I don't know where this would fit in discussion, but here's a perfect rebuttal to Nostalgia Critic's godawful, piece of [BLEEP] review:
Any thoughts? I agree entirely with the rebuttal, and for me, when I used to be a stupid, young Nostalgia Critic fan when I first saw this (I was only like 16-17), not gonna lie, his shitty "rant"/jokes all lost me and I forgot most of what he said, looking at it now, it's not only the first episode from his show I found as not funny, but it's where he jumped the shark and is not only one of his worst reviews but I daresay it is objectively the worst Sailor Moon review to ever exist, and I've seen other reviews by people who didn't care about the show or who came off like they didn't watch/pay attention to it that were less tasteless and offensive. #ChangetheChannel

To anyone watching right now. Skip to 3 minutes and 40 seconds. It starts off discussing Channel Awesome's annoying history which feels like 10 minutes.
I think it was intended for a bit of a refresher history or to let newcomers know what was going on last year.

I pretty much just expect this sort of thing from people already. Channels just churn out content about stuff they only have surface knowledge about because their viewers demand it and they're too lazy to do very much research. I remember really liking his stuff back then but that was in an era when there wasn't that much content online. I watch that stuff now and I am embarrassed that I ever thought it was funny.

His only good review was The Room but other than that, who cares about Doug and his remaining goons on that site?

I actually like he's Matrix review especially the 'Matrix Logic' scene.

Nobody anymore. My favorite from his at the time was probably his Felix the Cat one, but even that didn't age well.
They still have over 1 million subscribers. As for views they're normally at 30,000-50,000K. Most so far in the last 2 months was 800,000 views.

As Lisa Simpson would say, you'll never go broke appealing to the lowest common denominator, I'm willing to bet that those viewers and subs who are still clinging on to him are just uneducated idiots who think he's "so talented" when he's about as talented as Chris Chan.

I'm sorry, but I am disappointed by the continued hate over a review.

I've never been a fan of the Nostalgia Crtitic and nearly every big name anywhere is corrupt and needs to be taken down a peg. I am almost never in favor of the most powerful voice, but this time...I think Sailor Moon fans over-reacted and still are over-reacting.

He gave his opinion on the series and made humor about it based on what? Oh, nostalgia. There is no reason for him to research anything; researching would be disingenuous if he's reviewing the media in part about how it made him feel in the past and compare it to how it made him feel years later.

He's looking at Sailor Moon from a non-fan perspective. The way he sees Sailor Moon is the way a lot of people see Sailor Moon to this day. If you like the show, what does it matter what anyone else thinks about it?

That this person starts out a rebuttal with a plea for Patreon support indicates they are no different from the Nostalgia Critic in doing this for money.

That's no excuse for the lack of research (he watched all of Avatar: The Last Airbender in preparation to review the shitty M. Night Shymalan film so why didn't he do it here?), the disgusting, sexist jokes he made (I'm a guy who grew up watching Sailor Moon and I only now just noticed and am offended by the horrible "men can't control their urges HUR HUR HUR" joke), the reason people disliked his review is because he made highly incorrect assumptions, didn't do any research, didn't distinguish between the Japanese and American versions and gave people who probably were newcomers the wrong impression of the show. :|

It's not an excuse. It's an explanation.

There is absolutely no reason why he has to watch every last piece of Sailor Moon media and become knowledgeable about Sailor Moon to review it on the basis of comparing how he remembered it in the past compared to how him revisiting the series. He's not giving anyone the wrong impression of the show as this is Sailor Moon filtered through his experience.

Furthermore, it's clear that the Nostalgia Critic is a character, so why is anyone expecting his review to be a straight take on the material? It's supposed to be looking at the media with biased eyes, not fresh ones.

Any impression formed by an ignorant viewer is the correct one, because his video was never meant to truly inform but to reflect.

It's a terrible review but he's audience that time came for the humor and entertainment he provided.

...... and gave people who probably were newcomers the wrong impression of the show. :|
Believe it or not it gave exposure to young new fans that time. I actually shared that link you provided in a :usagi: Gaming Discord server.

You're entitled to dislike them. As for me I haven't really taken the time to invest in Channel Awesome since I've only watched maybe 5 or 7 videos of them in total. And my knowledge of them came from Youtubers describing that controversial document a list of petty complaints. And yeah its pretty petty.

Also that anti-Nostalgia Critic video was funny too. In the end their group has something to offer.

It's not that he had to watch 200+ episodes to have an opinion but I think the response video had a point in the fact that it was more sexist and racist than other videos as well as somewhat creepy and lazy. It did come off as if he totally didn't pay attention to or misunderstood what he did see. Considering he makes his living off of reviews you would expect him to be a little more informed than the average person even if he is just another pseudo comedian internet hack he still claims to be a critic. Plenty of fans make fun of aspects of the show and people can laugh at the flaws because they are based in reality but if humor was his main priority he maybe should not have done the review because there is no humor in it for fans if he is just going to misrepresent the show and the review wouldn't be for non fans because non fans just don't care.

I'm one of them. When I first saw that review I felt like he was being way to harsh on something that looked like harmless fun and wanted to find out if the show really was as bad, repetitive and creepy as he said. Obviously I disagreed with him because Sailor Moon soon became one of my favorite TV shows of all time.

If it wasn't for that review, I wouldn't be a Sailor Moon fan.

It’s not so much that he didn’t know much about the series it’s the gross sexism and misogyny being treated as comedy/feigned feminism.

Haha Sailor Moon’s a slut because she wears a short skirt...over a leotard. Ballerinas are also sluts apparently..I guess?

“The transformation is so obviously fan service because it gave me a boner”

And let’s not forget the racist “I’m Japanese failure is everything” joke or the bisexual erasure Sailor Says parody or the sexist 100 percent earnest “girls don’t watch Star Wars”’bit

It’s fine that he thinks the show is stupid. It’s fine that he clearly didn’t watch past episode 3 or 4 (given how he treats Jedite as a far more prominent character than he actually is) I agree with your point that it’s stupid for people to expect him to come from the review as a fan especially when his schtick is/was mocking schlock from the 80s and 90s (seriously I never understood why his fans always requested he review things they liked when his thing was being obnoxiously nitpicky?) The problem is his review goes beyond “This show I never really watched is dumb” and into gross sexist bs.

And let’s be fair it’s not like the Sailor Moon fandom itself at large doesn’t have this creepy borderline obsession with sexualizing middle school aged cartoon characters.

My only problems with the rebuttal are that the guy making it fails to recognize that while Naoko Takeuchi created the MANGA, she did not work on the ANIME, which was overwhelmingly written, animated, and directed by men, and that the characters very much are sexualized (not to the extent that NC seems to think, but still, let's not act like those bathtub scenes, cleavage-flashing monsters, and close-ups of Jupiter's curves in her transformation sequence were all harmless and necessary to the story).

I don't remember that link being posted, but looks like I'll have to eat my words, that's good to hear at least new fans of the show were made. And not gonna lie, sometimes when I saw some of Bennett the Sage's anime reviews, I still ended up checking some out and becoming fans (Dragon Half, the subbed version of Venus Wars).

Usually it was the monsters that tended to be worse in terms of sexualization though, but even Naoko's designs were questionable like with the Amazoness Quartet, and not gonna lie, I was thinking "did we need a close-up shot of Jupiter??" when I first saw it. But the Star Power, Planet Power, Crystal Power and the majority of Sailor Moon's transformations were animated by Kazuko Tadano and Ikuko Ito, who were women.

And crazily enough, Sailor Moon almost had a fan submitted attack idea called "Sailor Finale", which according to the description "Using attacks drains away their transformation energy, so the more they attack their costumes slowly start to fade away. When they use their energy for a super powerful attack…" but Tadano wouldn't allow it as she said while the idea was interesting it would turn off the audience/little children, good judgement call. There even was this sample of an interview she had in Animage where she expressed her beliefs on how men and women would both draw the female gender, but I don't know if it would be relevant or not. Both are available on tuxedounmasked.com though.

So you poisoned the well against the well against the Nostalgia Critic and anything that was "inaccurate" in order to gain a fan. I'd rather there be no new fans in that case.

It's not that he had to watch 200+ episodes to have an opinion but I think the response video had a point in the fact that it was more sexist and racist than other videos as well as somewhat creepy and lazy. It did come off as if he totally didn't pay attention to or misunderstood what he did see. The Nostalgia Critic is playing a character.

For his reviews, he is putting up a persona, a persona that is intentionally problematic and somewhat exaggerated. This character can be less than ideal, but that's part of the point.

There was a humor in it...for his audience and people who remember Sailor Moon as this nebulous thing and want to laugh at it. Why is it a problem for people to laugh at the correct version of show? It's a cheesy kids show that is terribly written, inconsistently animated, and formulaic. For many people, the only draw was the pretty girls who got naked and transformed into what are perceived as skimpy outfits.

And I don't see where his review was racist. Upon re-watching his actual review, he even praised the opening for being catchy.

It’s not so much that he didn’t know much about the series it’s the gross sexism and misogyny being treated as comedy/feigned feminism.

Haha Sailor Moon’s a slut because she wears a short skirt...over a leotard. Ballerinas are also sluts apparently..I guess?
Do ballerinas also wear high heels with exposed legs without tights? I'm not saying those things are inherently "slutty." I am saying I can easily see that through the male gaze those outfits can be seen as immodest, and again, it is in part this very misogynist audience the series panders to. There are problems at looking at Sailor Moon through a feminist lens and to pretend that guys didn't look at the show for "pervy" reasons is also disingenuous.

The transformation is so obviously fan service because it gave me a boner”
And...how else would you define fan service? If it makes me excited, it's fan service.

And let’s not forget the racist “I’m Japanese failure is everything” joke or the bisexual erasure Sailor Says parody or the sexist 100 percent earnest “girls don’t watch Star Wars”’bit
That was a knock on Japanese culture and how Sailor Moon, like most other anime, places a very high value on class achievement to the point of absurdity. It's no more racist than talking about British stiff-upper lips or French surrendering.

Funny, the "girls don't watch Star Wars" bit was in direct response to the "obvious Americanizations" and was a complaint that people who hate the old dub repeat endlessly. Of course that the people who complain ""obvious Americanizations" are themselves being sexist and racist when complaining about the changes, but the fandom won't go after them because..."authenticity" but when the Nostalia Critic points out this same issue, he's sexist.

This isn't directed at you personally, but for those who call out the Nostalgia Critic for using their own arguments against the show, either acknowledge the original criticism was problematic and rescind it or lay off the Nostalgia Critic for saying the same thing you've been saying for years.

To me, it seems he's more playing a sexist character and just peddling fanboy humor.

And let’s be fair it’s not like the Sailor Moon fandom itself at large doesn’t have this creepy borderline obsession with sexualizing middle school aged cartoon characters.
Indeed, and whether intentional or not, he took the complaints of "true fans" and showed how obnoxious and petty they are. And of course "true fans" don't like it, because it would force them to admit that all of the racism, sexism, and other problematic attitudes are their own projected onto their designated targets.

I don't remember that link being posted, but looks like I'll have to eat my words, that's good to hear at least new fans of the show were made.
New fans being made based on fan re-interpretation of the work and not based on the actual work itself.

That's the root issue which I have a problem with. There is still this pressure to provide this unified, "true" version of Sailor Moon for people to like and only a narrow set of opinions that may be held.

Why can't people like or dislike the show based on ignorance, surface knowledge, or even the "wrong" information, version, whatever? Why can't people watch the show, interpret it how they want, and like or dislike it? Why is there this need to "correct" anyone who doesn't see Sailor Moon the way they see it?

I remember when there were anti-Sailor Moon pages on the Internet, one of the most notable ones from a person who went by the handle "Toad Kinopio." He formed his opinions based on misinformation, but I never had a problem with him making an anti-Sailor Moon page.

It was okay for him to hate Sailor Moon based on bad reasons.

The same is true of the Nostalgia Critic or anyone else. Sailor Moon is just a show.
