As brazilian youtuber Letícia Cosmos spotted in the behind the scenes clip of the NHK event, Chiaki Kon has 4 volumes of the kanzenban manga edition on her desk. It's pure speculation, but the team might already set things up for the next Crystal entry, the Stars Arc.

As the filmstill below proves, they might retell in a flashback the events of season 3 (or even all seasons). So the 2 volumes could be of the Infinity Arc, or 1 of the Infinity arc and 1 of the Stars arc, to check continuity.

In any case, I am optimistic that they will work on "Crystal Stars" and maybe they already started with pre-production. Perhaps they will announce already something on June 30 this year. After all, 2022 is already the 30 years anniversary and they might just keep on riding the wave and continue working on the reboot to finally conclude it.

Do you like the Stars arc? Do you want it to be again a series with episodes or would you prefer (a) movie(s)?

If there's really a worldwide Netflix deal, they aren't so dependant on how well the movies fare in Japanese theaters. I wouldn't be surprised if they are already working on Stars.

I think this scene will be used when Usagi recalls the time she transformed successfully, thanks to the Outers.
I completely agree, I doubt they will otherwise recap these stuff. But this is indeed part of a flashblack. Btw this shot looks great. I think we might get Stars arc sooner in comparison to Eternal films, as it is shorter and in case they are set on writer and designs, and won't have such changes done they might actually do it faster. I doubt they will be out in 2022. 2023 would be better. Or maybe later 2022 for part 1 and 2023 for part 2, in case they are films as well. I guess it depends on the success and response of Eternal. This chick Leticia Cosmos is amazing, too bad I do not speak Portuguese and French and the little bits of Spanish help very little with my understanding of her videos, but she is a dedicated fan for a while.

She's indeed a dedicated fan since the nineties, when SM hit Brazil. But she has some personality issues that made her a bit infamous within the Brazilian fandom...
Anyway, there's no denying her contribution to moonies around the world is significant. She was the first to tell the international community that dubs for Eternal were in the way even before the SAG-AFTRA leak.

those are definitely the DREAM and STARS volumes, since the infinity ones (venus and uranus/neptune covers) are thicker than the dream ones (saturn/pluto and chibiusa covers), and in that photo we can see that the saturn one is thicker than the rest of them

5,6: Infinity arc
7,8: Dream arc
9,10: Stars arc

the ones that chiaki has in her office are definitely 7,8,9,10

I mean Ikuhara or Junichi Sato would be the dream. Sato’s stuff tends to be a lot more lighter and fluffy tho so I’d probably go for Ikuhara for Stars. Realistically though? Kon is probably the best we can hope for. I think she’s doing the best with the material she has been given and she seems to be a fan of the franchise. It’d be nice to see her given a little bit more freedom in her adaptation (perhaps to fix some of the fundamental flaws of the manga) but I’m sure she has Naoko and a bunch of people breathing down her neck. Anyway, she is a damn sigh better of a director than Munehisa Sakai or whatever his name was.

Ikuhara won't respect the manga. He never does, he is much better at doing his own original stuff. I don't find these old directors to be of much valie to a faithful manga adaptation - their strengths are elsewhere. I doubt they will replace Kon, but I think they will change the style again, because it is now part of the whole Crystal thing. I personally rather have keep the current style, because another 5 years of waiting is not worth it and it looks great in animation. I just hope they keep the dark stuff, as Stars gets pretty brutal. Kon can do dark, she is actually really good at it, but she might not be allowed too.

Of course Chiaki Kon is carefully referencing the Shadow Galactica arc volumes, the 4th and 5th arcs are almost intertwined considering how many important plot points are introduced in the Dead Moon arc that are esssentially called back on or expanded on. Everything from the Sailor Crystals, Phobos and Deimos' appearance, even Nehelenia foreshadowing the Galaxy Cauldron when she appeared in the Moon Kingdom... The director should be reading the entire manga even when adapting a single arc.

That was my biggest criticism of Season 1 and 2's director and writer. I always got the sense that they didn't carefully read what happened in later arcs because a lot of the changes and cuts were overall pretty bad (like cutting out Mamoru's healing ability which made him suddenly being able to link himself with Chibiusa make less sense).

I agree on Ikuhara and Sato, they gave the anime their signature and I would love to have that feel of Classic/R and S again.

I think Kon should pass the task to someone new to keep it fresh and new. After all, that’s what’s Crystal. Each project is different. I can totally see another female director taking over. Who knows good female anime directors?

What is very important to me: a new chara design that makes the senshi look older.

What would be the best format for the Stars arc? A series? Movies?

I think they will keep the movie format. Basically they gave two tv series, albeit being three season, 1 and 2 were one season. And now a two series of movies. Stars would work better as movies than series as it is fast paced and would be kind a frustrating as series kinda like the kidnap episodes in black moon - repetitive and frustrating, in a movie it can be re-arranged and hit harder.

As far as anime goes Ikuhara is a top tier director so if he added some of his own touches in but was still faithful overall I think it would be amazing. There again as you said he’s probably at his best when he’s doing his own thing rather than doing adaptations (see: Utena) It’s his way or the highway kind of mentality.

That being said, I’m slightly worried for Stars as a movie. There are so many new characters, lore and plot points introduced that I’m not sure how they would fit it all into 2 movies without it feeling very rushed and underdeveloped. One of the problems with the original manga arc was by the final few chapters everything felt like it flew by, the writing got sloppy, things were introduced and not explained. Just a bit of a mess.
If somehow they could rectify that and make things feel a little more fleshed out then Stars would possibly be the best arc. All the ingredients are there, they just need someone who can fine tune everything. It just won’t work well as a 1:1 adaptation of the manga this time around.

As for character designer if there was ever a season that called for Sakou then Stars would be it. But hopefully Tandano will step her game up it give us something decent. When I think of Stars I think of beauty, long legs, flowing hair, a sort of ethereal, adult like feel. Hopefully she will bring her A game.

Why are you giving Utena as an example. He created Uten. In this case the manga is adapting the anime in that case.
