Should They Remake the Anime Series?

Hello everyone! I'm new to the site and this is my first post. Let me just say that I'm a huge fan of Sailor Moon! My favorite seasons are the Super season and of course Stars. I'm also a huge fan of DBZ and other anime that I've grown up with.... I'm 20 now and still watch Sailor Moon and proud of it!

Anyway I've noticed that they've redone the DBZ series with that Kai edition. This is a milestone for anime as a whole because from what I know this has never been done before with a major series before. So we have all these issues with getting Sailor Moon back on the air why not just re-do it? Plus since most of the Sailor Moon fans are grown up we can now experience a more mature Sailor Moon.

Plus I believe that Naoko Takeuchi wishes were COMPLETELY undermined with the direction of the amine. So they should re-do it with her calling ALL THE SHOTS and make it pretty much like the Manga because they're are two different things almost unrecognizable when compared! Plus they had a reprint of the manga why not do a remake of the amine?

So what do you guys think?

Well, first of all, DragonBall Kai wasn't so much re-doing as re-cutting. The only new animation, if I recall, was a new intro sequence. Then the episodes were re-cut to skip some filler, etc. So I don't think you're talking about the same thing here.

I disagree that the anime "undermines" Takeuchi's wishes. She contributed to the anime with character designs (even anime-only characters) and through many song lyrics. Sure, she wasn't in directorial control, but I think "undermine" goes a bit too far. The storylines only get really different at SuperS and Sailor Stars; the Dream and Stars manga arcs are way more different than the first three are to their anime counterparts. Not to mention, the only reason the Sailor Moon manga exists is BECAUSE of the anime; Toei wanted to produce an anime version of Sailor V, but they wanted it to feature 5 main characters, so they commissioned Takeuchi to create a new manga they could base their anime on.

Also, reprinting a manga is totally not the same thing as re-making an anime series, but I understand your sentiments. All in all, I'd be up for it, especially if it could be closer to the manga, but I'd rather they don't do a complete series. A Sailor V OVA would be cool, and maybe an OVA for Stars since it was so different. Or maybe just OVAs for all five story arcs.

Also, you're incorrect in assuming that Kai is the first time an anime series has been redone. Not only is Kai just a re-cut, but shows like "Ge Ge Ge no Kitarou" are re-made, re-animated, re-written, and re-plotted every few years or so. There's a 70s version, an 80s version, a 90s version, and even a 2K version. Not trying to be grouchy, just pointing it out. =3

I do take some issue, though, with your comment about us being older now and getting to experience a more mature Sailor Moon...at the end of the day, the series is still about a 14-year-old girl who transforms into a "Pretty Soldier," so I don't know how mature you think it should be. Excessive blood and gore? Sex? Drugs? Those things aren't even heavily featured in the manga (melting Mamoru skeleton thingy aside), regardless of what some people want to believe...

Ultimately, though, I don't think there's much anyone can do about it, unless you're Takeuchi or Toei. =P

They did undermined things that she said in interviews like making the Starlights male in their human forms when all Sailor Senshi are suppose to be female. Some personality traits were changed such as Michiru compared to the Manga and other things that were left out.

The manga was made before anime, but as time when on they complimented each other in moving the story along, so it's wrong to make one more important than the other because I could watch the anime and read the manga all day and be entertained.

And I'm aware that DBZ Kai wasn't the first time a remake or a different cutting of a series. If you read what I was saying I specifically said "to my knowledge" that I know.

And you COMPLETELY misunderstood what I meant about the mature part. The manga would be considered more mature than the anime and if a new series was made closer to the storyline of the manga then I would assume it would be more mature.

Frankly... I find the anime a little bit shallow! Character development was lacking in the anime because they didn't go into depth about much of their lives. Today's anime is more focused to a mature audience and there's a distinction between what is for kids and adults.

It's just your opinion and there are many others! The post was mainly to get people opinions on whether they should remake Sailor Moon, so it was a "yes" or "no" and "why" question.

The new generation deserves a new anime that stays truer to Naoko's original story, but has enough of its own identity to stand out as its own take on the tale. Plus, PGSM could only do so much in its live-action format, whereas animation offers more freedom in design.

Most importantly, Naoko's original manga storyline has evolved over the years it was written, having introduced so many new things and ret-conned many old plot points. A new anime could be written from the ground up with these changed in place from the beginning, making the overall storyline more coherent.

I would love a new anime series that follows the manga. the manga has great potential to make a beautiful animated series, that I believe was wasted on the original show. don't get me wrong, I love the anime, but it's just so different from the manga that I have difficulty even seeing them as the same story.

I agree. My dream would be for an OVA/movie that would combine the Dark Kingdom and Dead Moon Circus storylines. They both have to do with what happened in the past, so I think it would make sense to combine them. Plus Nehellenia and Beryl together would be amazing in my opinion.

Making a new anime that more closely follows the manga wouldn't be "remaking the old anime", but would simply be "making a new anime".

DBZ Kai isn't a good example for what you're suggesting. FMA: Brotherhood better fits this description, as it wasn't a remake of the first FMA series, but an anime reboot that adhered closer to the source material than the first anime did.

As for whether or not they should, eh, maybe. Doubt it'll ever happen really soon, though.

Well, both storylines are already somewhat connected: Nehellenia threatens Serenity by proclaiming that the Moon Kingdom will eventually fall, and Beryl becomes the one who carries out the foretold destruction.

In any case, there is one thing that I'm sure everybody will want to see from a possible anime remake or OVA: Sailor V! As much as I dislike Minako in general, her time as Sailor V was a crucial part of the Sailor Moon storyline, one that the old anime treated like dirt. Poor Vee was portrayed as a lousy merchandising gimmick and Minako's actual appearence as Vee was reduced to a single throwaway episode.

One of the things that worries me if it ever gets a remake are the transformation and attacks aren't gonna be as good as the original.

I've seen some of the Pretty Cure transformations/attacks and I think there's just too much cgi special effects(specifically catered for the HD tv market).

I find traditional animation in the 90s much more superior quality than today. Wedding Peach DX also had pretty good animations.
