Oh, Takahashi... Thank god you were not to stay. Looking at these alone I still love Sakou best. Kill me with stones.
Sakou's designs look prettier without color, which I always found odd. But I can never get over Usagi's eyes looking so terribly alligned in her settei. She and Ami look the absolute worst out of S1/S2's designs (I'd say Makoto and Minako looked good).

I agree, Sakou's art of Makoto and Minako in the settei image is quite beautiful. What are your thoughts on Rei?

For me Rei is the hardest and both Sakou and Tadano nailed her. But in terms of Sakou - Makoto is prettiest at least on settei. I agree with Seira Hazuki , Sakou looks best without the coloring. With colors applied Tadano's designs looks quite appealing at she has best eyes. Takahashi's look like scrabbles to me with zero effort applied.

I think Takahashi’s designs work best when he is working in original characters. He knows how to make them cute and expressive.

The problem here (in my opinion, of course) was that they saw that one of the many problems of Crystal were designs (whether they were difficult to draw, inexpressive, not liked by the fans) and they chose someone who had successful designs for a younger demographic (which didn’t work either)

So in the end his job was to simplify designs but he didn’t have a lot of creative freedom. I think the mixed reception was to be expected if the only thing you have to do is simplify, well ... we can see the results.

He ended up picking the works things from his designs like horrible skirts, teary eyes for example. And that’s strange because he can design complicated skirts and cool eyes but well.

Bringing back Tadano, was the best decision even animators praise the decision because she has been doing character designs for years, her eyes expression and proportions are really good, because in the end she is always think in how these are going to be animated. We will learn more about her thoughts and creative process in the art guide and I can’t wait for that!

Line art with only color keys usually look more detailed and pretty, imo. It's probably the extra contrast.

I could never even recognize Ami in S1/2. Like, nothing about her looks remotely similar to any of her previous incarnations let alone the manga.

Even if she did... Look at his episodes of s1-2 - he was like f the superiors, I am drawing my frogs.
I hate Akira design with a passion. But for each their own. Tadano is balanced, and the ugly aspects of s 3 are gladly gone - these mouths...
Did you know that most people don't pucker their lips 24/7 in other anime? Or in real life? Are they frogs, too?

The mouths were still huge. Something I can never say about Tadano's designs. Akira's big moths and teary eyes give me the frog impression. I am sorry. I know he can do better. Wasn't he character designer for Suite Pretty Cure? I agree about Ami though, but it can be applied to Akira's everyone. They look like nothing else Sailor Moon related. Overall I am glad they brought Tadano. She really fixed all these issues. Her settei is way above Akira and Eternal looks great 80% of the time. One think I hate about Sakou‘s designs is Chibi Usa. She really failed there... Shingo as well.

That’s why it’s surprising he designed suite, Doki Doki and aikatsu but he seems to have combined his worst flaws in SM3.

Skirts in Sm are simple and he drew Dorito skirts, smiles are U shaped (Mimette’s design sheet shows this clearly) and they are not to ally fitting for the anime.

I think he is great but with original designs or more time to work. He was saturated in Smc 3

People hate on Akita’s designs and I understand why as they aren’t the most appealing. However in motion they were much easier to adapt and I’d rather have a well animated season overall than S1/2 where the still shots looked nice and CERTAIN episodes look decent but the rest was a hot mess. I’m glad we got the best of both worlds with Tandano.

I don't know why, but the key visual of SMC3 is 100 times better than his character design, while he was apparently the person who drew that key visual.
If everything was like that key visual, I wouldn't have complained anything. His key visual is not so detailed like SMC 1 - 2, yet animators still cannot follow.

I think Akira's designs were a breath of fresh air after the animation we saw in Seasons 1/2, but they've aged pretty badly. Hotaru with her weird bowl cut especially.

He was never my favorite Precure designer either, let alone animator from Seasons 1-2, so it's not like they couldn't have hired someone else from that team to do simpler designs either.

His mouths aren't much bigger than most other animators' in this day and age though. Most styles have the mouths slightly bigger and much lower on the face than they used to (and the "upside triangle mouth" used so often in SM is kind of rare nowadays), so I can't really blame him with making Sakou's designs more contemporary and streamlined. I get that some people hate Takahashi's mouths, but at least they allow the characters more freedom in their expressions than Sakou's. The BD corrections of S1/2 would constantly tone down the facial expressions on the characters whenever they opened their mouths wider than a centimeter.

The different highlights in the eyes are the only serious non-SM element in them imo, but Sakou didn't do them right either. Those altered versions of his style they started making shortly after S3 ended was the first time they had gotten them right.

(And yeah, he was the designer for Suite Precure, Doki Doki Precure, and Star Twinkle Precure.)

I agree about Ami though, but it can be applied to Akira's everyone. They look like nothing else Sailor Moon related. Overall I am glad they brought Tadano. She really fixed all these issues. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree about Takahashi but I'm with you on Tadano's art, lol.

I think we got to see both designs shine in Makoto’s introduction and Tellu’s episode (both which where helmed by the same animator.)

They looked gorgeous and it’s almost like a what could have been, I’m also sure that it was because the animator gave her own touch and both feel full of life and she makes the most with backgrounds!

(Still episode 5’s expressions for me are stiff, I think this is a flaw of the characters desings)

However, as mentioned Takahashi’s desings have aged poorly, I remember I liked them at first and how they look in motion, but after seeing Tadano’s (even in little glimpses) it’s like these should have been the desings from the start!

I'm not sure what it is, but I really don't like the giant bow on NQS' dress. In the manga it seemed fine, but in the anime it looks so stiff and kind of destroys the silhouette of her dress. Maybe it's just because they're not drawing them as being 8 feet tall like Naoko was by that point, IDK.

Yes, he did the character designs for "Suite Pretty Cure".

And which was your favorite s1-2 style? It was so inconsistent and there were multiple styles going on. There were some variations that were simpler but looked way better than Akira, so I am curious if you have a favorite.

For Stars they should hire Ikuko Itoh to close the circle ( she worked in the whole series except Stars ). Since she was clearly the best animator in the 90s and her designs are the most liked in the fandom, now that they brought back Tadano ( which didnt work on SuperS either ) it just feels right to call Ikuko to end the Crystal-90s circle. It just feels the right thing to do.

Anyway, if they keep Tadano I will be glad. Its the best we ve got to this day in Crystal. History tell us that they would change the design again ( which is something always exciting but at the same time dangerous ) but seeing how Tadano has been well received by fans maybe they will just keep her to the end.

I would love to see what Ikuko’s hand could do to the Crystal series.
