Well if a movie doesnt have good numbers on its first weekends and the sessions are empty lik Eternal, exhibitors ( cinemas ) will take that movie out of their buildings cause its not giving them money and they will replace that space for another movie that can give them the money that eternal is not giving them. So the movies that are succesful on the first days are the ones that get extended for more days so they can keep making money. Eternal is already almost out of the top 10 in its first weekend.

Well that man gave technical facts that he must have taken from japanese cinema tickets sources. How can you dispute that and disapprove him because you dont like what he is saying by: and that man is? ...
what am I disputing exactly ? If the guy is providing correct numbers (and once again who is this guy; one source from an unknow guy who has less than 5000 followers on Twitter is legit since when? ); I still don’t see where we can deduce that the goal of TOEi was to get 320k entries... based on what ? Available booked seats ? Well in Austria you can book every seats you want they’re all open to reservation; that doesn’t mean that movie producers target a goal 100% of booking seats specially right now...

Again pure speculation.

Have you seen the number of WW84? their are extremely bad still they’re so happy about the streaming records in US that they already confirmed a third movie after a week or so...

So yeah it seems if the numbers are legit that obviously disappointing. But right now in COVID situation only streaming numbers will be taken into consideration... I’m barely sure that they decided even this week before this HUGE FAILURE that due to the actual situation Part 2 will come directly into streaming... did you get that the target these 2 movies are probably international due to Netflix deal? ...
Whatever...

Toei sure has a bad way of advertising shows they have little faith in with costly wall decor, posters, and much more.

I know that in the states, when a film is shown in a theater, the theater gets the bulk of the profits so it was a risky affair to begin with if they were expecting huge numbers.

The coins for all these advertisements in Japan are coming from somewhere and it aint from fans praying to Pegasus to protect their Sailor Moon continuation dreams or Toei's GoFundMe page.

Maybe the bulk of this flurry of advertising is pushed by Naoko and Bandai because I can't see Toei beating a dead horse (sorry Helios) with an unprofitable product.

Toei knows merchandise, not the anime, is Sailor Moon's highest selling point.

I find all this advertisement stuff enticing. If they ever had something like that here I'd be the first one in and last one to leave. I need that Eternal Senshi background as a poster. It literally makes you want to buy the products.

A Sailor Moon Eternal blush, lipstick, lipgloss, nail polish and other makeup is really a great idea. I know women love those items!

I still want that Kaleidescope proplica. I just know that thing will sell and it changes colors. They need to sell the Sailor Crystals as actual gemstones and also Figuarts of Artemis, Phobos, and Deimos too. The Sailor Crystals could play each Senshi's theme from Crystal while flashing.

We need a video game and more based on each Season and you can play as your favorite Senshi..etc

I can only eat so many Mamoru McNuggets from the chicken place before I get indigestion... I need more stuff..

Sailor Moon Eternal 2021 will be great on Netflix. Easy access from the comfort of your own home? You don't have to waste gas and money on OP snacks? Sign me up!

Neither did I know that ONE source of Twitter means that it’s legit... but whatever. :)

let’s make people here happy (I mean the usual con-members here) : it’s a huge failure:usagi:.

Naoko will get ruin, and go back to been an anonymous writer. She deserves it, Crystal is such a DEBACLE and HORRIBLE S@@t! I guess she’s crying right now, and regret that she didn’t follow advices from members here who knows everything from cinema figures, to production, edition, drawing, movie making and even music production etc :).

TOEI will cancel everything tomorrow morning SAILOR MOON is over forever. :kero:

Nah, I still don't buy whole "emotionless , empty eyes" thing.
When they tried, they could make them work, most of the time they were lazy or the director didn't care.
I mean, I love her expression on my avatar, she has that "in love" look in her eyes, another quick example was act 5 when makoto looks extreme happy about usagi being her friend (like, the whole episode was really good with the expressions).
It was Sako's fault? Kinda, but also the staff who couldn't work around with her designs or the director for not asking something better.
One of the problem is that they always tried to make them look these perfect pretty dolls but it backfired 'cause most of the time they always had the same face/expression.
And it's kinda funny how Akira's work for S1/S2 is so plain and always the same face (plus one of the worst imo), yet, he was able to make really good expressions in his own style lol
Of course, nothing against Yukie Sako but the designs weren't appealing to me at all, that's just my personal opinion only. Her designs don't scream "magical girl" to me though. I did love the 90s designs though and Tadano's is an upgraded version of that. Season 3 was getting better tho in that aspect... Now they just look perfect to me.

Just because a theater has 100 seats available doesn't mean it (or the studio behind the film being shown) expects to sell every last one of those tickets.

Toei may have printed whatever number of cards to give away with each ticket, but that doesn't mean they expected to give all those cards away over opening weekend.

Like, when they released the Stars musical in select international theaters, most of those showings only sold a few tickets, yet they continued to add the musical film to more theaters in more countries.

There's a pandemic going on. Also, Crystal hasn't the greatest reputation. I bet there are plenty of fans who are just waiting on reviews before deciding to buy tickets. There are also probably a lot of fans who are waiting to see the movie the week before Part II comes out.

Calm down people.

Guys, let’s put things into perspective. I don’t think it’s fair to compare it to franchises that are still huge. Especially during peak pandemic here in Japan. It has a lot going against it. Still, let’s compare it to another Toei franchises which are also considered ‘legacy’ or ‘nostalgia’ franchises nowadays.

Ojamo Doremi the Movie came out very recently and it made $490,000 dollars in its opening weekend. Eternal has outdone it, no?

Digimon Kizuna was estimated to make around $590,000 in its opening weekend. It made around $1.2 million. Better than Sailor Moon’s figures but this was also when COVID figures were still low and we weren’t in a SoE. An interesting point is that it made $9 million dollars in China. So I think it’s safe to say that a lot of its revenue has come from overseas. And I think Toei is aware of this. Most of their legacy series fare much better overseas than in their home country.

I definitely think that if Toei are smart about this they can still turn a good profit on the movie. Perhaps not in Japan but definitely overseas. We have to remember that while Precure reins king (queen?) in Japan it’s almost unknown outside of Asia. Sailor Moon on the other hand still has massive name recognition. I’m sure Toei is aware of this.

It’s a shame that Toei promoted the movies so well and it didn’t live up to expectations, yes. But it’s not the end of the world

May I suggest someone create a thread about the film's box office if anyone wants to discuss further? It's frankly exhausting seeing the same four people say the exact same thing for several pages and derail this thread into the same arguments.
I completely agree. I wanted to talk about the film on this thread, not the box office. I mean - look at this picture. Can we appreciate how well they are adapting every aspect of the manga in the new artstyle?

All the 90s fanatics - give me box office of the PERFECT AND TOTALLY SUCCESSFULL BLOCKBLUSTER 90S FILMS. Please, prove me these films sold tickets. Can you? It is so easy to claim how successful the 90s anime was when you have no actual info about it It sold merch and had high ratings on tv sure, but how successful were the movies, especially the MASTERPIECE the SuperS film was. What fluidity, what grace, zero derp face and the blu ray release in HD just shows how lovely detailed and pretty the distant shots were. Oh, my, van we just watch the 90s show and films over and over again and refuse anything else. It is easy to bash on the new in this day and age, while the old and QUESTIONABLE product was released at times this info was and is completely unavailable..

And whats your point? Who talked about the 90s movies here comparing to Eternal? So everytime a Crystal stuff has something negative about it, the playing card here is attacking the 90s anime like a child that doesnt has its sweets? xD

I dont know the numbers of the SuperS Movie ( they are hard to obtain, I will keep searching for them to see how it worked ). If it was a box office failure ( I dont think it was since it was a movie oriented to kids and there are videos of the opening day with long group of kids with their parents waiting on the street to enter ) I would say it too. Its facts. We are not talking about some metaphisical subject. Box office numbers are statistics, scientific facts. Why cant you accept them and analise it without getting angry cause you dont like them and dont want to accept them?

Anyway, I think that they printed 250.000 cards of that Super SM tadano art for each sold ticket so I guess thats an official number we can take in consideration for the expectative of Toei during the time the movie is on cinemas.
