Did you know that the '90s anime episodes had working titles that were often radically different from the ones they ended up using? Because I didn't before today. I'll be doing my best to translate them all. Some of them are really weird, some are funny, some seem to have been the basis for the episode titles DiC used, and almost all of them are better than what they went with (at least in my humble opinion).

Oh wow I never knew this! Basically all of these are a lot easier to remember then the actual names lol. : p ^^ Some of these are really funny or clever, I wish they used them. Chocolate Parfait together especially is both sweet and tragic in the perfect way.

I guess they changed these since didn't they want the titles to fill out an entire tv guide listing or something? (which I still find weird) Still a shame they did, I think the only one's on here I prefer the final titles for are 11 and 45, just because I think they work for their episodes a little better

You are correct. They should have just added a bunch of hearts and exclamations to fill out the rest of the space instead

Cool find! How did you stumble upon this information?
I wanted to find out more about Kirin / that weird, terrible island adventure episode, and I stumbled upon a blog run by someone who was reviewing every episode of the anime and in their reviews happened to include the working title for each episode.

Episode 193's working title has me curious: did they originally plan to do it as an episode in two segments? And episode 199's working title: were they going to kill off the Starlights?

Thanks for collecting all these titles ! I think most of them are avalaible on the japanese Blu-ray booklets by the way. These booklets have some interesting informations besides titles (like... what Pluto wanted to tell to the messiah in episode 124).

By the way, the working title of episode 200 is quite similar to Saint Seiya's original TV series title for last episode: 永遠の少年伝説 (eternal legend of young men), versus SM200 which is "eternal legend of young women". I wonder if it's a reference, since both series have some common points ?

Eternal Pretty Legend sounds like it could be the name of a Sailor Stars musical.

While these:
163: DEAD MOON 1 - Mirror Labyrinth (DEAD MOON 1 -鏡の迷宮)
164: DEAD MOON 2 - Amazon Stones (DEAD MOON 2 -アマゾン・ストーン)
165: DEAD MOON 3 - Golden Crystal (DEAD MOON 3 -ゴールデン・クリスタル)
166: DEAD MOON 4 - Seal (DEAD MOON 4 -封印)
Almost sound like they could be working titles for the manga and not the anime. So funny.

And this one:
187: Activate! The Power of the Little Universe (発動!小さな宇宙の力)
Immediately made me think of Sailor Cosmos and it's the episode where Chibi Chibi first transforms. So interesting.

What did Pluto want to tell the Messiah in episode 124?
It’s by now way groundbreaking but it’s (in Japanese): « よろしくと、そう伝えください“. My English is not the best but it can be translated as “please tell him/her my regards”, something like this. These booklets have a ton of production informations, I don’t know why nobody translated them yet. They are clearly written by someone who knew about the original scenarios for each episode and the important person in the staff.

Would you be able to share scans of anything that seems interesting and maybe someone here can take a crack at translating it? I’ve always wanted to know more about the behind the scenes of the original ‘90s anime and I feel like there is a frustrating lack of info.

I own the BRD but initially I found scans of the booklets on japanese BRD torrents. I'm not sure it's allowed to talk about torrent but if you search for Moozzi2 + sailor on usual torrent sites, you can find them. He/she only scanned S/SuperS booklets unfortunatly and it's inside large sized torrents ^^

Usually they give some informations on the staff (like, it was first/last episodes of XXX), sometime who animated this attack... And mostly, it's information/description about what was in the original scenario or storyboard that didn't make it on the final episode.

I remember them talking about Cosmos in episode 200 (I need to check), or an initial idea that was Usagi getting her eternal form when Pegasus rescued her and Chibiusa in last SuperS episode.

If you can share those parts specifically that would be amazing!

It is in episode 191, that Sailor Cosmos was to appear. When Chibi Chibi discovers Princess Kakyuu's incense burner, Chibi Chibi transforms into Sailor Cosmos.
This is what is said in the booklet.
For episode 200, it is said to be the form of the light of hope. As it should be (Cosmos' appearance).

The working titles sound in many cases better than the actual ones. As someone that has translated sailor moon for fansubbing, some of them are suxh a pain to translate adequately in many languages.
