suggestions accordingly. You said you cared about the references but then said that DiC didn't care about them, so I'm puzzled as to whether you feel the need to imitate DiC in every way with regard to this fandub.

But if you don't want suggestions or feedback and would prefer to just be rude, that's up to you.

I actually found that clean title screen and closing sequence last year when I was ripping episodes to make Music Videos. So I already know about it ^_^. Poor quality I might add. (stupid adv).

I want to use this new opening sequence because there is too much happening since the last few seasons, plus Cloverway made 2 new openings for S and SuperS, using original opening clips and extras from episodes (as I have done also), so I think I'll leave it how I have it, and I might end up using the original DiC title screen as a few people do not like the look of the Stars one or it's music.

Attacks wise... I have been thinking of different types of names, something like "Star Fighter Laser!" etc... but still trying to think of an end word for Maker's attack.

Amara and Michelle will stay as "cousins" and nothing more will be said, I'm sure I can get around a lot of what they say anyway. Even though Cloverway kept all Japanese names, DIC did not, and I'm sure they would have come up with a better name for Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto... but ah well what can you do... I can't even remember half of the character's in S and SuperS because of their Japanese names, so if their name is too long or complicated, I will make it English...

Usagi never turned into a guy with her Hensō Pen in the anime, so it must have been in the manga. Anyways, we can use that Starlights thing and one time have them complain about being in a male body I guess or something? They can be like "Why do we have to disguise ourselves as men anyway?" and then can be explained, that way they can get a broader fan range or something... I was gonna also say 'coz they won't be targeted by the Shadow Galactica, but I remembered that the Anima-Mates targeted men for their Starseeds also :P Ah well... I'll think of something.

Yes I'm 'slavishly' imitating DiC in every way. That's the aim of the project. Now, be constructive, suggestions are welcome but snideness isn't.

Didn't Clowerway use the edited movie credits for S, showing clips from the three movies?

Doesn't really matter anyway (I'm just checking if I remembered it right) - the credits you did look great. Keep up the good work :D

Very true. That was featured on the ones shown on Television, but on the VHS editions I have they use a different opening for S and SuperS which was kinda kool.

I'm not sure what the deal is with the DiC hate, I still love the DiC dub, it was the reason I became a fan of the series in the first place.

DiC's adaptation was the first I saw of Sailor Moon also, and is what got me into it, so I still love the first two seasons very much, but I guess some people think they butchered the original show, but if you never saw the original version beforehand you'd realise DiC did an alright job of making it a cult series :P

This is why I want to stay true with what DiC had accomplished, all other fans can just look forward to the English translation version which should hopefully follow not long after I finish the DiC style version.

It wasn't the reason I became a fan. It was the reason I almost stopped being a fan after I barely started. :P

Seriously, the voice acting was awful, especially in comparison to the originals. And, for an example - the other day I watched part of the dubbed episode where "Rini" first showed up right after watching the original episode, and they took a cute little kiss between Usagi and Mamoru and turned it into "Darien" getting his mouth stuck to "Serena" because she had been eating candy or something. I think it was supposed to be funny, but I was annoyed even the first time I saw that episode a decade ago, and just cringed at the butcher job done to the dialogue. And that was completely typical of the dub - it was like watching a completely different story in some ways.

I hated the obnoxious scene transitions, I hated the weird cuts and changes, I hated the dropped episodes, I hated an awful lot about the show, and I see no reason to want to duplicate such a hack job.

Some might consider that they did an "all right" job if you don't compare it to the original, but, uh, that really doesn't make any sense to me. If I took someone's wedding cake, chopped it in half, rolled it in the grass, then put it back on the plate and said, "It looks great if you don't compare it to the original!" people would think I was insane.

Hrmmm... Serena loves her "sticky caramel bubble gum", and it was used to because the kissing scene lasted too long, and little kids would get bored quickly. I guess that's the best they could come up with.

I was saying I want to imitate DiC in the way they made it so that people of all ages could enjoy the show (especially younger kids in English speaking countries) where television is more strict. I think Andy Heyward may have had kids of his own and wanted them to enjoy the series, but this mean he would have to make it more suitable for younger viewers, especially to get DiC's backing on it so they'd have enough money to do it... Who knows....

The reason I am making an edited version at all is to get that fan-base back again... I know you prefer the original version and that's fine, but the translation version will go ahead soon after the edited is completed, and the only thing changing for that is the language.

I'm not following your logic here. Sailor Moon was made for little kids (nobody start that argument again) and they obviously didn't get "bored quickly". Are you trying to say that American kids have shorter attention spans or something?

Personally, I think that saying kids would get "bored quickly" by a short kissing scene and thus putting some weird pointless dialogue in an effort to "keep them entertained" is rather demeaning to kids and also cheapens the scene. (It was supposed to show a growing relationship, not emphasize the fact that Serena was a whiny ditz.)

1) People of all ages can and do enjoy the show. Just look at the online fanbase.

2) You're not going to be on TV, so why does it matter how "strict" your editing is?

Okay, tell me how making an edited fandub will "get a fanbase back." Seriously. I have no idea how this is supposed to work.

That seemed to have been the case in the anime anyway. It was implied, though not stated outright, that they were actually female, and the male thing was part of her disguise. It did seem to me that they were just using a more advanced and semi-permanent equivalent of the disguise pen.

But surely, in order to emulate the full DiC experience, the attack names should change every week! Ho ho! Or was that Cloverway? Hmm, my sniping would work better if I know which company was which...

You seem to have basically made your mind up about this, but if I could suggest one change to your plan, it would be in this area. Things have moved on a little since the mid-nineties, and we do see the occasional gay character on Cartoon Network and the like now. Specifically, I want to point the character of "Him" from the Powerpuff Girls: it might go over the heads of little kiddies, but he's screamingly gay. On at least one occasion, he has licked the Professor's face. If CN could get away with this - in a show with much the same target audience as Sailor Moon - then I don't see why Amara and Michelle's relationship couldn't be, at the very least, open to question. I think the suggestion that "cousins" was a euphemism and Serena was just too dense to figure it out is an excellent one. Just translate the dialogue as it is: Hell, at no point do they actually say "We're lesbians. We have sex." It's never stated outright; it's all in their behaviour. Kids who aren't old enough to get it will just think "Those two girls are very good friends" and kids who are old enough to get it... will get it, and no harm done. After all, you have to already know what a lesbian is in order to recognise one.

This is your project, and you can treat it how you wish - you don't owe us fans anything. But you have to appreciate why the "cousins" thing in particular is a big deal for some people. The total removal of homosexuality from the series sends the message that gay people are not suitable for children, and I can only assume that's a fairly insulting message to anyone who is gay (and plenty of Sailor Moon fans are). Now, DiC and Cloverway edited the series out of financial concerns: they wanted to put the series on the air, and if it had been left as it was, it would have lost advertising and probably attracted a ton of complaints. Their line of thinking was more likely to have been "this will lose us money" than "this will scar/alienate/confuse children". You don't have to worry about such constraints, so unless you yourself consider implied homosexuality to be an unfit subject for children, you don't have any reason to cut it.

As someone who only discovered the dub after the series, I find myself veering more towards KnM's point of view. I realise a lot of people view the dub with some nostalgia: and I can appreciate that view, but since I wasn't there at the time, I can't pretend to share it. Let me make one thing clear: I am a huge fan of dubs, and I feel that most anime, comedic anime in particular, can be better appreciated with a (high quality) dub than with subtitles: a view that has got me many flamings over the years. I would dearly love to see a complete re-dub of Sailor Moon, but this time in the spirit of the original. Which is why I'm usually frustrated by these fandub projects, which seem intent on emulating the North American version instead. I see that you are planning an uncut dub, and that's great, although it's a little disappointing that it's been given less priority than the edited dub (which would surely be a lot more time consuming).

Please be aware that these are just my personal feelings on the matter; I wish you luck with your project, and it is certainly heartening to see such dedication still exists in the fandom.

Personally I prefer watching the English versions over the Japanese versions because the Japanese versions can take themselves way too seriously sometimes and the English versions are never afraid to laugh at themselves.

I do agree that "editing" them is a bit strange. I see no reason why you should though I'd love to see the DiC transitions that you've done and even some DiC music (which I prefer over a lot of the Japanese music, but that's a different topic).
