In what way wonky? Off timed ? (I went to Osaka so i don't know / never had the chance to use the glasses)

I would suspect probably because someone is sat with a button pressing a button to show the next subtitle on live performances as there will always be a few seconds off here and there.

With this being pre-recorded footage you would expect the timing to have been cleaned up. Maybe they might have been edited a bit.

But yes assuming they are the "glasses" subtitles they were translated by someone on staff with access to the original cast script and have done quite a bit of pro translation outside of Sailor Moon.

Unfortunately I can't seem to find the UNV discussion thread, but someone mentioned that the translation was a bit wonky. I remember they said "Maboroshi no Ginzuisho" was translated as "Moon Crystal" but I can't remember the other examples they gave.

I've been starting to wonder if this is really an officially licensed event? I mean, if it was official, I think Viz would have announced it on their Twitter account first and I imagine something this major they would want at a con like Anime Expo or some sort of major nationwide event like the screening of the R movie. But I don't see any postings about this on Twitter and Char from Viz Media hasn't said anything about this and she's a huge Seramyu fan. If this is a fansub, I'm very skeptical about this especially if they're charging tickets, because the first rule of fansubs is fansubs are not for profit.

Viz Media doesn't own the rights to SeraMyu. Their only involvement is with the anime through Toei Animation (who isn't involved with the current round of musicals).

Yeah, there's no reason for Viz to be involved, and perhaps they haven't heard about it yet. Maybe someone could tweet them about it or leave a comment on their FB page. But I do agree that it's a bit weird this small, seemingly random theater in LA would be screening the latest musical. Since they mention exclusive behind-the-scenes content and interviews, that suggests this is officially licensed; I'm just wondering what made this theater interested in showing the musical and how they went about licensing it.

I was just about to post that when you posted the update. I have to say I'm very shocked by this news. I never thought Seramyu in the U.S. was something we would get. I hope this will get expanded to other theaters and there will be a home video release in North America. I hope they will eventually release the old musicals too and especially the old 90s musicals. I also hope this will lead to the eventual home video release of PGSM. So is Viz not involved in this? Who is distributing the musicals then or is it the Japanese company that's releasing them directly in the U.S.? What's going to happen to the Miss Dream fansubs now?

If they are legit fansubbers they will pull their fansubs

I rreally hope people will support this who are in America - this is the chance to get Seramyu entrenched in to the US.

They will watch the sales figures VERY closely. Sales and bums on seats alone will determine if they proceed further or give up and walk away from doing anything in the states.

I just did a domain lookup on the sailormoonlive.com domain and its owned by a "Spotlight Cinema Networks".

They appear to own / associated with cinemas in major cities.

First guess would be this is Japan doing it directly - they have hired a cinema company to do the screening.

If they show it at a theater in my state, I will definitely attend and try to get my friends and family to go with me. Hopefully, I'd like this to lead to the other musicals getting subtitled home video/theatrical releases, and eventually for there to be English-language live productions of them or original musicals.

ETA: I see that the site is live now and some states/theaters are already listed. I hope that's not it??? They'd better add more states. I need them to at least show it in Mass, or else I'll have no hope of getting to see it.

They haven't pulled their manga scanlations despite the availability of the Kodansha manga, so I expect nothing from them.
I expect they would get a C&D from the musical company as they were pretty strict about clips of the new musicals on YouTube but you would probably still be able to find it on other sites.

I hope they will expand the list of cities but it doesn't seem to be playing in my state but I don't expect it to be playing at my city any. What I really want are official English subtitled DVDs of the Myus so I can watch it whenever I want without traveling long distances.

They've added a theater in Boston, but the theater's website doesn't have any information about any showings yet. Seems they are still adding theaters/cities to sailormoonlive.com, so if none near you have been announced yet, hopefully they will soon. (Still hoping for a screening in RI.)

I am going to the first screening at the downtown independent, March 10, noon. Say hi if you go!

It might be late to mention this but I've been there more than once and there's nothing sketchy about it. (Unless you count merely being in DTLA...) The events that go on there are most certainly official.

They've just added a ton of new states/cities (including actual New York), so it seems theaters are still being listed. I'm actually pleasantly surprised/impressed by how many theaters will be screening the musical. (How many theaters carried the R movie?) But still nothing for RI and only one theater for Boston/Mass whose website still doesn't mention the musical or ticket info :(
