There are a lot of factors at work that are responsible for why the Viz dub sounds (IMO) so awful: bad directing, bad sound mixing, badly written dialog, and miscast or mis-directed voices (i.e. clearly casting and directing actors in the 90s redub with Crystal in mind. Ben's Umino works fine in Crystal for instance, but it doesn't suit 90's Umino at all).

Amanda and Cristina are great actors capable of delivering great performances and they're trying their best, but everything about the Viz dub is thwarting them. With different directors and better dialog, they could shine as Jupiter and Mars, but.... I'm certain Susan and Katie would jump at the chance to reprise their roles, and I'd rather have them in a Lego SM movie. Same goes for Sandy. She's great as Chibiusa, but I'd rather get Stephanie Beard back.

Debbie Derryberry is terribly miscast as Diana. She should be playing Luna, instead of Michelle Ruff, whom I suspect of being an automated voice engine because surely no real person could be that consistently lifeless sounding.

Stephanie Sheh is a bad voice actress. Her pitch is constantly changing and she's not terribly good at emoting. I'd take Linda over her any day. (I'd want Tracey back in the role. Terri can voice Queen Serenity and Linda can play Mama Ikuko or maybe a villain.)

Robbie, Johnny, and most of the supporting cast aren't bad...they're just bland. They leave zero impression so they could all be recast and either it would be an improvement or no one would even notice.

Anyway... Maybe it's time to try and get #LegoSailorMoonMovie trending?

Drawing characters made of plastic cubes with limited stiff animations would be yet cheaper and yet lazier effort than drawing Crystal. Toei and Naoko sure would love that idea. Maybe they even would throw a few hundred bucks of investments into it.
It'd be even easier for animation quality control than S3 of Crystal, too.

I noticed that too, that the Viz talent seemed to be cast more with the Crystal dub in mind (maybe I should try Crystals dub out?) Cristina Vee's performance works for Manga/Crystal Rei who is more cold and sophisticated. But not 90s anime Rei of the fiery temper.

Amanda and Cristina are great actors capable of delivering great performances and they're trying their best, but everything about the Viz dub is thwarting them.
Amanda is the only one of the main 5 who I think is doing a stand up job. Cristina is either miscast or misdirected for 90s Rei. I mean if I was going to rank them 1. Amanda Cee Miller (good casting, mostly going acting) 2. Cherami Leigh (good enough voice, her acting is meh ish)) 3. Cristina Vee (good voice but misdirected) 4. Stephanie Sheh (good voice but bad delivery) 5. Kate Higgins (horrible casting sounds waaay too generic forgettable performance)

Sandy's Chibi usa is okay her Black Lady is horrible and I don't know why Viz didnt use a different actress for the role like Dic/Viz.

instead of Michelle Ruff, whom I suspect of being an automated voice engine because surely no real person could be that consistently lifeless sounding.
I want to know who thought "Hey, you know what's a good idea? If the two most significant supporting character's in Usagi's life in the early episodes should sound exactly the same! And then let's have the first Sailor Guardian they discover ALSO sound just Naru and Luna.

People can hate on British Nanny Luna, NEW YORKA Mowwy, and British posh Amy all they want but at least they were all distinctive sounding characters whose voices fit the characters (okay Molly from NEWYORK wasn't necessarily fitting but at least she stood out)

Stephanie Sheh is a bad voice actress. Her pitch is constantly changing and she's not terribly good at emoting. I'd take Linda over her any day.
I really want to see Linda doing something with competent voice directing. Her voice around the middlish of S wasn't bad and she was a decent enough actress. You can only do so much when your direction is "Sound like this other girl"

Sheh is like opposite of Terri and Linda. Her voice is more fitting for Usagi but her acting rather it be bad directing/lack of talent or both leaves a lot to be desired.

And then you have Moore, easily the best actress of the four and her voice suits Usagi. So yeaaah there's really nothing the others had going for them that Moore didn't do better. Even if I did love some of Terri Hawkes line deliveries.

(I'd want Tracey back in the role. Terri can voice Queen Serenity and Linda can play Mama Ikuko or maybe a villain.)
Ooh I definitely want a theoretical Lego Sailor Moon to have all 3 Serenas. Perhaps Moore as Usagi/Sailor Moon. Linda as Princess Serenity and Terri as Neo Queen Serenity? Or what you said :)

Wow, this is surreal. Like I'm in a time warp. I remember in the years before I started watching Sailor Moon all the vitriol about the original dub I'd see. Many many years later, it's like I'm watching it all unfold again with the newer dub because of an offhand comment I made.

On one hand, unlike in those early years, this time I HAVE watched some of the Viz dubbed episodes and never really noticed anything TOO wrong. I even have the Viz dub of the R movie on digital download. On the other, I probably need to watch a lot more, and only the first two seasons are available for free via Yahoo. I guess I'm too busy blowing through some other anime (Fairy Tail, Urusei Yatsura) to spend much effort rewatching the new version of Sailor Moon.

I'm also reminded of the stink raised about the Nelvana dub of Card Captor Sakura way back when. I had seen some of that, but only years later after seeing the original did I realize critics were right about the voices, and just trying to turn CCS into something it's not.

At least plenty seem to like the Lego Sailor Moon idea. Any chance we could just focus on that for a while? Pretty please?

2D is still strong it just who makes it. For example, the majority of Cartoon Networks shows are 2D. I wonder Star vs the forces of evil is something Sailor Moon. which is based on Sailor Moon. What would you like to be changed in the first arc?
