Agreed Netflix is a big player - it's been a growing trend from what I've heard of Netflix outbuidding others for streaming rights.

However just because Netflix is offering a lot of money doesn't mean Toei/PNP will roll over and let them do whatever they want - the question is how strict / consistent it is with previous releases.

What we also need to ask is who has got the home video rights ? Netflix having the Sailor Moon movie might mean a LONG wait for the home video release.

Take Violet Evergarden - its streaming premiere was April 5th 2018 on Netflix and it only reached blu-ray in the states via Funimation on December 8th 2020 and slightly earlier with Anime Limited in the UK.

You can bet your bottom dollar there is maybe a 12 - 18 month exclusivity clause in a Netflix constract for the amount of money they are paying so don't build your hopes up of seeing a blu-ray drop through your mailbox anytime soon.

I remember the Latín dub scandal where they first recorded with the original names and attacks!

The the dubbed stopped and the translator was asked not by Toei but by PNP to send a list of the attacks and terminology she was using for this new tv show and she was handed back a list of what terms to use.

She mentioned it was funny because most of them where exactly the same as the 90’s (which she translated too by the way), but she was also surprised because that hadn’t happened to her before (and she has translated a lot of tv shows for Latin America including Dragon Ball)

So, I imagine a Netflix is being supervised not only by Toei (or maybe not TOEI at all but PNP)
Yet, we still got sailor plut bullshhht
I remember then saying the og names from the old 90's dub was asked by their client who was paying for the dub

90 million are users who are registered but do not pay ... Those who pay are 3 million. Netflix users, who all pay, are 200 million. I doubt that the film would be offered for free on Crunchyroll so we would have a potential audience of 3 million versus 200 million. In addition, the important thing about the Netflix deal is the type of audience it can be reached: new fans, people who watched the series as a child and for nostalgia can reconnect with the franchise, people that can watch the series with their children now, general people that is out of the anime world, people that pay Netflix to watch La Casa de Papel. I know some friends who liked the series when they were kids but they hadn't known anything for years and they almost came to tears when they saw the trailer ... that's the audience to be attracted to the franchise, not the convinced otaku of Crunchyroll, we will always be there, no matteer what.
Yeah I share exactly the same thoughts than you about the Netflix target audiences. New fans, adults who watched as kid the serie etc... it’s just maybe a bit odd to start again by these movies because it’s already in the middle of retelling the SM story. But maybe it’s to appeal and to erase SuperS from their minds hahaha or Crystal will be available as well later (?) with some new additional corrections (hahaha we can dream).

For crunchyroll, as I said I don’t know the platform, never heard about it in Austria where I’m living right now (don’t even know if it’s available here to be honest); didn’t even know you can have a free account. So yeah you’re absolutely right: maybe they’re specialized but it’s doesn’t reach any new kind of people. They probably don’t want to do the same mistake again than they did with the Crystal exclusivity on a “otaku” platform... Crystal would have certainly been very different if it would have been first available on Netflix in 2014...

Back into the topic of the movies themselves. I wonder if they are gonna change anything in the second half to have it make more sense or if the second half is going to be as just confusing in the anime as it was in the original manga. Seriously, warping to different dimensions, plot points being introduced here there any everywhere.

What is confusing for you in the manga ? I personally found the conclusion of Dream arc one of the best that she wrote.

The one disadvantage of taking the Netflix golden shackles is home video will very likely be delayed due to exclusivity clauses....

yeah that’s true, but do they really care?
From what I heard the sales of the 3th season Blu-ray were not good... so. Maybe they think it not that’s important and that it could follow the same trends ??

But yeah it’s annoying me as well.

I think they were ( still are ) quite slow to be honest in some platforms.

In Instagram and Twitter they were crazy fast, like 24 hours to shut down the accounts that posted it ( I know 2 people on Instagram whose accounts got deleted for posting it... thanks god I didnt want to post them cause I knew something could happen :S It's so damn scary... ) but on youtube and facebook leaked footage is still there since the 8th... enough time for thousands of people to watch it.

In fact, one of the first fb pages to post it still have it available and hasnt been shut down:

Magical Girls & Cie

Its a 70.000 people public page. Toei must have seen it for sure and the videos are still there for everyone to watch.

If you write Sailor Moon Eternal on Youtube and choose this week videos you still have the leaks there for viewing.

And then when I post videos from the 90's on youtube that I edit from my own bluray rips ( not monetized ), they are deleted automatically by Youtube at the moment xD.

I think these huge companies should have hired people dedicated to do this tbh cause it can be a big issue for your economical invoice. Im sure they have people working on it but I feel japanese are still not very into social networks and lots of the times they are slow to persue these pages.

Of course its really hard to track and catch up everything once its on the internet, you just save it to your computer and no one can take it away from you but on the main social networks, this should be a fast thing to resolve from a big company as TOEI.
I wonder if they tolerate those mercury leaks, because all other leaks have disappeared quickly. i am totally unsuccessful with instagram. Digimon tri was much easier to find and catch up.

It doesn't concern me personally as I'll be buying the JP blu-rays when they come out in Japan probably early September/October ish. My point was that for people who value having physical discs that there is a price to pay in having Netflix involved that it will very likely take a while before it gets put out on Blu-ray.

There are both good and bad sides to this...look at Carole and Tuesday - part 2 got released worldwide to Netflix on Xmas eve 2019 and it's still not slated anywhere yet for blu-ray release outside of Japan that I can see ?

We’ll for sure have to wait longer to be able to buy the blu-rays :(. I never buy JP version though because Japanese in 2020 are still not able to propose English subs in their versions ...

They just announced the dvd/bluray of thr Doremi Movie released back in November for April 2021 so its been 6 months since the movie aired in cinemas.

I think you can expect the same for the movie being released in Japan in domestic format.

If we base on the time between Japanese release (cinema) and physical release, it takes 5/6 months.
Example : Dragon Ball Super: Broly was released on December 14, 2018, and physical release on June 5, 2019.

The last Doremi film was released on November 13, 2020 in theaters (Japan), a physical release is announced for April 2, 2021.

Now that Netflix has the rights for international broadcast. They are exclusive for a while. In France, Netflix exclusive titles took longer to come out (Blu-ray or DVD). So you have to expect like 6/12 months of Netflix exclusivity.

Yeah true but knowing how Toei/PNP operate I wouldn't put it past them to announce the blu-ray releases of the films at Usagi's birthday in June was it for maybe September / October release ?

They need to have SOMETHING to announce then..

For the physical release in Japan, I don't think Netflix will have an exclusivity clause. I think Toei mostly negotiated for overseas.
I'm also thinking of an announcement for June 30 and a physical release August / October 2021.

The announcement for Netflix, I do not know if it is them who will make it, or Toei. Or both simultaneously.

Oh no it won't impede the Japanese release. Not for one second.

I was referring to say a state side or UK release - that WILL be delayed for sure due to Netflix exclusivity

Not hopeful about a UK release seeing as the last Sailor Moon licensed product we had here were the DiC DVDs back in the early 2000s.
