Not sure if this goes in the General or Crystal section since it's about the series as a whole.

So anyway I was looking at the comments on Sailor Moon videos such as the Sailor Moon English theme and the SM Crystal trailer and since it's on the front page of YouTube, there are many casual people who aren't into Sailor Moon or anime at all. So LOTS of people are saying things like "OMG so inappropriate" or "Those huge boobs aren't for kids" or "Why are they dressing so slutty?"

These comments make me so mad because Sailor Moon really isn't that inappropriate. My friend and I totally raged after seeing these comments. I mean if you watch Sailor Moon there really aren't that much perverted scenes if you think about it.

Even though the transformations feature them nude, it's very modest and there isn't big close ups to the private areas at all. There's no boob jiggle or much fanservice at all. Look at the Starlights for example. Their outfits may be quite skimpy but there is NEVER any boob jiggling or bouncing from them at all. Although, in Sailor Jupiter's transformation, you can see her butt for a few frames, however, it's really not that big of a deal.

Also people have been saying stuff like "OMG what short skirts!" and commenting about the panties and such. There may be a FEW panty shots here and there in Sailor Moon, but they are REALLY rare.

And I feel like it's hypocritical because they call Sailor Moon perverted, but haven't they even taken a look at animes like Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Fairy Tail or Soul Eater? No offense to people who watch these animes (I don't), but these animes feature a lot more nudity and fanservice than Sailor Moon has. The female characters get half-nude a lot, find themselves in sexual situations, and their huge boobs usually jiggle, too. But even still, people call out Sailor Moon for being infamous of it. Don't know why...

Also have any of you seen Nostalgia Critic's review of Sailor Moon? I thought it was okay, but he over-exaggerated when he talked about how perverted it was. He said they're too young to be wearing such sexy outfits and that they're only 14 to be getting nude like that. He also said a couple other things but I forgot what they were. Anyway, his review has SO many views so a lot of people who watch Nostalgia Critic and have never seen Sailor Moon before make a lot of misconceptions that it's a naughty anime.

And the pervy skirt misconception really bothers me. I mean seriously, Dawn from Pokemon wears a mini skirt and Misty wears short shorts! But even still, people call Sailor Moon perverted-looking yet they rarely talk about how perverted Dawn and Misty look. I don't hate Pokemon, though, I love it. But still, that's really hypocritical.

Does anyone else hate this? Or not? What do you think?

Really this is nothing more then the Madonna/Whore concept courtesy of American prudishness. They basically have this view that sexy Women can not be respected and are somehow inappropriate for children to look at. You even mentioned that on Shounen shows they have Girls in sexy outfits with no complaints. I truly believe that these people just have a negative view of sex and their comments honestly might as well say that the Girls have to wear burkhas in order to be "respected."

I have a cousin like that. He condems SM, chatises me for watching it, calls them either dikes, sluts or ******!
He thinks the entire show is just too "gay" & that men shouldnt watch it. Its for girls.

I often tell him that I love SM a lot & that hes intimidated by sexy girls in authority and his judgement is a little swayed. For example, he raves about DBZ. Being this and that of greatness and yet I brought to his attention that the show is riddled with fanservice, nude male characters and a stretched out plot.
Basically youre just hating on SM because all the protagonist are female, attractive and if they were real, theyd never go out with you.

I also get on him about this "I am pure and righteous and I must shield my children from the dark waves" attitude some Westerners have and its usually centralized around either female sexuality or homosexuality as a whole.

Whenever someone says something negative about SM,
most of the time I just grin (except towards my cuz who I like to argue with)

My parents made a comment about the show a long time ago when I started watching it and I just tuned them out.

SM characters dont do anything perverted at all and what these people fail to realize is that these are young girls that are transitioning into women, and they have positve goals towards life, not out in Tokyo sleeping with civilians, monsters and henchmen
People rather focus on their leotard frills and mock panty shots.

People make fun of what they don't understand.

It goes for basically anything in life, and if you let the rantings of ignorant people get to you constantly then you'll give yourself an ulcer.

Here's what I find funny about it...

They will condemn SM for things like that because people believe it is targeted at a younger audience, but then you have shows like Madoka which goes off the deep-end in many more ways and I'm not hearing as many complaints.

Violence... okay.
Blood and gore... okay.
Death... okay.
Seeing a bare thigh... OMG PERVERT!

What, do they want them to dress in ankle-length skirts? We can go back to the Victorian age if we want to... But in the words of Robin Williams, "People so uptight, the Brittish kicked them out."

I was in the same boat for a while. When I was younger, I stayed a big closet fan of Sailor Moon since it was so publicly accepted as a "young girls show" that I felt people would blab dumb jokes behind my back and make fun of me (some did to my face). As I got older, I started getting many friends who more and more liked Sailor Moon (or anime in general) to where it didn't matter. Now being an adult I could give two ***** what people think, but I understand where your male friend is coming from.

Actually, panty shots are technically nonex... Oh wait, episode #2. Never mind... :googly:

I was tormented in middle school for being a moonie, so it could be worse.

It does surprise me that people are saying the same things they did back in the 90's.

These are the same people that most likely read X-Men with the White Queen...

personally I find it quite annoying. I could name a few shows that have what they are complaining about. Oh well. Still won't stop me from watching Sailor Moon.

Just an observation:

Madoka is actually aimed at males aged between 17 and 40 (seinen anime). The anime's target audience is not children.

Honestly, the Sailor Senshi are dressed no more skimpy than Misty from Pokemon, and isn't she even younger they are?

He "over-exaggerated"? You do realize that that's part of the point of his reviews, right? His opinions are satirical for entertainment purposes. Not everything he says is supposed to legitimately represent how he truly feels about what all he reviews. He plays his opinions up for laughs. The SM review was meant to be taken as non-seriously.

After all, the Nostalgia Critic is a character that he plays. Doug Walker in real life is hardly that much like his Internet personality.

Hmm, I guess so, but lots of newcomers to Sailor Moon get the wrong impression from it. Eh, I guess they'll learn the truth sooner or later.

What he ought to do is make an audio commentary about that review since it would not only give his true thoughts about the series (which would probably be hardly any different from the Critic's opinions, but toned way down), but also give us some insight into the what went about behind-the-scenes in bringing about this review.
