I am just going to review these episodes together.

Episode 164 and 165, is the climax of this arc. I am telling you this Queen Nehelena she is Chibiusa's Queen Beryl, with her unrequited love for Heilos. We have seen this story before, though I think that is more minor to Queen Nehelena's motivation.

I liked the whole call on everyone's dreams to save the day, it is very Disney of them, we got some callbacks, but I was hoping to see more callbacks, it be awesome to see the outer sensei and baby Hotaru to make cameos.

So Zirconia's dead, the Amazoness Quarter are good guys now and have lost their powers, why is it seemingly all the villains that turn good and don't die lose their powers, but did they?

Looks like Chibiusa is going to fight the final boss, this looks to be an epic end to this arc, only one episode to go. And than we are onto Stars, if you can believe it.

Episode 164

Hulu titles the episode as “The Golden Crystal Appears: Nehelenia's Magic”
Diana’s use of “Mamoru-sama” is subbed as “Master Mamoru”

Luna’s use of “majo” is subbed as “sorceress”

Nehelenia’s chant, ““Yume yume utagau koto nakare yume miru kodomo no yume no yume,” is subbed here as “Never ever forget to remember. A child’s dream is a dream of dreams.”

Palla-Palla’s reaction to her tripping and falling down is subbed as “Owie!”

Viz’s subs title the episode as “The Golden Crystal Appears: Nehelenia's Magic”

Jun-Jun’s technique of getting out of her mirror is subbed as “Escape Orb!”

“Nehelenia-sama” is subbed as “Queen Nehelenia”

Ves-Ves’s use of Zirconia-obaba” is subbed as “Grandma Zirconia”

Ves-Ves’s technique of peering into her orb is subbed as “See-Through Orb!”

Zirconia’s use of “Onore!” is subbed as “Curse you!”

Jun-Jun’s use of “Obaba” is subbed as “Grandma’s” in the subs for her line “Grandma’s getting her butt kicked.”

Then it’s subbed as “Grandma” in later uses as well.

Jun-Jun’s reaction to hearing Nehelenia say that the Quartet is of no use anymore is subbed as “D*** you!” (only as the actual word rather than with asterisks).

In the next-episode preview, the subs title the next episode as “When the Crystal Shines: The Beautiful Power of Dreams.”

Episode 165

Hulu titles the episode as “When the Crystal Shines: The Beautiful Power of Dreams”

All of the dialogue in the beginning scene is subbed the same here as all of it was subbed in the previous episode, save for these two lines of Nehelenia’s:

Episode 164: “I will put a curse on you that will put you in an endless sleep.”
Episode 165: “I will put a curse on you that will put you in an endless slumber.”

Episode 164: “The world!”
Episode 165: “Now… the world!”

Viz’s subs title the episode as “When the Crystal Shines: The Beautiful Power of Dreams”

Mercury’s use of “Dare?!” (“Who?!”) is subbed as “Who said that?!”

Mars’s use of “Kyotsukete!” (“Be careful!”) is subbed as “Keep your guard up!”

Nehelenia’s introduction of herself to the Senshi is subbed as “I am Nehelenia, the True Moon Queen.” “And as of today, Queen of all the world.”

The subs have Jupiter refer to Nehelenia as the “boss” of the Dead Moon.

Diana’s use of “Mamoru-sama” is subbed as “Master Mamoru”

Venus’s response to Jupiter saying that they’ll die before kneeling to Nehelenia is subbed as “Yeah! Darn right!”

At the 7:15 mark, there is a video glitch in which the video gets fuzzy and pixilated before returning to normal. Here’s a screenshot of the glitch, and a screenshot of how it’s supposed to be (taken from a second later).

During the above glitch, Jun-Jun’s line of “Aaaa! Sugei!” (“Whoa! Amazing!”) is subbed as “My god, she’s incredibly strong!”

The webbed Juban-chō Shopping District sign is not subbed.

Diana’s line of “Kono koe wa…” (“This voice is…”) is subbed as “I know that voice…”

There is a typo in the subs for this line of Helios’s: “I’m… I am the protector of the Golden Crystal here in this sacred place called Endymion. I am Helios.” The word “Endymion” ought to be “Elysion”.

Endymion’s use of “Sailor Moon-tachi” (“Sailor Moon and the others”) is subbed as “Sailor Moon and me”

Nehelenia’s use of “Kisama Helios!” is subbed as “D*** you, Helios!” (only with the actual four-letter D-word instead of asterisks)

At the 15:54 mark, there is another video glitch in which the video gets fuzzy and pixilated again before returning to normal. Here’s a screenshot of the glitch, and a screenshot of how it’s supposed to be (taken from a second later).

At the 16:08 mark, there is another video glitch in which the faces of Mercury and Mar are almost blackened out for a frame. Here is a screenshot of the glitch.

Palla-Palla’s rude gesture that she gives to Nehelenia is subbed as “Phooey on you!”

Ves-Ves telling Sailor Moon to use the Golden Crystal to defeat Nehelenia is subbed as “Use its power to kick Nehelenia’s butt.”

Chibi Moon’s long, beckoning speech that hypnotizes/mind-controls everyone (except Motoki) is subbed as “Everyone! Can you hear my voice? I’m calling everyone on Earth who possesses beautiful dreams! I beg you! Help me with your power! Very bad people are attacking our world! Our world is about to be destroyed. If we let these people get their way, our word—a world where dreams can come true—will be ruined! They’re trying to trample on our precious dreams and the people we love! I beg you! Pray with me! Fight with me and yell out with me: “Moon Crisis Power!””

In the next-episode preview, there is a typo in the subs for line of “Next time on Sailor Moon Supers:” The second S in the word “Supers” should be uppercased as “SuperS” like how it’s been in the subs for all of the previous SuperS next-episode previews (save for the one that was in the final S episode, which contained the different typo of “Super S”).

The subs title the next episode as “Dreams Forever: Fill the Heavens with Light.”

Thanks for keeping up with these subtitle observations, Sabrblade. I find them very interesting.

I know they've subbed it like this for a few episodes, but shouldn't they have translated the first two "yume" as well? It seems a little odd to begin the translation at "utagau."

I guess we got stuck with that hashed up opening for the entire second half of the season. Kind of a bummer.

I'm just so relieved that there's only one more SuperS episode to get through before we can finally move on to Sailor Stars. This season has been a nightmare to observe.

Also glad that folks are still reading the notes I take; tells me that what I'm doing isn't all for naught.

I wouldn't go that far though I will admit that the two episode a week schedule has made watching this season a bit of a chore unlike the last few times I watched in the past.

As for Stars, 167-172 for me, after that I'm dropping it.

If there's any technical issues, by all means let Viz know before we have to go through more exchange programs.

Did they get the names in the Helios/Chibiusa relationship right? The old SuperS dub screwed that up by having him call her "Rini" the entire time instead of Mini-Moon, so when they got to the episode where he calls her by her "real name" for the first time, it was really awkward.

For me, it's not just having to sit through this confounded season again that has made it feel like a chore, but all the typos and technical glitches that seem to be more abundant this season than ever before.

But I'll so be glad to observe Sailor Stars once SuperS is over since, not only will SuperS finally be behind me, but I'll be looking at the first official English subs for the one season that never ever got any official English subs before. This time, I won't have any prior official subs to compare them to like those from ADV and Pioneer. My only subbing references for this season will be fansubs, and the ones I'll be using for comparison will be the Sailor Moon Center ones (which were new subs for the first few episodes, while the rest of the episodes had subs derived from the old VKLL subs). It will be momentous.

For the first point, as I am neither on Facebook nor Twitter, others may have to be the ones to contact Viz about anything I note in this thread.

For the second point... SuperS hasn't been dubbed yet. This is the "subtitle Observations" thread.

^ I know that. I was asking how the subtitles for those scenes were handled since names and what characters call each other can easily be botched in these translations.
But the Pioneer subs didn't make that mistake. Only the Cloverway dub got it wrong, and that was due to Cloverway having had Pegasus already refer to Rini by name in episodes long before he was first supposed to in the final episodes. So the mistake was already set in stone well before it could come about without Cloverway re-scripting the scene (and since they didn't re-script it, and used "Mini Moon" instead, the error was made all the much worse).

Likewise, Viz's subs didn't make this mistake either. I didn't feel that this was worth mentioning since it was gotten right before in previous subs, and is less of a concern than if Viz's redub will get it right or not.

I usually don't have much worth saying, but I appreciate your observations too Sabrblade. :) And I'm so excited about Stars. It's going to be surreal finally having official subs for the season. I'm curious to see how they'll handle some of the lines, like the riddle Iron Mouse asks Galaxia before getting killed. :P

Yeah there's nothing really to compare the translation to since it's never been officially released with English subs. O.o Though if it counts, the official Chilean DVD for Sailor Moon Stars has an English subtitle track ripped directly from the MissDream fansubs.

Yeah, only thing you can compare it to is fansubs. And I don't think Miss Dream ever fansubbed more than the first 2-3 episodes of the anime. VKLL, and Sailor Moon Center (which did the first few Stars episodes, and then kept VKLL's for the rest) are the most widely circuited version of Stars fansubs, I believe.

I agree, there is nothing really to compare it to. The Chilean DVDs used the edited subtitles Sailor Moon Center did for their fansubs(episodes 167-176, I believe, were translated by SMC and the rest were by VKLL). There is another group (FoT) that also subbed the Stars seasons but used the VKLL subs as a base - I guess you can say it's partially re-translated.

Holy smokes, guys! Sailor Stars's first episode is on Hulu today with SuperS's final episode! :eeklez:

I was expecting SuperS's final episode to be uploaded alone, but nope! Sailor Stars's first episode is up too!

Unfortunately, today is not a good day for me to observe both of them. Hopefully tomorrow can be the day I get them observed.

"Mirror Paredri"

Very happy that they got that right. Dare we hope for "Seiren?"

(Also, was it just my computer, or did that episode look especially grainy?)

It IS really grainy.

Right off the bat: "I embrace all things. I am the Guardian born of all love. I am... Eternal." This is REALLY flat to me for a dream sequence, and there's no "I am..."/"Watashi wa..." before Eternal.

Had to come somewhere to complain about it because that's one of my favorite scenes in the series.

I figured Stars would be uploaded today. Viz released their schedule for this month a few day's ago, and it had said that Sailor Stars would be starting today. (though it mistakenly said 167 and 168 ^_^') Viz had also been hyping up the premiere of Stars, both on their Twitter and via press releases on other sites like Crunchyroll. They probably made an exception to the "break between seasons" rule due to momentous of an occasion legal Stars subs is. :P

I'm expecting Siren though. And we'll probably have to rely on Madman for a good release as far as the video goes.

Viz's subtitles do take a bit of liberties. I'm guessing they thought the "I am..." helped it flow better, kind of like how they ignored small words here and there to get straight to the point in other lines. Too bad we'll never know how Pioneer would've subbed Stars.

What, so will it be episode 200 that gets a week all to itself like 89? Will the special shorts and movies follow shortly then? :ohdear:

I might just have to catch up on SuperS myself this week, since another thread I was following along with has really ground to a halt this year at around episode 140. (But then I think to myself, "Maybe he'll have time to review 141 once the 'holiday season' passes...")
