Raye had an uncle, not a sibling. It was Lita who seemed to have one or more siblings: in the SuperS movie she says her mom would make cookies for "them" after "they" had finished "their" chores/homework. No idea if they were male, female, older, younger, how many there were, anything really.

What exactly IS the Negaverse?
-
Some hell dimension? A prison for evil doers like the Phantom Zone? I’m pretty sure the words Queen Beryl broke out of her Negaverse prison was used once. Plus she was “blasted back to the Negaverse” and Sailor Moon has banished a monster to the Negaverse. Is it possible Beryl once served on Serenity’s court and tried to stage a coup and she and her sympathizers were banished to a dimension known as the Negaverse by Queen Serenity?

It may also be some sort of hell dimension for demons and people who have given into the Negaforce? (Which I always viewed as being some sort of dark god that is the essence of the Negaverse itself) monsters that Moon has vaporized were sent back to the Negaverse. Queen Beryl was clearly destroyed when she was “blasted back to the Negaverse” when Malachite died he said he would be joining Zoycite real soon. When the Scouts fell in battle and were destroyed it was referred to as being in the Negaverse. (The Doom and Gloom girl even welcomed Venus to the Negaverse when she dragged her underground)

How did the Scouts lose their memories
after defeating Beryl

No Serena wishing for a normal life here. Did the silver crystal just wipe their memories after Beryl was defeated? Perhaps as a remnant of Serenity’s will for her daughter and her friends and lover to have normal lives? (They were only meant to be awaken on the contingency that the Negaverse returned)

What was the deal with the silver crystal potentially costing Moon her life in the movies (and only the movies?)
In the dub canon the first mention that to use the silver crystal is to give up her life is the R movie and then again in the S movie. This wasn’t mentioned anywhere in the series when she used it against NegaBeryl or Doom Phantom. It could be dismissed as the movies being their own thing.

How did Molly know Darien?

In the first episode Serena doesn’t seem to know who he is referring to him as “that guy” the first time we hear his name is from Molly “Hello Darien, how are you?” (In the Japanese version Naru didn’t know who he was) and then Serena starts using his name. How did Molly know? Did he help out at her mom’s jewelry store at some point?

I assumed Serena had learned his name during some off-screen encounter where perhaps Molly was also present, so that's how she knew.

Or maybe he used to date her mom. She doesn't seem to have a dad and I can see Ms. Baker being a cougar

ETA: Come to think of it, Darien was a (former) model in the dub... Maybe he was a minor local celebrity and Molly just recognized him? Or maybe he had modeled for an ad for her mom's jewelry store at one point and that's how she knew him? Since he's friends with Andrew, maybe she'd even just met him once at the arcade (not that she seems to spend much time there)?

I got the impression that the Negaverse was essentially a hell dimension...but one that had invaded our own and sought to absorb our world and universe into part of itself. It wasn't the home to all demons, although some did ally with the Negaverse (especially GvsE Morlocks in my fan crossover ideas). The thing about the Negaverse and Negaforce is that it could only produce negative energy/magic, but needed to absorb energy in order to grow stronger.

I gather the whole idea of Queen Beryl "breaking out" was due to the fact that Queen Serenity banished Queen Beryl when she used the Crystal. By doing that she sealed up any entrance to the Negaverse and forced any living being aside from herself, Luna, and Artemis back to the other dimension (Note: I've also thought of the implication of this, that by sending all the living people to the Negaverse and the dead to Earth, if Queen Serenity unknowingly condemned the last living Moon Kingdom residents to being Negaverse captives, while also reincarnating fallen regular Negaverse servants -- not just the Shadow Warriors -- as humans.). The Negaverse was sealed away, but over 1,000 years, that seal weakened, first enough for agents to go through, then at last for Queen Beryl herself to come through.

As far as the minions, I thought they were kind of like Ganon's minions in this evil jar in the old Legend of Zelda cartoon. In the cartoon, Link would blast them with his sword and the minions were transported back into the jar for Ganon to summon again. (Given that those minions would respawn in the LoZ game after a few screens, it was a neat explanation that didn't require as much gameplay and story segregation.) At first, I thought the same was happening to the Negamonsters, except that Beryl wasn't dumb enough to keep sending the same ones over and over.

Despite this, I didn't see the generals having the same immunity to death. Whereas the minions were magical monsters that may not even have free will but were magical servants, the generals were humanoid. They lived much longer than humans and were more durable, but they were human-ish in mind and body and could be killed with sufficient force.

I presumed the girls were legitimately captured and taken back to the Negaverse base at the assault on the North Pole. Since Queen Beryl was now strong enough to manifest herself in this dimension, the Doom and Gloom's girls presence was not needed and they just guarded their captives or did other things.

That "Beryl staging a coup" was the basis for more than a few dub fanfics back in the day, with at least one having Queen Beryl as Queen Serenity's sister. Personally, I always saw Queen Beryl as some sort of demonic-alien hybrid whose people were from the Negaverse, and the only coup she staged was the one to take over the Negaverse itself and establish herself as its queen.

I definitely took it as the Crystal performing a reset on them, but not Serenity's will, at least not directly.

I take the view that the Sailor Scouts were alive when they astrally projected to help Sailor Moon, but where they actually were was somewhere in that North Pole base. Sailor Moon banished both Queen Beryl and any Negamonsters tied to her back to the Negaverse, but the girls themselves were left alone, still bound or weakened. Plus, Darien was still knocked out from the fight, so even if she could locate her fellow Scouts and free them, she wouldn't be able to teleport him with them...and they wouldn't be in a shape to Sailor Teleport anyway, after helping Sailor Moon. Seeing that Sailor Moon was in a desperate situation that she could not win and to ensure she didn't freeze to death, the Crystal reached out and transported the six of them to where each needed to be, but at the cost of their memories. This also explains why Sailor Moon has to go into her mind to recover the Silver Crystal. Its manifestation was directly tied to memory.

This was the secret power of the Crystal as it essentially acted like a save state, except much more benign. If the Sailor Scouts were facing an UnWinnable scenario (not generic danger like in MOTD fights, but "I will imminently die"), the Crystal would reach in and take them to the previous save point without the need for a mercy kill. However, the Scouts would be temporarily de-powered with no access to their memories, so they'd be vunlerable if someone did attack (the Crystal gives temporary reprieves, not "Get Out of Jail Free" cards).

The Crystal can be used to speak to Serenity, but it is not Serenity. What or who I think it is goes deep beyond headcanon and into personal fanfic territory.

I dismissed it, too. It also makes no sense given the canonical feats Neo-Queen Serenity later performed. She could awaken a world from slumber but can't stop a meteor or comet? It came across as needless drama.

I gathered that the Silver Crystal could cost Sailor Moon her life, but only if she were doing something akin what Queen Serenity did...which was first seal millions (if not billions) of people away then grab the souls of all the people who died (at least millions, if not billions ). Basically, she'd have to literally try to cheat death for multitudes and do something with the Crystal that was against natural law and order, kind of like Pluto's taboos when I think about it. But using it against enemies in magical battles would do nothing more than magnify her power and tire her out afterward if overused. There is a cost, but it's not to the point of death normally (if it were, the bad guys definitely wouldn't want it).

The way Molly says it along with the animation suggests that she not only had an interaction with him, but that she had a crush on him, or at least experienced attraction. I like MementoNepenthe's idea that he modeled for the store, probably for an ad for the same magazine that Grandpa's two-page spread was run in. It would be fitting if Peter Fisher was tapped to do the shoot, since even though his specialty was landscapes, he could take pictures of individuals and clearly had some experience doing it. I can even add more dramatic irony by having Darien pose in the photo shoot in a tuxedo (that would also give more of a justification for the mask; if he were just in a tuxedo everyone would recognize him from the local campaign). No one would find it odd that he was standing outside the jewelry store because people thought that he was just revisiting the scene.

Edit: Don't write posts in the middle of the night.

While I agree the whole “captured by the Negaverse” is the correct interpretation as far as dub intent and definitely think we were suppose to see it as the girls bond being so strong they were able to will themselves back to Princess Serena...I still favor the idea that they died, their bodies were just obliterated and their souls were trapped in the Negaverse.

I also believe Serena was the only one who didn’t die in the final battle against Beryl. Since there was no suggestion using the crystal would kill her.

And Darien was mortally wounded by Moon’s tiara rather than the shards from Beryl’s giant crystal of death.

I don’t mind the idea of Beryl as Serenity’s sister but I prefer to think she was many Queen Serenity’s trusted advisor and confidante before wanting power for herself. Probably banished to the Negaverse for trying to take over. If nothing else the line

“The crystal is mine as it was meant to be” is very telling.

Beryl being in a Scar like scenario where she was next in line in the throne until Princess Serena was born could be interesting. But, I could also see her as being the advisor who felt she should have been the one in power.

Oh Molly definitely had the crush on him going by the way she said it.

I just found it amusing that she evidently knew Darien before Serena knew him (questionable flashback in the first movie not withstanding)

Another mystery.

If we can accept the fact that Alan and Ann were associated with the Negaverse (we can)

How do we reconcile Ann not raising any eyebrows when Serena tells Darien the story of their love and the evil Queen Beryl? I would argue just because they believed they were from the Negaverse doesn’t mean they would know who Beryl is, except Alan mentions Beryl in the first episode! (That episode also put Serena in grade 9 so it may be ignored as a oddity)

Possible explanation 1- Just ignore that Alan mentioned Queen Beryl by name like you have to ignore a number of flubs from the dub. Alan and Ann don’t know her, they merely believed themselves to be from the Negaverse because the Negaforce corrupted the tree and convinced them they needed the energy for their tree to survive when really the Negaforce was just using the energy for itself.

Explanation 2- By sheer dumb luck Ann completely tuned Serena out (too busy thinking of new ways to get with Darien) when she was telling a story and just heard some girl babbling a long boring story with kid like drawings and didn’t hear the word Beryl and dismissed the drawings as stupid kiddie drawings.

What I love about the old dub is by sheer luck it provides countless more room for headcanons; two people can have a completely different explanation and both could work. I have to admit, I like the space it gives with these little details and mistakes.

I have a third, albeit not so good, explanation about Ann's non-reaction to Queen Beryl -- that the story wouldn't raise Anne's eyebrows because the mention of Queen Beryl in this context isn't something that would provoke suspicion.

The Negaverse had just had a big battle at most a few weeks ago on Earth, with Queen Beryl leading the charge. The aliens may know that she was defeated by the powerful light of the Crystal. They clearly don't even know her opponent was Sailor Moon given their introduction to her in the first episode where Alan says they never imagined there'd be somebody like her on their planet. Yet they likely do know Beryl came to Earth to conquer it (or else why would she send them there?). If a human were to tell a fairy tale of themselves of as royalty defeating the Negaverse leader, it would smell more like a self-insert fanfic where you punched a known leader in the face to save the day. At most, Ann would be surprised Beryl became part of the public consciousness.

Ann wouldn't necessarily know the whole history of Princess Serena; that was literally 1,000 years ago, likely before Alan and Ann came around.

And Ann is still supposed to be in cover, and note that she does shut down the story after the defeat of Beryl. You have to wonder how much more Serena even had in her presentation, since Serena essentially recapped what happened between "then" and "now."

This explanation is admittedly lacking, though, because while Ann smartly didn't react (which would have revealed her to be of the Negaverse)...she hasn't been shown to be that smart.

It makes more sense to make the 90's English dub be recognised more as an English Adaptation with all these changes to the original Toei storyline.

It’s recognized as an English Adaptation in the end credits.

Did Rini know Serena was her mom all along?

In the episode Naughty N Nice
“It can’t be her, kitty, Serena hates me but my real mommy loves me. It’s gotta be someone else.”

What is Zirconia?
-Nehelenia’s old butler? Her male side? Her grandfather?

What is the Cherry Hill Temple?
- Some time of martial arts dojo? A shinto temple? A secular spiritual temple that sells good luck charms and does fire readings?

Why did Sailor Mars get two attacks to start out with?
-Granted she’s just enhancing her charm she uses as a temple maiden with the power of Mars but still Mars Fire Ignite AND Mars Fireballs Charge?!?

Did Princess Serena and her court die when Beryl destroyed the Moon Kingdom?

DiC/Optimum were a bit vague. Some lines definitely suggested they died

“She’s taken them both!”

“No, not the princess!”

“The pretty twit and her Prince are gone. And the snake survives!”

But then Luna tells Queen Serenity that she saved all of them.

Re: Rini: It seemed like her quest was to find her mother, and she initially thought that was Serena, but then decided it couldn't be.

Re: Cherry Hill Temple: In S, Raye mentions that they're a bird sanctuary, which is why she can't adopt any of the kittens.

Re: Princess Serena's court: It's pretty clear that they all died. Luna doesn't tell Queen Serenity that she saved them; Queen Serenity uses the crystal to seal away the Negaverse and then Luna says, "Majesty, you did it! They're gone!"

I do have another question about Serena's court. In "The Past Returns" Queen Serenity says, "Serena and her court will need you if the Negaverse breaks free." In "A Reluctant Princess," Luna tells the Inners that they were "part of Serena's court." That "part of" bit makes it sound like there were other members of her court. So the question remains: who else was part of Serena's court and reborn on Earth? And do any of them also have powers?

Speaking of Chibiusa granted it has been a while since I have seen R in the original version itself is it clear whether or not Chibiusa knows that Usagi is her Mom or not or is it like in the dub where she at first thinks that Usagi is not her Mom because she is not as mature as say future adult Usagi?

Re: Rini: It seemed like her quest was to find her mother, and she initially thought that was Serena, but then decided it couldn't be.
Makes sense. It would be weird for Rini to be openly hostile to her mother from the word go. She might have thought it might be after staying with her for a while and then dismissed it.

Re: Cherry Hill Temple: In S, Raye mentions that they're a bird sanctuary, which is why she can't adopt any of the kittens.
I wasn’t sure that was meant to be taken literally. I just thought Raye was referring to the temple as a bird sanctuary as in a lot of birds were there not that it was the temple’s primary function

Re: Princess Serena's court: It's pretty clear that they all died. Luna doesn't tell Queen Serenity that she saved them; Queen Serenity uses the crystal to seal away the Negaverse and then Luna says, "Majesty, you did it! They're gone!"
I went back and checked the episode

Queen Serenity:I trapped them all in the crystal, yes. If I had destroyed them I would have destroyed Serena and the others too. Now they’re all inside the power of the crystal. Now I must send them to a new future on earth

Luna: But, you saved them, why are you so sad?

That exchange makes it sound like Serenity saved them from near death while the earlier dialog made it sound like they were killed.

I was under the impression everyone on the Moon Kingdom sans Queen Serenity were sent to be reincarnated on earth. They probably weren’t important enough since they weren’t part of the royal family or the elite guard/the Scouts.

New headcanon Mrs.Tsukino is the reincarnation of the Queen’s favorite hand maiden and Mr.Tsukino is the reincarnation of a Moon Kingdom butler that played with the princess as a child.

I don't think Cherry Hill Temple is primarily a bird sanctuary, just that that's another of its functions besides charm shop, martial arts center, and place for fire readings.

I think Luna's just saying Queen Serenity saved their bodies/souls for rebirth on Earth so that they wouldn't be lost forever, but they still definitely died.

Everyone on the moon was reincarnated, but not all of them were necessarily part of Serena's court, to whom Queen Serenity gives special mention.

And, come to think of it, since the dub added the whole "you were all princesses of your respective planets" thing, they introduced the same question that the manga leaves unanswered: what happened to all the people living on those planets? Was the entire Solar System's populace reborn on Earth? Is that why there's an overpopulation crisis?

From a corporate perspective, the reason to produce a children's cartoon is to sell toys/merchandise.

From a child's perspective, the reason to buy said toys/merchandise is to act out the cartoon you like.

I don't know what kind of working relationship DiC had with Bandai America / Irwin. I don't know how involved they were in the toys/merch being produced for the North American market. This video indicates they had some involvement, but to what extent is unclear.

Bearing this in mind...

What's the deal with the Moon Cycle?

I know not every Sailor Moon toy has to directly tie-in with or appear in the series (those mini castle playsets spring to mind), but even so, the Moon Cycle feels really strange to me. It's so....specific? It has such a unique, detailed design to it, and while it certainly fits with the general aesthetics of the series, it certainly doesn't fit in with the substance of the series. So what gives? Why would North America make up such a specific item that has nothing to do with the actual show? Was there a trend at the time of major toylines' (Power Rangers, TMNT, Barbie?) having motorcycles (or cycle-like vehicles) that Bandai/Irwin was just cashing in on? Was there maybe a plan for a Sailor Moon racing game that would have featured the Moon Cycle that just never came to fruition? I just don't get it.

Anyway, if we treat the merchandise as part of the dub canon, where would the Moon Cycle even fit in? I don't see how Sailor Moon would have acquired it. I don't see Luna or Artemis giving it to her, and I don't see it being the result of the Scouts' combining their powers. When would she have even gotten it? After SuperS? During some "lost episode" within Classic thru SuperS? The only concept I can imagine is there being a lost episode of S where Uranus challenges Sailor Moon to a drag race. I don't know. Maybe it relates to this image from the second art book.

And speaking of fitting the merchandise into the dub canon... I'd love to know by what scenario Queen Beryl and the Scouts got together and agreed to share a Dream House together.

That's a really good question. While it's possible that it was just a trendy toy, as you mentioned, the Moon Cycle is too well-designed to be something that would be a cheap cash grab (unlike that Dream House). It also is weird from a marketing perspective, as while Barbie did have a motorcycle, most motorcycle toys are usually marketed to boys but the Sailor Moon toys had a very clear girl target audience.

Two possibilities come to mind.
  1. It was a product directed towards an American child audience based on the licensed episodes. As a toy reverse-engineered from the distillation of Sailor Moon, this would be a toy based on what a little girl would presumably want concerning a Sailor Moon product. Since the makers didn't care about the show and wouldn't even see the show, this would be a wish-fulfillment based on the idea of Sailor Moon.
  2. The toy was designed to be sold and there were plans for a Moon Cycle to appear within the original show (or one of the movies) to justify it, but the plans were scuttled before it could be implemented, leading to the toy being released.
As for a plot-based reason, maybe it would come to her in a dream, literally. Around the time of this toy would be the SuperS season, and instead of having the bad guys look into the dream mirrors, Sailor Moon would ride into them and see the dreams. The only downside is that Sailor Moon's design had changed since then to remove a lot of the crescent motifs for heart motifs.

I know Bandai made toy exclusive stuff for Power Rangers all the time. .

Power Rangers also frequently used motorcycles that were sold as toys and since Sailor Moon was probably seen as “Power Rangers for girls” that was probably the logic.

I’m also under the impression the Moon Cycles were at least partially inspired from the Moon Sails from Toonmaker Moon. Perhaps early concept art for those toys were made before DiC acquired the license and decided to just dub the series so Bandai didn’t want the money spent on early concept art for the Moon Sails to go to waste and refitted them to be Moon Cycles?

Raye: Beryl managed to escape the Negaverse again and she got wicked cool dream house but she said rent is so mondo expensive she wants us to move in her with to share rent

Serena: wow cosmic! Okaaay as long as that sleaze meister Beryl doesn’t try anything bad I am so in

Lita: If that negatoad tries anything we’ll blast her back to the Negaverse
