I meant to start this yesterday on the old dub’s 25th anniversary in the US but better late than never. My plan is to watch all 159 episodes and 3 movies of the og Canadian dub and give my commentary

A Moon Star is Born

- It’s interesting that the English OP uses footage from the first classic Japanese OP and first R OP but nothing from the second Classic OP that started around episode 27 in the Japanese version

-Serena’s moon mom and earth mom having the same voice actress in this episode. Artistic decision or budget/scheduling thing? You decide! At any rate Queen Serenity will have a different far more appropriate voice actress later

-“Hold it still I wanna feel its tongue”. Wha what? That kid is gonna end up on some kind of list when he’s older

- Who is Serena talking to when she’s talking about a new Sailor V game she saw on tv?

-In the English dub Haruna is apparently the math teacher?

-Who is the Oracle?

- $10 is a much better deal than 30,000 yen I am just saying.

- Whenever this Darien speaks I just think of the Spider-man PS game I used to own as a kid

-Serena’s brooch is called a locket here, I’m only saying that because I think iirc it will be called a few different things down the road

-Even as a kid it always bothered me that Sailor Moon’s outfit was just a sexy Halloween version of her school girl uniform

- The whole “sometimes the monsters are just banished to the Negaverse sometimes they’re vaporized depending on what mood the dubbers were in that day” is fun

“Talk Radio”
- I feel like Passionate Patricia would be a better pen name but eh

-“Are you out of your gourd?” what an oddly specific thing to say in unison, Molly and Melvin.

- Molly already knowing who Darien is (and presumably how Serena learned his name) was an interesting choice

- “Did headquarters send you? You could say that haha I’m evil

-The Moon Tiara just straight bisected Fro, yo.

-Is Tux flying? Leaping really high? Falling with style?

- Today’s Sailor Moon Says used amongst it footage ; Japanese episode 2 (which DiC skipped), the Past Returns, Mirror Mirror on the Wall and I think Ski Bunny Blues? (One of the episodes from the evil Prince Darien arc at least)

I guess Toei didn't make the second Classic and R openings available to the Americas at the time. They never aired in Latin America prior to the 20th anniversary re-release.
We can see footage of them in the first two Italian openings, though. At least the R one.

^ That's quite possible. They seem to have dubbed the episodes out of order (as evidenced by Tracey Moore voicing Serena in Jupiter's debut episode), so maybe they were just working on the Doom Tree arc at the same time they were doing the beginning of Classic, thus they cobbled those openings together? I still think it's a shame they didn't put together a different opening sequence for R.

I guess not. The Mexican dub replaced Usagi's final pose alongside Luna in the first OP with all "scouts" together from the final shot of the first R opening. Then, both R and S had the first R opening. The same happened in the Brazilian dub, for obvious reasons.
I know Mexico dubbed the first 65 episodes at once, while Brazil only did the first 46. Brazil was offered R and S in the same package excluding episode 89, but the TV station wasn't interested and the remainder of the series was only broadcasted 4 years later (2000) with a completely new dub on our local Cartoon Network. The airing concluded in 2002, with Stars.

"Slim City"

-I've already stated multiple times how much I think the DiC version of this episode is a vast improvement over the Japanese version, so I won't dwell on it.

- Just fyi to my knowledge the tall girl with brown hair is the only non-Molly friend of Serena's to get a name in the actual tv series dub. "Brandy" any other name afaik comes from the Mixx novelizations or random wikia.

-Operation Steal Energy from Weight Loss was apparently Beryl's idea in the dub.

-Every gym I've ever gone too the fitness instructors just wore shorts and a tight form fitting shirt with the gym's logo, they typically don't wear aerobics outfits.

-Andrew's taking Serena out for a big lunch, but now that I think about it wouldn't it be dinner time? The girls went after school to the gym?

"So you Wanna be a Superstar?"
- For some reason DiC used the pre-episode preview footage from the weight loss episode again. Oops?

-I guess Jedite and Queen Beryl are telepathically linked? He says he must tell Queen Beryl and then immediately it cuts to her thinking how they'll use Saffron to gather energy for the Negaforce?

-Why would Molly want Melvin not to tell anyone they're partners? Everyone would find out anyways at the auditions?

-Sailor Moon's transformation now comes with a fresh manicure

-DiC/Optimum turned the Glass themed monster into an Ice themed monster. Considering the show will recycle the Cinderella inspired monster who can trap people in glass concept two seasons later I don't think it was a bad idea.

-"Moon Tiara Vaporize!"

-"I banish you to the Negaverse!" But you just vaporized her? I guess the idea is that the monster's spirit is residing in the Negaverse?
