I actually really like Emilie's version of Mina. It wasn't as distinctive as Stephanie or Cherami, but I think she nailed the ditzy personality the best. She made the character sound the most sweet and innocent too, but still powerful as Sailor Venus. She would've been terrific under better direction. Stephanie sounded a bit too old and mature, and Cherami too young, but none were bad...

I did too. She was my favorite.

. She would've been terrific under better direction
I would apply that to most of the Optimum cast, especially under Nicole Thault :P

. Stephanie sounded a bit too old and mature,[/quote[

Stephanie worked for that point in the show especially since DiC downplayed most of Minako's goofier aspects and player her up more as the everygirl/big sister of the group

My big problem with Cherami is again it's just that same LITERALLY every dub anime school girl ever voice the Viz dub over uses. I get it. Minako is a school girl but there should still be distinction in the voice acting. Still not as bad as Higgins.

Actually, based on some clips I watched Cherami Leigh seems to do a better job with Crystal than she did with the original series

Most of the cast does better in Crystal. They seemed to be cast with that in mind. Kate's Ami has grown on me. Her actual voice isn't distinctive, but her performance is sweet, subdued, and innocent enough. It works. She's not quite as good as Karen Bernstein, but she's far, far, far better than Liza Balkan (not saying much).

I think you're right. Cristina Vee especially seemed clearly cast with the more mature sophisticated manga/crystal Rei in mind not the fiery hot tempered not-so-different-from-Usagi Rei of the 90s anime.

Her performance isn't horrible it's just way too generic. When you think Ami you think smart, sweet, and polite. I don't get an of that out of Higgin's Ami. And while DiC/Optimum kind of made Amy a low-key b-word (I have no clue why everyone picks on Raye when Amy was clearly the one that got the bee word upgrade) Bernstein still made Amy sound intelligent and a bit insecure.

She's not quite as good as Karen Bernstein, but she's far, far, far better than Liza Balkan (not saying much).
I agree with this. I'm sure Balkan is a nice lady and maybe a good actress but she was a horrid voice actress. She did theatre before and after Sailor Moon and that's probably her comfort house. Apparently she only got the role because Bernstein knew her and recommended her as a sound a like. Although again it's not entirely Balkan's fault. You had someone with absolutely no voice acting experience being directed by someone who had no business voice directing.

So both Serena and Amy got screwed by the CWi dub because they wanted sound-alikes. Their voice director was a French man who didn't speak English, right?

Yes Optimum wanted sound alikes for "vocal consistency" I guess. Linda Ballatyne even basically confirmed she was instructed to imitate Terri Hawkes.

A french woman but yes. Also apparently a very cheap french woman as Roland Parliament made note that when Tracey Moore was doing multiple takes during her tenure as voice director for the first 10 episodes Thault would physically squirm in her seat.

Oh, Nicole did more than just supervising?
I wonder if she had any connection with the French dub, it was also full of crap.

Yes. She was a line producer since day one but took over voice directing duties for S and SuperS

Wouldn't surprise me.

Speaking of the french dub can we talk just about how bad the opening is?

Not the song itself, I kind of dig that but just the whole editing of scenes together is just so awful , Whatever you feel about the English opening the did a good job editing various episodes, and stuff from the first Classic and R opening together to form a cohesive opening. This is just a giant mess of a music video.

Isn't the French dub where Amara's "Moon Faced Girl" nickname for Serena came from?
The English S and Ss dubs took some inspiration from the latin-american dub. The inners shouting their soldier names before their Super attacks originated from the SuperS LatAm spanish dub that happened like three years before the American one and was also produced by CWi.

I just read that Nicole fired the original voice director because he promoted Sailor Moon at cons with the voice cast. Why the hell would she do that?

I assume you mean Roland Parliament, who was technically the second voice director (Tracey Moore was the first) but did most of the original 65.

No clue. Everything I've heard about her was awful. It seems like she's a big reason why the original English dub overall had so many problems from a production stand point.

I actually liked that change. It was weird that Moon was the only one to have her attacks start with her celestial body and the others...didn't. Wish the English dub was consistent about that

With regard to the Moon Face girl thing according to wikimoon

Frédérique called Bunny "Face de Lune" (Moon Face)
Also apparently like the English dub the French dubbers were unable to license Stars so it ended at SuperS and the French dub also did the weird Zirconia as male thing

But her work somehow managed to be a reference. The Pokémon cast told Roland they were instructed to watch all SM dubbed episodes so they could understand how dubbing was supposed to be done.

Which Pokemon cast the first one under 4Kids or the one that took over when Pokemon Company International obtained the license in the mid-2000s?

If was the first one the show started being dubbing in 1998 so if they were made to watch Sailor Moon as a reference they would have only seen the episodes that Nicole Thault DIDN'T direct as S and SuperS werent dubbed yet.

4kids. Well, she was still the producer behind it.
