What exactly IS the Negaverse?
-Some hell dimension? A prison for evil doers like the Phantom Zone? I’m pretty sure the words Queen Beryl broke out of her Negaverse prison was used once. Plus she was “blasted back to the Negaverse” and Sailor Moon has banished a monster to the Negaverse. Is it possible Beryl once served on Serenity’s court and tried to stage a coup and she and her sympathizers were banished to a dimension known as the Negaverse by Queen Serenity?
It may also be some sort of hell dimension for demons and people who have given into the Negaforce? (Which I always viewed as being some sort of dark god that is the essence of the Negaverse itself) monsters that Moon has vaporized were sent back to the Negaverse. Queen Beryl was clearly destroyed when she was “blasted back to the Negaverse” when Malachite died he said he would be joining Zoycite real soon. When the Scouts fell in battle and were destroyed it was referred to as being in the Negaverse. (The Doom and Gloom girl even welcomed Venus to the Negaverse when she dragged her underground)
I got the impression that the Negaverse was essentially a hell dimension...but one that had invaded our own and sought to absorb our world and universe into part of itself. It wasn't the home to all demons, although some did ally with the Negaverse (especially GvsE Morlocks in my fan crossover ideas). The thing about the Negaverse and Negaforce is that it could only produce negative energy/magic, but needed to absorb energy in order to grow stronger.
I gather the whole idea of Queen Beryl "breaking out" was due to the fact that Queen Serenity banished Queen Beryl when she used the Crystal. By doing that she sealed up any entrance to the Negaverse and forced any living being aside from herself, Luna, and Artemis back to the other dimension (Note: I've also thought of the implication of this, that by sending all the living people to the Negaverse and the dead to Earth, if Queen Serenity unknowingly condemned the last living Moon Kingdom residents to being Negaverse captives, while also reincarnating fallen regular Negaverse servants -- not just the Shadow Warriors -- as humans.). The Negaverse was sealed away, but over 1,000 years, that seal weakened, first enough for agents to go through, then at last for Queen Beryl herself to come through.
As far as the minions, I thought they were kind of like Ganon's minions in this evil jar in the old Legend of Zelda cartoon. In the cartoon, Link would blast them with his sword and the minions were transported back into the jar for Ganon to summon again. (Given that those minions would respawn in the LoZ game after a few screens, it was a neat explanation that didn't require as much gameplay and story segregation.) At first, I thought the same was happening to the Negamonsters, except that Beryl wasn't dumb enough to keep sending the same ones over and over.
Despite this, I didn't see the generals having the same immunity to death. Whereas the minions were magical monsters that may not even have free will but were magical servants, the generals were humanoid. They lived much longer than humans and were more durable, but they were human-ish in mind and body and could be killed with sufficient force.
I presumed the girls were legitimately captured and taken back to the Negaverse base at the assault on the North Pole. Since Queen Beryl was now strong enough to manifest herself in this dimension, the Doom and Gloom's girls presence was not needed and they just guarded their captives or did other things.
That "Beryl staging a coup" was the basis for more than a few dub fanfics back in the day, with at least one having Queen Beryl as Queen Serenity's
sister. Personally, I always saw Queen Beryl as some sort of demonic-alien hybrid whose people were from the Negaverse, and the only coup she staged was the one to take over the Negaverse itself and establish herself as its queen.
How did the Scouts lose their memories
after defeating Beryl
No Serena wishing for a normal life here. Did the silver crystal just wipe their memories after Beryl was defeated? Perhaps as a remnant of Serenity’s will for her daughter and her friends and lover to have normal lives? (They were only meant to be awaken on the contingency that the Negaverse returned)
I definitely took it as the Crystal performing a reset on them, but not Serenity's will, at least not directly.
I take the view that the Sailor Scouts were alive when they astrally projected to help Sailor Moon, but where they actually were was somewhere in that North Pole base. Sailor Moon banished both Queen Beryl and any Negamonsters tied to her back to the Negaverse, but the girls themselves were left alone, still bound or weakened. Plus, Darien was still knocked out from the fight, so even if she could locate her fellow Scouts and free them, she wouldn't be able to teleport him with them...and they wouldn't be in a shape to Sailor Teleport anyway, after helping Sailor Moon. Seeing that Sailor Moon was in a desperate situation that she could not win and to ensure she didn't freeze to death, the Crystal reached out and transported the six of them to where each needed to be, but at the cost of their memories. This also explains why Sailor Moon has to go into her mind to recover the Silver Crystal. Its manifestation was directly tied to memory.
This was the secret power of the Crystal as it essentially acted like a save state, except much more benign. If the Sailor Scouts were facing an UnWinnable scenario (not generic danger like in MOTD fights, but "I will imminently die"), the Crystal would reach in and take them to the previous save point without the need for a mercy kill. However, the Scouts would be temporarily de-powered with no access to their memories, so they'd be vunlerable if someone did attack (the Crystal gives temporary reprieves, not "Get Out of Jail Free" cards).
The Crystal can be used to speak to Serenity, but it is not Serenity. What or who I think it is goes deep beyond headcanon and into personal fanfic territory.
What was the deal with the silver crystal potentially costing Moon her life in the movies (and only the movies?)
In the dub canon the first mention that to use the silver crystal is to give up her life is the R movie and then again in the S movie. This wasn’t mentioned anywhere in the series when she used it against NegaBeryl or Doom Phantom. It could be dismissed as the movies being their own thing.
I dismissed it, too. It also makes no sense given the canonical feats Neo-Queen Serenity later performed. She could awaken a world from slumber but can't stop a meteor or comet? It came across as needless drama.
I gathered that the Silver Crystal could cost Sailor Moon her life, but only if she were doing something akin what Queen Serenity did...which was first seal millions (if not billions) of people away then grab the souls of all the people who died (at least millions, if not billions ). Basically, she'd have to literally try to cheat death for multitudes and do something with the Crystal that was against natural law and order, kind of like Pluto's taboos when I think about it. But using it against enemies in magical battles would do nothing more than magnify her power and tire her out afterward if overused. There is a cost, but it's not to the point of death normally (if it were, the bad guys definitely wouldn't want it).
How did Molly know Darien?
In the first episode Serena doesn’t seem to know who he is referring to him as “that guy” the first time we hear his name is from Molly “Hello Darien, how are you?” (In the Japanese version Naru didn’t know who he was) and then Serena starts using his name. How did Molly know? Did he help out at her mom’s jewelry store at some point?
The way Molly says it along with the animation suggests that she not only had an interaction with him, but that she had a crush on him, or at least experienced attraction. I like MementoNepenthe's idea that he modeled for the store, probably for an ad for the same magazine that Grandpa's two-page spread was run in. It would be fitting if Peter Fisher was tapped to do the shoot, since even though his specialty was landscapes, he could take pictures of individuals and clearly had some experience doing it. I can even add more dramatic irony by having Darien pose in the photo shoot in a tuxedo (that would also give more of a justification for the mask; if he were just in a tuxedo everyone would recognize him from the local campaign). No one would find it odd that he was standing outside the jewelry store because people thought that he was just revisiting the scene.
