So, Crystal was supposed to be a series for the grown up fans of the 90s anime. Unfortunately, Crystal was not an anime that fulfilled expectations and standards for an adult audience and wasn‘t a huuuge success. So now Toei presents Eternal, with a character design that makes the protagonists look like children and Pegasus like a pony, because Chibiusa is now a kindergardener. Is Toei shifting the target audience to younger folks? As they did it in the 90s with SuperS? If yes, what does that mean for the movies and their darker tone? Will everything be soft-washed and kids-friendly?

I think it's unfair to base opinions on unrealesse , and unfinished footage.I personally don't think their catering at children at all.Season 3 look even more childish, and it air late at night

im not saying that it’s marketed to children at all, but at adults who specifically liked the 90s version

I also think they are going for the 90s crowd mostly.

I was pretty curious about the content of this movie though. Some of the harsher scenes in the manga never fully made it to TV but I hear you can get away with a lot more in Japanese cinema than you can on TV.

Honestly, I don't what it is anymore.

This is like the America reboot of Power Rangers...that does it's own thing but plays the iconic song at the end to get you pumped up.

They're pandering to the 90s crowd. Its that simple. They didn't have faith for Crystal to be its own thing so they flubbed the whole thing and scrambled to the old fanbase because they're wishy washy and cheap.
I loved the '90s anime, but you know what I loved even more? The live action series. When will Toei pander to the live action series fanbase by actually acknowledging the live action series even exists? Give me Dark Mercury, Mio Kuroki, and C'est la vie in Eternal, you cowards!

But seriously, Crystal flopped because it was bad, and instead of taking a critical look at why it failed and addressing those problems, they just decided to reference the original anime as much as possible in the hopes nostalgia pandering would distract fans from being vocally critical.

I liked the 90's anime, yet I also loved the live action drama whole a lot more than 90's anime. That's Mio Kuroki.

I acknowledge Crysal was a failure, but using references to the 90's anime to please certain fans isn't most the constructive criticism.

They completely changed their vision of Crystal by Season 3. They went from the vision that catered to "young adult women" who grew up with the series to that of the fans who grew up with the 90's anime. So I think the movie is going to cater to the latter and also general Crystal/Manga fans.

The cute style has nothing to do with the target audience. It is a reflection of the current trends in the medium. Stuff like Higurashi, Puella and other shows cemented the cute look as norm nowadays. This is what people like now. These are the kid of designs people like at this day and age. Moe is not new term and it is not a negative term. There were moe characters in the 90s, but the trends were different. Eternal has cute style, true, but it has most of the features of old moe style. S3 was exactly what new moe trends offer - flustered glowy cheeks, bubble hair, over suturated eyes. This style, especially with the glow on the cheeks reminds me of a certain genre that is definetely not for kids. The new style is way prettier and better done moe style that evokes magiral girls thoughts instead of lolicon shows. The moe style is in any genre, people like it. It is in bloody thrillers, horrors, shounens, jouseis. It has nothing to do with the target audience. And no, Eternal has inspiration from the 90s but we still don't know to what extent to judge it for it. As for style as much as I like what I see in the trailer, looks nothing like the 90s show. Target audience for Sailor Moon Crystal are obviously adult women. Look at the merch. It is way too expensive to aim kids. There are make ups, clothes, bridal dress, jewelry that is actual jewelry. It was also a late night anime for season 3. As for the artstyle itself - it is season 3 based, but with the iffy stuff removed, Balanced proportions, eyes that for once look like the manga's eyes (If Sakou did the eyes like this nobody would have called her take lifeless), no bubble hair, no frog mouths, I do not see how Eternal design makes them look younger. They do in the first concept art, but the actual style in the trailer looks a bit different.

My thoughts exactly,it's not gear at children or the 90s anime.

This is a subjective question that can't possibly be answered until the movies are released. Just going off the manga itself, the movies ought to be targeted towards young adults. Dream is much darker in tone than previous arcs. With potential scenes such as Usagi coughing up blood and having her face melted off in particularly gruesome fashion down to the bone, those aren't appropriate for kids younger than 12.
