America can do it if the appeal is there. A Sailor Moon movie is not hard to accomplish. As I mentioned in another thread, we have the cinematic budget to produce a high quality Sailor Moon movie. The Sailor Senshi fuku can easily be similar to Wonder Woman's. If we can create movies like Avengers or other visual masterpieces like Love & Monsters with CGI, a Sailor Moon movie is a piece of cake visually.
The problem would be the story/creative freedom. First of all, it'd have to be adapted for American audiences and Naoko would have to approve it and being that America is very diverse, the movie folks are going to want to push diversity with the cast so that all real girls can feel they can be a senshi too. Sailor Senshi of different racial backgrounds is going to be on the forefront. Naoko would have to approve that.
Second, some things in the story, like Mamoru's age would have to be changed for sure.
I feel like America has become a bit more progressive but there are still some content people like to gripe about in films marketed towards kids or even young adults (which I wont go into detail about)
It will most likely be PG rated film but may be PG-13 for creature action/violence depending on how they do it. I think a movie with 14 year old girls with powers like Marvel Super heroes and combat skills like Wonder Woman or whatever would be actually pretty cool.
The transformations won't be a problem because their bodies can glow while they transform so it won't seem "sexualized".
I'm pretty sure it is known how popular Sailor Moon is over here so execs are drooling at the opportunity to make money off this franchise.
It can be done but it really all comes down to whether Naoko would approve of some of these changes (and she probably wont) and I honestly feel there will be a lot of creative differences which will make the idea of a movie never get made for years to come. I'd be surprised if it does but it's a good thought.
