I was talking with a friend of mine and we were fooling around with Sailor names for ourselves. We have named her Sailor Anathema and we are looking for mine. I was looking up words related to destruction and ruin and such and came across the Four Horsemen refered to in the New Testiment. This has a description of the horses they ride.

A red horse, a white horse, a black horse, and a pale horse. There are four of them. There are four Shitennou. In the live action, Nephrite wore red, Zoicite wore white, and Kunzite is being associated with black in Act.Zero. Jadeite is not being associated with anything in Act.Zero as his name does not fit the pattern of Akai, Shiroi, and Kuroi. Pale does not fit the pattern either, so the outcasts seem to work since Jadeite seems very similar to his anime and manga counterpart. I think this is where the designs of the Shitennou's costumes in the live action come from.

On each side of Shumisen is a shitennou, and they together preside over the heaven called the shitennouten 四天王天, the first of the six heavens, which is the realm of desire (yokkai 欲界). In the east is *Jikokuten 持国天 , in the south *Zouchouten 増長天 in the west *Koumokuten 広目天 and in the north *Tamonten 多聞天.
I always thought the naming patterns went along with the original Japanese Shitennou. Jikokuten = Jed. Zouchoten = Zoi. Koumokuten = Kun. and Nephrite being the one left out..

hmm. I recall one of those behing-the-scenes articles saying that the costumes were designed to go along with the personalities of the actors?

Actually, I think Tamonten would fit better as Kunzite, him being the leader and most powerful of the four. He can also be associated with black, Kunzite's haircolor. Komokuten is associated with the color red, the same color Nephrite is dressed in. Their names don't necessarily have to match up with the names of the mythological characters.

The Four Horsemen idea is interesting, but I think it's mostly coincidence.

"…and behold, a pale horse. And his name that set on him was Jadeite. And Kunzite followed with him."

Eh, I like the Revelations version better. But hey, to each his own.

T3h Four Elephants--I MEAN "Horsemen" P-: --compared to the Shitennou???

Jadeite ~= Dean Malenko
Nephrite ~= Chris Benoit
Zoicite ~= Arn Anderson
Kunzite ~= Ric Flair

:P Probably not the precise comparisons, gotta give a little more thought ^_^ .

Coming soon: A comparison between the Shitennou & D-Generation X, & a comparison between the Shitennou & Evolution (pre-RKO face turn :P ).

(j/k... or am I  !!?)
