We all know how Sailor Moon is heavily influenced by Greco-Roman mythology. We also know that those Greek and Roman myths exist in the world of Sailor Moon because the characters reference them.

In Act 10 of the manga, when we're first introduced to Queen Serenity, she says:

わたしは 地球でよぶところの 月の女神セレーネの化身 シルバー・ミレニアムの前女王 クイーン・セレ二ティ
"I am the incarnation of the goddess of the moon known on Earth as Selene. The last queen of Silver Millennium, Queen Serenity."

Now, as we all know, the series' central romance between Princess Serenity (Usagi) and Prince Endymion (Mamoru) is based on the Greek myth of Selene and Endymion. Assuming this myth exists in the world of the series (which is a reasonable assumption), you might conclude that that myth is just some sort of vestigial memory of the Prince and Princess's doomed historical romance.

But that would make Princess Serenity the incarnation of Selene, not Queen Serenity. Yet it is the Queen who establishes herself as the moon goddess.

Does that mean Queen Serenity was also carrying on with Prince Endymion? Both the live action series and the recent manga novelizations explicitly depict the Queen as being Princess Serenity's exact twin, so perhaps it was an innocent mistake on Endymion's part - but certainly not on the Queen's. And honestly, I am living for the trashy soap opera drama of the idea that the Queen was having an affair with her daughter's forbidden boyfriend. (And yet that somehow still wouldn't be the unhealthiest relationship in the series.)

What do you guys think?

Not to rain on your fun, but I would think it's more one of those things where after thousands of years the exact details got a bit murky.
Especially considering that for a Japanese person -- Takeuchi in this example -- the pronunciation of Serenity is similar to Selene more so than for an English reader, so in that point of view having the legend in universe slightly mixing the name up is even easier.

But they're both called Serenity? And it doesn't matter whether or not the exact details have gotten murky after thousands of years since Queen Serenity herself is the one identifying as Selene. There was no reason for her to do so. (Of course, the generous explanation is that she was called Selene during her lifetime and is unfamiliar with the "modern" myths regarding Selene.)

It's possible that the image of Selene came from both characters, it's common.

Then she should say they're both incarnations of Selene, or make a quip about how those funny little Greeks got the story confused.

Well all of the members of the Moon Matriarchy were based on Selene. Queen Serenity was just the incarnation of the Goddess and really I wish that her name was Queen Selene because I thought it would be a good way to separate her and give her a unique name from her daughter. None the less obviously Endymion would not have been confused by Queen Serenity nor would have ever romanced her as it was Princess Serenity who broke the taboo and visited Earth. However interesting fact is that in Greek Mythology Selene like most of the Gods and Goddesses was not at all monogamous. She had more lovers then just Endymion. Endymion was just her most famous lover. Her other famous lovers were Zeus himself, Helios and Pan the God of the Wilds. Which we can see that the main and arguably canon lovers of two of the members of the Moon Matriarchy. Namely Princess Serenity's love interest of Endymion and Princess Small Lady Serenity's love interest of Helios were named after two lovers of Selene. So I suppose if Queen Serenity had a lover or lovers they would have most likely be based on or be Zeus and/or Pan.

It's the transitive property of matrilineality! :P In the same way Usagi being Sailor Moon made her daughter Chibiusa Sailor Moon too, Princess Serenity being the Queen's daughter made her a moon goddess as well. If you look at it that way, the myth still works!
