Well anime and video games are a huge part of Japanese pop culture and anime is one of the most famous and profitable exported products from Japan worldwide, iconic Japanese anime characters like Sailor Moon, Goku, Luffy etc are all popular and well-known worldwide because of their respective anime series, so I'm not surprised that these Japanese characters are appointed Ambassadors for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, since many people worldwide are familiar with them.

true, but I wonder why Mario isn't part of this lineup? Mmm maybe it's because Mario is a video game character and not an 'animated' character? And this lineup is only for anime/animated characters. I think I might've just answered my own question :D ok nevermind...

Probably because Olympic Ambassadors will be able to put on merchandise not sanctioned by the original creators/license holders, but things that the IOC licenses and Nintendo presumably doesn't want to have someone else be able to dictate things that Mario will appear on.

Remember Nintendo is the same company who specified how Bowser takes his coffee for Wreck-It Ralph.

I can bet they outsourced this ambassadors video to the same Philippines freelancers who produced SMC.

All the images they use in the video have clearly visible compression artefacts and look like they were scaled up from 100x100 jpgs. And the entire video consists of these low quality cropped images just appearing on screen. Is that the best promo for Olympic Games (!) the entire Japanese animation industry can produce these days? I wonder what kind of "quality" olympic merchandise we'll see later.

Maybe because Nintendo had quality requirements which wouldn't fit into the $50 budget Japanese Olympic Committee had for their promotional campaign. ^_^

That is a Good Point........I SHOULDN'T be Surprised Knowing how Tokyo 2020 wants to market their games to the world, espically after the closing ceremony they had with Super Mario and all.

But I still am PLEASANTLY surprised since while I had Hope for this, I had lowered to Cautious Optimism not to get to wrapped up in it being possible if it did not happen.

Japan has not hosted a Games since 1998 and since then with how Games carry themselves and showcase themselves to the world has greatly changed. Also since then while the Anime Invasion was indeed in full swing Around the World it still was very young and needed time to see how its impact would be on the world, which we see today.

For Me as a Fan of Sailor Moon and Many of these characters in General I am VERY, VERY Happy to see this! It shows just how FAR They have come in how they have presented themselves to the world and the Fact that mostly an Entire Nation or the ones running the Tokyo 2020 Olympics at least felt they have that level of Strength to represent their Nation to the World;

THAT is Truly a HIGH HONOR IMO Every Sailor Moon Fan and Fan of these others characters can now take allot of Pride in! ^_^

Sailor Moon is now apart of a Major Event in World History the world Looks towards when they happen, to be apart of that helps cement her more as the Icon Sailor Moon and her Franchise Truly is and how we as fans have felt about it for years. :)

BTW, maybe their current PM's wife would cosplay as Sailor Moon in the opening ceremony (if he'd still be in office at the time)? XD

Yeah, the last time they held it was '64, marking a milestone in modern Japanese history - hope that it'd transform the country again. :)

I understand that cost control of the event is of a pretty high priority for the Committee & the current Tokyo mayor. lol

This is so cool! =^_^=

Though what else does it mean? Will they have a live-action AMV of sorts at the opening ceremonies, or something else? Or am I just over thinking it? :P
I Agree, it is so VERY COOL Cause it puts Sailor Moon on the Front Stage of a Major World Gathering Event that will be logged in History. I allows for Sailor Moon to Represent her country and what her franchises Influences has meant to the World!

The Past week has been an excellent time for Sailor Moon, the R Movie was in my Local Theaters and Now This! =^_^=

Also, NO You are not overthinking this, they are good theories toward where this all might go and all of them are Pretty Epic!

Right now it is to early to tell what they will do with these Anime Icons, but I like to believe we might have something like them having Anime Style Videos of them presenting the Games to the World building up to the games to promote them.

Also with that Appearances of them in these Videos in different parts of the world.

Maybe Their OWN Anime Special where they all are together/crossover, not a plot around the games but just a plot to show how Adventurous Anime has been Threw-out the Years!

Also, I do believe it possible THEY COULD be apart of a set of Videos at the Opening Ceremonies of the Games and During the Games and the Ending as well.

Also the VAST Amount of Unique Merchandise they will have with Sailor Moon and other Icons on them as well.

These are just a few theories, but all of them plus ones we don't see coming are just going to be EPIC! ^_^

LOL, Yea Indeed the Level of Epic if Each Nation had a Different Anime Icon for each accompany them would be Beyond Epic! ^_^

I was thinking of something else they might do;

IMO this is a GRAND Opportunity for These Olympics to Finally Showcase the Tremendous Influence and Effect that Fiction Characters have on Inspiring People to become Greater, Better and Pursue Their Dreams!

We all have our Real Life Heroes and Inspirations and Athletes at the Olympics always Honorably Showcase those Real Life Inspirations very well to the world. But we tend to forget allot of us start as kids and we have Fiction Character(s) Inspirations as well the Inspire Us to Become Great People Like the Heroes in Fiction.

So This could be the 1st Games that WITH These Anime Icons Front and Center as Faces of the Tokyo Games, Their can be some forms of showcasing this.

Here are some Quick Ideas/Thoughts they could do:

* Athletes Tell their Stories on how Some of These Anime Icons Like Sailor Moon or Other Anime Icons or mainly Any Fiction Character(s) Icons Help to Inspire them to Become the Olympian They are Today!

* Also a Novelty idea; They could Give Free Shirts, Hats, Jackets, Hand-Fans or Small Posters with the Image of their FAVORITE Anime Icon of the Games to Showcase which ones they Like/Love/Inspired them the Most in life! Just think about seeing the Image of SO Many Olympians Entering the Opening Ceremonies With Sailor Moon Shirts or Jackets or Hats or Hand-Fans or Posters or Anything like that showing how Sailor Moon or any other Anime Icon Help to Make them Olympians and Fans! :smug:

This is all nice and that, but I have to nitpick on the choice of characters: this is the Olympics, a sport event, and not many of the characters are sportives. In order of presentation:

  • Jibanyan: not a sportsguy.
  • Son Goku: a martial artist, can qualify.
  • Monkey D. Luffy: a pirate, and a lazy guy at that. Would have been better to use Zoro.
  • Naruto: a soldier (as ninjas are official military in his country), and rather fit. Trains regularly. Can qualify even better than Goku, as, differently from him, he's never been a prize fighter so as a sport practitioner he's an amateur and could actually take part in the Olympic Games.
  • Cure Miracle and Cure Magical (the two specific Pretty Cures shown there): not sportsgirls. Should have chosen one of the miriads of Pretty cures who actually practiced sports (already in the original series Cure Black played lacrosse. Or if we want an Olympic sport we can go to Yes! Pretty Cure 5, where Cure Rouge plays (actual) football).
  • Sailor Moon: surprisingly enough, the old anime version (that they've used here) is the best ice skater in history, as shown by her quadruple Axel (no skater has ever done one), so she qualifies. Would have been better Sailor Venus, as she's the one who regularly practices sports both as an exercise to fight better and for fun, but the choice is good enough.
  • Shin Chan: no. Just no.
  • Astroboy: not a sportsguy, and anyway better qualified for the Paralympics.

So, who the hell choose the characters?
