So I'm rewatching sailor moon with new boyfriend. And my boyfriend pointed out how poorly Usagi treats Umino. Instances include her punching him in episode 12 and in episode 15 she used him to go on a date. The poor guy likes Usagi but yet she treats him like crap. And the She's only shown concern for him a few times. Anyone else not a fan of the Umino bashing?

Edit also episode 26 Usagi punches Umino.

I'm not Usagi always was Shallow and funnily enough she actually admits to being massively shallow in one episode (the episode where they all scrambled to make the best wedding dress to win a free wedding ceremony)

In fairness to Usagi, she was a teenager and she hadn't matured at that point in the series and Umino treated her poorly too with how he kept harassing her after she kept turning him down (episode two, anyone?). But I think Usagi did come to truly care about Umino as a friend and she even tried to help him and Naru with their relationship by setting them up with the love contest in the S season.

I'm not a fan of the bashing of course, but he could be very annoying.

He had his moments though. :)

Umino treated Usagi just fine matter of fact there's nothing he wouldn't have done for her until later on when he dated Naru, had Umino been a dashing guy Usagi would've been skirt chasing after him (for a series that's supposed to be about Female Empowerment there's a ton of Shallowness and guy chasing)

Quite frankly, he deserves it.

He was comic relief, so the physical abuse was allowed to happen to him if the creators thought it would make the audience laugh. I mean, Makoto once choked Mamoru in a moment of attempted physical humor, Minako has done physical harm to Artemis that was meant to be funny, and even Naru punched Umino once in episode 8 for his sneaky sudden appearance that resulted in her over-the-top comedic reaction.

However, this isn't to say that all of the above was justified and acceptable. Rather, it merely explains what the intent behind each of these seemingly cruel actions was.

And it's not like Umino remained the butt of most physical jokes forever. As the season progressed and the character got emotionally closer to Naru, the physical comedy surrounding him became less cruel and more silly, with his reactions to said physical abuse switching from being painful and despaired to more just confused or quirky.

I kind of liken Umino's depiction in the 90's anime to how Bulk and Skull were portrayed in the pre-Turbo seasons of Power Rangers, with each of them starting off as comic relief foil characters on the receiving end of much physical abuse but who in turn become more likable over time as more sides of their personalities are uncovered, and ultimately become on much better terms with the protagonists of each show.

I don't know. I think I'd be weirded out if someone made a fortune telling game out of me that said we were going to get married without asking me if that was ok first though I'd probably go tell a teacher instead of beating Umino up. There was also that time Umino stalked his teacher and took photos of her without her permission.

supposedly Umino is quite handsome with out his galsses.
admittedly he is dorky at times but he does try to protect Usagi from a youma and eventually catches Naru on the rebound from Nephrite.
He is the master of combat spicy shrimp.

Is it really that bad? It's no worth than how Mamoru treats Usagi in the first season, or how everyone picks on Artemis throughout the series.

It actually is... Mamoru never physically hits Usagi, even though she (albeit accidentally) hits him. He never tricks her. All he really does is call her bun head and call out her bad habits. (I wonder if a values difference between cultures is making him seem worse. Since we're so individualist it's considered cruel to criticize someone's grades or eating habits, while in Japan he might be considered rude but maybe they'd also think his intentions were good?) I should also mention that even though she hit him with her shoe twice, he still wanted to give her good advice about Naru and Nephrite.

Writing this made me think about how Usagi usually doesn't go looking for trouble either. She usually just gets defensive when he suddenly springs up..

In the nineties, we knew better than to let extroverted nerds speak their minds! :-P I saw the novelization of episode 5 changed the ending of the "alligator (purse)" story so that instead of just growling and raising fists, Serena and Molly dumped their lunches on Melvin's head, as if that was a normal plan they'd have for dealing with him. Then Serena complained about having no lunch in the next scene. :googly:

Yeah but... Mamoru was a college student basically bullying a middle school girl. Yeah, you can call it "teasing", but he would just show up randomly and tell her she's stupid/fat/unlady like. He even makes her cry in one episode because he's such a jerk.

Also, Umino is kind of a creep and even ends up stalking Ms. Haruna at one point...

Nothing he said that made her cry was directed at her, though. He was talking about some other guy (Motoki) that supposedly liked Usagi's poor eating habits (or so Usagi thought), and Usagi started crying because, to her, he was badmouthing Motoki, when neither Mamoru nor Usagi really understood what Motoki said earlier (thankfully Luna did understand) that this misunderstanding, combined with Usagi's tendency to get overly defensive towards anything Mamoru would say during this point in the show, led to her to start crying.

Agreed. Off the top of my head, Mamoru calls Makoto a giant (who he knows is Usagi's friend) in front of Usagi, basically tells Usagi she's not beautiful on the inside or outside (Model episode), says she'll never get a boyfriend, says that she likes Motoki because Motoki is a loser while implying that Usagi is a loser as well...
It'd still be sh*tty but more understandable if Mamoru was the same age as Usagi (and hence at the same maturity level), but the dude is in college :p
His behavior has nothing to do with cultural differences - it's just as inappropriate in Japan as the States or wherever

that's very true but we both know that was teasing besides just about anyone would get peeved if they kept repeatedly getting hit in the head with stuff (Usagi's Shoe, her homework, Etc.), but half of what he told her was actually good advice

Of course we both know that Mamoru was teasing Usagi. That doesn't excuse him from picking on a 14 year old girl who doesn't know that he's just teasing her. I love Mamoru, but in the first season he's meant to be that dumb trope where the guy is mean/puts down the girl he likes - I've watched enough Asian dramas to know that the trope is common. What makes it particularly worse in Mamoru's case is that he's a college student and Usagi is in middle school lol.

Also on the main topic of Usagi mistreating Umino. I noticed that too. I think the show intentionally has Usagi start of as shallow and self-centered to show her character growth as the show progresses.

Usagi can be kind of a**holish especially in the first season, but so many people gloss over this.

To be fair, the college thing wasn't made clear until episode 15, whereas the manga had established him as a high school student as early as Act. 3. So for the first 14 episodes of the anime, Mamoru's age/grade was completely ambiguous and, for all everyone knew, he could have been viewed as being a high schooler like in the manga prior to his college reveal.
