TOEI is giving 250.000 limited copies of freebie (a bandai cardass) for earliest movies goers (source:劇場版「美少女戦士セーラームーンEternal」《後編》の予告編映像とポスタービジュアル解禁! さらに入場者プレゼントの配布が決定!:美少女戦士セーラームーン 25周年プロジェクト公式サイト )(and this type of freebie usally run out in 1 week) so they must expect 250.000 people to watch the movie in a week

Dont start with the "few theatres" excuse again. It can't even fullfill 30% of the seats in those "few theatres". It would have been a bigger loss if more theatres had been available
Why are you guys speaking about this in the main thread? There is the box ofice thread.

It reminds me of French people in my country who idolize Kazé France for DVD boxes even if the boxes had big manufacturing problems ... They refused to see the reality of the bad treatment.
Some fans when they see the word "Sailor moon" displayed somewhere they lose their minds.
Look, I agree on this part. I mean people are still saying VIZ blu rays/dvds for s 1-3 look perfectly ok, even though we have all seen how this shows look on mere dvd in Japan and Europe and it is obvious they completely butchered it. But saying you should stop loving something because it underpeferorms... I mean, who cares? Crystal has never been top of the top and some people love it. Why can't you just come into terms that it is not for you, go watch your 90s shows, read fanfics or whatever and let people that like it like it?

Who is letting not enjoy those who love Crystal? I mean... I cant stop seeing words no one has ever spoken here. If you love Crystal, go ahead and do it. No one is saying you can't enjoy Crystal or whatever. The ones who are not letting other's have their opinion are the ones that come to you calling you hater because you are analising box office numbers. Ok... if It was for them it would be prohibited to analise anything related to Sailor Moon so you can't take any negative result of it. This is called authoritarianism.

I never really liked Crystal fully but I still can enjoy some aspects of it and I won't stop doing so. The same way I enjoy lots of things of the 90's anime and some others I dont.

This is the problem of the hardcore fanbase... playing the victim and fighting like an angry dog attacking whenever they see something about it is negative and they dont want to accept it. All this for analising BOX OFFICE NUMBERS purely. Who did talk about the quality of the movies? Nobody... From commenting stadistics numbers to say that then you hate Crystal and we are not letting others enjoy the product. Like... come on.

If tomorrow they put 100.000 manga copies on sale in Japan and only 10 are sold how would they defend it?

You got your thread, didn't you? Go, write on there. But it is pointless. Toei are getting money for it somewhere. Crystal continued despite low ratings, dvd sells etc. There is a reason for it to continue. You won't discover the hot water by saying it doesn't dominate the box office.

Im not discussing the box office here anymore or at least is not what Im talking on my messages with you right?
Yes, we already said that days ago ( and if you want to check my Instagram made lots of stories saying this ): Toei will make money of the movies from other ways ( International deals, merchandise, etc ) and of course Crystal will continue and we will have Stars arc even tough the box office in japan is not amazing. When did I say the opposite? Show me please... You talk things no one said here as like we did say it.

I dont want to discover anything, Im just stating stadistic facts that has happened like it or not. You are the one who thinks we are trying to discover anything lol

I’m reposting this as I think it got List in the main Topic.

The good thing of this is that in this case the international market can actually help. We have a previous referent in this case: Dragon Ball.

When Kai was produced it was a moderate success in Japan, however in that first run it didn’t pull amazing numbers as One Piece or Naruto as those tv shows took the crown of shonen at that point.

However when it was shown overseas it was a major success as the competition was null (One piece is not popular in Latin America for example) so they decided to produce the Final chapters ONLY FOR international markets. In the end they decided to show it everywhere and make a film and the rest is history.

However this sets a precedent, if the film turns out to be popular in the rest of the world, they might decide to produce the final series as merchandise and licensing deals are really important ( for example in Mexico clothing is still produced for both males and females,, and the tv show is broadcasted in cable tv)

Also, some of you mentioned the Super S movie and as an example but actually it
was unsuccessful!

According to this article at Tuxedo Unmasked (I really love this blog you should read everything there!!) th movie made half of what R made.

Why Was There No Sailor Stars Movie?

The article analyzes why there wasn’t a Stars movie citing this as a main reason, also linking it to the declining ratings the tv show had.

By the way I think we haven’t discussed another thing that might influence the low box office. Isn’t January the dump month for movies?

They might be contractually obligated but they are just releasing it quickly to be able to stream and sell it online?

what do you think?

This is what will happen. The foreigner + goodies will once again save the license.

It opened at 9th... I hope Toei doesn’t do a Dragon Ball Kai and give up on the series on the last arc like Toei did with the Buu arc in Japan.

I think Eternal’s success now lies in how well it does overseas. I’m gonna go watch it again this week despite of the COVID situation to support it.
Ninth place, I find it good but at the same time not terrible (even if not much theaters).
We must see for next Tuesday, if the film progresses or regresses.

Even for a time of Covid-19, I find that the Japanese have not responded present.

However, they go to work, to restaurants, to shop for food, to shops ...

At least that proves that Sailor Moon doesn't have the wind in Japan, I'm talking about the anime.

It's so sad and embarrassing that a Sailor Moon movie opened at #9 while a Doremi one opened at #4. I'm comparing the two because both are Toei productions based on retro magical girl series that were filled with nostalgia, aimed at women, and released in theaters in the middle of a pandemic. I attribute Eternal opening much lower than Doremi to two main factors: 1) Doremi's reputation wasn't tarnished by a poorly-made adaptation like what happened to Sailor Moon with Crystal. 2) Doremi had higher production values. I don't know if it it had a bigger budget, but the animation, and visuals in general, looked better and more consistent.

The Japanese who abandoned Sailor Moon Crystal, I don't think they came back. They are not so sheepish, when they make a decision, they stick to it.
There is a reason why Sailor Moon Crystal fell like this between season 2 and 3, in physical sales, and in the interest of the Japanese.

But hey, anyway, Toei didn't want a hit for this movie, otherwise it would have been in many theaters and not 100.
Because when we see that other films - Covid period, even Japanese films (I'm not talking about animation), but real films with actors are released in many more theaters. There is a problem with the Sailor Moon community.

Well let be honest, place 9 for a long awaited movie (at least for us) with all the promo they did (at least that was my feeling but maybe it’s just us because we only see here posters, promo etc...) is disappointing. Specially right now when the movie concurrents are not really present in theaters... ok it’s not a catastrophe but ... hmm nothing to be happy about! what a shitty period anyway with Covid the last few days exploding in Japan etc... at least they have some excuses...I’m sure it will be out of the TOP10 next week with these numbers.

Still I think that the target of these movies remain international with the Netflix deal. Hopefully it will be a HUGE SUCCESS INTERNATIONALLY and Netflix will order a Star season (or two extra movies ! At least!) :luna:

PS : and from what I read it’s has nothing to do with the quality of the movie which is good so... it’s a good news at least.

I think one of the issues is that the movie is a sequel to Crystal, not a standalone story. You’d have to be familiar and caught up with the characters. Even the 90s movies were more accessible in that anyone could jump in, and that was at the height of SM’s popularity.

Here, they made no attempt to grab a new audience. It just jumps right into the story. Add in that it’s a 2 parter, and that’s more of a commitment than just going to see a popcorn movie.

But again, Crystal / Eternal wasn’t aimed at kids, like Doremi. It wasn’t aimed at a shonen audience either. It was created with adult women in mind, and that’s a smaller demographic for anime movies in Japan. So I’m pretty sure Toei knew exactly what to expect. Plus, they’re making more off of the movie sales than if they’d just put it out on nico & blu Ray again. Let’s face it, the fans who went to see it are probably gonna shell out the cash for the dvds too.

Well, yes for sure regarding the movie in theaters and no as well regarding Netflix.
They clearly want to attract new target with Netflix. For me, adults who didn’t watch since kids Sailor Moon. Not sure the movie is good for that (for the reason you mentioned) but maybe they’re going to make available the Crystal Series (season 1 till 3) at the same time on the streaming platform (?).

I’m sad because it seems that actual care was put into the movies this time (Hiring original animators and character designer, getting ANZA and Yoko involved) however it’s not exactly surprising, is it? Sailor Moon Season 3 did terribly on Blu Ray even though it was a marked improvement over the first two seasons in a lot of ways.

I’m going to echo what previous posters have said I think a lot of it has to do with the Crystal effect. Whether you’re a big fan of it or not it just hasn’t resonated with Japanese fans. Whether this was due to the original online-only release, the 2/3week gap, animation issues, pacing issues or all of the above, it’s clear to see that Japanese fans crave the 90s anime. So many Japanese comments on Twitter and YouTube confirm as much. Probably why they got Tandano back on board and decided to distance theirselves from the Crystal moniker.

Obviously COVID is also a factor, it’s be stupid not to think so. Doremi was released when infections were still low. And as someone said Doremi was a completely new movie and idea by Junichi Sato so already it’s credentials were pretty high. That’s not to say Chiaki Kon isn’t a good director either, but Junichi Sato is basically the father of magical girl shows. I felt that movie has a certain air of pedigree that perhaps Eternal doesn’t. Again, this is all speculation on my part.

I am upset that it feels like Japan is sort of.. disowning Sailor Moon. Especially when overall Eternal is probably the best thing in the Crystal franchise. But it is what it is. I hope foreign fans enthusiasm will atleast convince Toei to put the final season out in some form. I think probably after that they need to give the franchise a bit of a rest for a couple of years for there to be interest again. Absence makes the heart fonder, after all.
