Why? At the end of the day both made changes to conform to what was politically correct at the time.
Because I'm going to opt for the less censored option.
Yes Viz has much more faithful scripts but we’re talking about Viz promoting their release as uncut for the first time not “A more faithful English dub
You were the one who brought up Viz censoring the subs and dubs. I was just pointing out it's not a fair comparison because while yes, both versions have censorship, there's a difference in the amount.
And there really wasn’t much dialog censorship in the uncut Pioneer/Optimim movies to begin with. Ami’s comment about Mamoru possibly preferring the company of men (which was a completely superfluous line and didnt impact anything like turning lesbians into cousins) is removed and a suggestive exchange between Neptune and Uranus in the SuperS movie is toned down not removed just way less straight forward.
That is the extent of the censorship in those dubs
I only mentioned the R dub having censorship, but thanks for reminding me of the SuperS line change as well.
Regardless of the line's importance, it's still censorship. And that's not the only line the R dub changed either.
Personally, I disagree about the R movie changes. Comments like those are what bring up the possibility of Fiore's jealously being romantic in nature and Mamoru being bisexual. (sentiments Viz agrees with, based on Robbie Daymond's comments at the R movie premiere panel) Perhaps I'm misremembering, but I thought the old dub made it less ambiguous by trying to make it a strictly friendship thing.
I want to add while I absolutely approve of Viz downplaying the fat shaming in episode 4 it doesn’t make it less censorship. Both DiC and Viz found the original material objectionable and sought to fix it
I feel like I'm missing something here. The definition of censorship is changing something due to finding it obscene or politically incorrect. Is that not what DiC, CWi, Pioneer and Viz did...?
