Since the musical never ended up screening near me, and I didn't feel like waiting around forever for a Blu-ray release to maybe happen, I decided to just finally watch the Miss Dream fansub I'd downloaded forever ago but never got around to finishing. I really liked it and I think it's the best musical since La Reconquista. The acting and singing were really good and all the costumes looked great (except for ESM). As I said before though, I still think Usagi's makeup was terrible and made her look like a zombie. There were a few instances of long, awkward silences when someone obviously forgot their lines or missed their cues, and there were some moments of the camera focusing on the wrong character or part of the stage. I hope that in the screened / home video version they used different shots and cut out the awkward silences.
As for the story itself... I, too, was impressed by how faithful it was to the manga, but at the same time, they tried to cram in way too many plot points, so the show just felt really rushed and the pacing was really off. For instance
I was shocked and extremely disappointed that Iron Mouse and Tin Nyanko got killed off within the first half hour. They and their friendship were so cute; I really wanted to see more of them. If they were going to kill them off so quickly, why not include Heavy Metal Papillon, whom they included in all the past Stars musicals? And if they were going to include the River of Oblivion, why not include Mnemosyne and Lethe?
Similarly, there were way too many songs and they all just kind of ran into one another. A lot of the songs felt redundant and weren't especially memorable. I enjoyed "Sky of Jewels" but "Sailor Makeup" was a total dud.
Anyway, I loved seeing Satomi again, and finally getting Sailor Cosmos in an adaptation was enough to make me overlook the musical's problems. The cast's farewell messages were funny and moving. Galaxia's actress is a FIERCE DIVA QUEEN. The Chibi Chibi actresses were so precious. I laughed when Fighter's actress called herself Healer by mistake. I didn't realize Maker, Rubeus, and Hawk's Eye were all played by the same actress, so that was cool to find out.
So yeah. Overall this was a high note for this run to go out on. Can't wait for the new musical next year and for the musical projects this year.
